Choose a small-form-factor (SFF) desktop when you need room for an internal graphics card, additional drives, or expansion cards. That rule is only a starting point: mini PCs and SFF desktops vary dramatically by model, so the exact CPU, graphics solution, memory layout, storage bays, slots, cooling, and power supply determine whether a system suits your work.
The practical way to decide is to define your workload and upgrade plans first, then verify the specifications of the exact configuration you can buy. The ASUS ExpertCenter PN64 and ROG NUC, and Lenovo ThinkCentre M90s Gen 6, illustrate why category labels alone are not enough.

The short answer
| If your priority is… | Start by investigating… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Taking up as little desk or shelf space as possible | A mini PC | It is generally the better initial candidate for a very small footprint and flexible placement. |
| Adding an internal graphics card later | An SFF desktop | The enclosure and motherboard may provide PCIe expansion, graphics support, and a power supply designed for add-in hardware. |
| Adding several internal drives or a network card | An SFF desktop | Some SFF families explicitly provide drive bays and expansion-card options. |
| Simple office, web, and media use in a constrained workspace | A mini PC, provided its ports and performance fit | Compact placement can simplify a crowded desk, but you still need to check displays, USB, networking, and storage. |
| Gaming or demanding creative software | The exact configuration, not a category | Graphics hardware, sustained cooling, memory channels, and power limits matter more than the words “mini” or “SFF.” |
There is no evidence of a universal price, performance, noise, or reliability winner. A fair comparison must match memory, SSD capacity, operating system, warranty, and peripherals, and then compare the exact CPUs and GPUs under the workload you actually run.

Integrated graphics examples
ASUS lists integrated Intel graphics in the specifications for its ExpertCenter PN64. That type of configuration can be suitable for office applications, browser work, video playback, and other tasks that do not require a discrete graphics card, but the result depends on the selected processor, memory, cooling, and software.
The PN64 specification also ties graphics behavior to memory configuration. ASUS says Iris Xe graphics requires 128-bit dual-channel memory for optimal performance. If you are considering this model or a similar integrated-graphics mini PC, verify that the installed or upgradeable memory can run in the required channel configuration instead of assuming that any amount of RAM will deliver the same graphics performance.
Higher-performance mini PCs are different designs
The ASUS ROG NUC demonstrates how far a mini PC can differ from an office-oriented model. ASUS lists an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H option and states a system-validation limit of up to 64 GB of RAM because of thermal limitations. That is a configuration-specific limit, not a rule for all mini PCs. A compact gaming-oriented system can therefore be much more capable than a basic mini PC, while still imposing tighter thermal or memory constraints than a larger desktop.

What “small-form-factor desktop” means in practice
An SFF desktop uses a compact case, but it normally reserves more internal volume than a mini PC for serviceable components. The term still covers multiple chassis layouts and motherboard designs, so dimensions and expansion options vary.
Internal expansion can be the deciding advantage
Lenovo describes its ThinkCentre M90s Gen 6 SFF desktop as supporting optional graphics and the addition of storage, graphics, and network cards. That makes this particular SFF family worth investigating when you expect to install hardware inside the case rather than relying entirely on external devices.

Those capabilities do not guarantee that every M90s Gen 6 configuration has the same slots, bays, power supply, or graphics compatibility. Before selecting a SKU, check the chassis dimensions, drive-bay layout, available PCIe slots, card length and height limits, power connectors, supported graphics options, and regional availability.
Compact does not mean universally expandable
An SFF case can still use proprietary mounting points, a low-profile card requirement, or a power supply that limits upgrades. Confirm the service documentation for the exact machine. If a future graphics card or additional drive is central to your plan, treat the slot, clearance, and power details as purchase requirements rather than optional conveniences.
Compare the two types against your real constraints
| Decision factor | Mini PC starting point | SFF desktop starting point | Verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical placement | Usually the better first candidate when the smallest possible computer is the main constraint. | Still compact, but the exact chassis and clearance around it must be measured. | Dimensions, orientation, mounting support, external power brick, ventilation, and cable access. |
| Graphics and heavy workloads | Ranges from integrated graphics to high-end compact configurations. | Some models offer optional graphics and internal expansion. | Exact CPU and GPU, sustained cooling limits, workload-specific benchmarks, and power-supply capacity. |
| Future upgrades | Some models expose memory or storage, while others have limited service access. | The cited Lenovo family advertises several internal card and drive expansion categories. | RAM type and slots, M.2 and SATA bays, PCIe slots, GPU dimensions, and power connectors. |
| Memory-dependent graphics | On the ASUS PN64, Iris Xe performance depends on 128-bit dual-channel memory. | Results depend on the selected processor, memory arrangement, and any installed graphics card. | Supported modules, channel configuration, and whether the chosen capacity uses the available slots correctly. |
| Setup simplicity | Small placement can reduce desk clutter, but port selection varies. | Internal flexibility can add options, while the larger enclosure needs more room. | Monitor outputs, USB ports, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, audio, peripherals, mounting, and access to the power button. |
Match the computer to the workload
Office, web, and communication
For documents, spreadsheets, browser tabs, email, and video meetings, start with the mini PC if space and quiet, simple placement matter most. Confirm that it has enough memory for your multitasking pattern, the display outputs you need, and the USB ports required by your keyboard, storage, camera, and other accessories.
An SFF desktop becomes more attractive if you need several internal drives, a particular wired-network adapter, or the ability to replace components later without depending on external enclosures. The extra internal capacity is useful only if the selected chassis actually provides the bays and slots.
Development and technical software
Development workloads differ widely. A compact mini PC can be a sensible choice for coding, local services, and test environments when the processor, memory capacity, storage speed, and operating-system support meet your projects. If you expect many virtual machines, large local databases, or several high-speed storage devices, inspect memory limits and storage expansion before choosing the smallest enclosure.
An SFF system gives you more potential paths for adding drives or a network card. That flexibility can matter more than the initial size, particularly when your tools or datasets are expected to grow.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
Photo, video, 3D, and other creative work
Creative applications can stress the processor, graphics engine, memory, storage, and cooling at the same time. Do not choose by processor name alone. Check independent results for the exact CPU and GPU configuration in the software and export settings you use, and consider sustained performance rather than a short burst of speed.
A mini PC may be appropriate when its graphics capability and thermal behavior match your projects. A larger SFF desktop is the safer starting point when you need a discrete graphics card, multiple internal scratch or media drives, or a future upgrade path. The decision depends on the application and resolution, not on the enclosure label.
Gaming
Ask which games, resolution, quality settings, frame-rate target, and display technology you intend to use. Integrated graphics in a compact office mini PC and a dedicated GPU in a gaming-oriented compact system are fundamentally different choices.
The ASUS PN64 and ROG NUC show that “mini PC” does not describe one gaming capability. The PN64 specification lists integrated Intel graphics, while the ROG NUC offers an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H option and has a stated validated memory limit of 64 GB because of thermal considerations. Neither example establishes performance for every game or configuration. Compare the actual graphics hardware and published or independently measured results for your target titles.
An SFF desktop may provide more graphics choices, but confirm that the card is physically compatible and that the power supply has the required capacity and connectors. A card that fits the slot but exceeds the chassis clearance or power budget is not a workable upgrade.
Which is easier to upgrade?
There is no category-wide answer. Upgradeability is a model-by-model question.

Mini PC memory and storage
Some mini PCs let you replace SO-DIMM memory or add an M.2 drive; others use fewer accessible components. Intel’s NUC guidance recommends checking the system’s memory specifications and identifies SO-DIMM as the small-outline memory form factor. Use the service guide and specification for the precise model to confirm the number of slots, supported capacity, speed, voltage, and installation procedure.
For storage, check whether the system has an open M.2 slot, a populated slot that must be replaced, a 2.5-inch bay, or no user-accessible expansion. Confirm the supported M.2 length and interface before ordering a drive. A physically similar module can still be incompatible if the keying, protocol, or clearance differs.
SFF desktop expansion
The Lenovo ThinkCentre M90s Gen 6 description explicitly includes adding storage, graphics, and network cards, which is the kind of flexibility many buyers seek from an SFF desktop. Verify the exact motherboard and chassis documentation for the number and type of slots, drive connectors, low-profile requirements, card clearance, and power connections.
Plan the upgrade as a complete system. A graphics card may require a stronger power supply, additional airflow, a different bracket, or removal of a drive cage. An extra drive may consume a SATA port or mounting position needed by another component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Space, mounting, cooling, and everyday setup
Measure the complete installation
Measure the computer’s footprint and height, then leave room for ventilation, connectors, and access to the power button. A mini PC can be mounted behind a monitor or placed on a shelf, but only if the model supports the mount and the cables can bend without strain. An external power brick also occupies space and needs airflow.
For an SFF desktop, measure the case in its intended orientation and account for the space needed to open the panel. Include clearance for display cables, USB devices, Ethernet, and the power cord. A system that technically fits a cabinet may still be impractical if you cannot reach its ports or remove the side panel.

Consider sustained heat, not just peak specifications
Small enclosures have less room for heatsinks and airflow paths. The ROG NUC’s stated 64 GB validation limit due to thermal limitations is a reminder that compact systems can impose design-specific boundaries. For any demanding workload, seek results that reflect sustained operation and verify the manufacturer’s supported limits rather than assuming a desktop-class component performs identically in every chassis.
Check every connection before committing
- Count the monitors and identify their required connectors and resolutions.
- List USB devices that must remain connected at the same time.
- Decide whether you need wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, or a card reader.
- Check whether the computer supports your mounting method and orientation.
- Confirm that external storage, docks, or adapters will not consume the only ports you need for daily use.
A step-by-step buying method
- Write down the actual workload. Separate office work, web and media playback, development, creative applications, and gaming. For games and creative software, record the applications, projects, resolution, quality settings, and performance target.
- Set a physical limit. Measure the available width, depth, height, ventilation space, and cable clearance. Decide whether a monitor mount, shelf, or under-desk placement is required.
- List non-negotiable connections. Record monitor outputs, USB quantity, networking, audio, storage interfaces, and any peripherals that must connect directly.
- Decide whether internal expansion is mandatory. If you must install a graphics card, extra drives, or a network card, investigate SFF models first and confirm the exact slots, clearance, and power supply. If not, a mini PC may better satisfy a space-first requirement.
- Verify memory and storage serviceability. For a mini PC, use the model’s service guide and specification to confirm replaceable RAM, SO-DIMM compatibility, slot count, maximum capacity, and M.2 or SATA options. For an SFF desktop, inspect the drive bays, connectors, and expansion-card layout.
- Match graphics to the workload. Identify the exact integrated or discrete GPU. Do not infer gaming or creative performance from the CPU name or from another product in the same family.
- Check sustained limits and power. Review cooling restrictions, validated memory limits, power-adapter or PSU capacity, graphics-card connectors, and airflow requirements.
- Calculate the complete system cost. Match RAM, SSD capacity, operating system, warranty, monitor adapters, mounting hardware, and any required peripherals before comparing totals. A bare system with less memory or storage is not a like-for-like alternative.
- Confirm the regional SKU. Product names can cover different configurations. Verify availability, included accessories, warranty terms, dimensions, and supported options for your country and the exact part number.
Model-specific checks that prevent expensive mistakes
| Before ordering… | Mini PC check | SFF desktop check |

| Graphics | Is graphics integrated or discrete, and what are the sustained limits for the intended software? | Which cards are officially supported, what are the length and height limits, and what power connectors are available? |
| Storage | How many M.2 or SATA positions are accessible, and which M.2 length and protocol are supported? | How many bays and connectors are present, and will a new drive conflict with a card or cage? |
| Thermals | Are there model-specific memory or power limits, such as the ROG NUC’s validated 64 GB limit? | Will the chosen card and drives receive adequate airflow in the selected chassis? |
| Physical fit | What are the computer, power-brick, mount, and cable dimensions? | What are the chassis dimensions, panel-access requirements, and clearance around the installed cards? |
Common decision mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by the category name
“Mini PC” can mean an integrated-graphics office box or a much faster compact gaming design. “SFF desktop” can mean a genuinely expandable tower-like layout or a proprietary chassis with limited options. Always compare the specific SKU and documentation.
Assuming every mini PC accepts standard desktop memory
Many compact systems use SO-DIMM modules, and compatibility depends on the model’s supported specifications. Check the memory guide before buying an upgrade. On an integrated-graphics system such as the PN64, also confirm that the modules can operate in the dual-channel arrangement ASUS specifies for optimal Iris Xe performance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Ignoring the power supply when planning a graphics upgrade
A free PCIe slot does not prove that a graphics card can run. Check the PSU rating, connectors, card dimensions, cooling, and manufacturer-supported options together.
Comparing incomplete configurations
A system with less RAM, a smaller SSD, no operating system, or a shorter warranty may look cheaper while delivering a different value. Normalize those items before deciding.
Expecting a universal benchmark answer
Performance varies with processor, graphics, memory channels, cooling, firmware, drivers, and the workload. Use results for the exact configuration and software whenever possible; do not treat a result from one mini PC as representative of all mini PCs.
When each choice is the better fit
Choose a mini PC when all of these are true
- Your primary constraint is footprint or placement.
- The selected model’s processor and graphics meet your applications’ requirements.
- You can live with its specific memory, storage, and port limits.
- You do not need an internal graphics card or several expansion cards.
- You have verified cooling, power-adapter, mounting, and service details for the exact SKU.
Choose an SFF desktop when all of these are true
- You expect to add an internal graphics card, storage drive, or network card.
- The chassis provides the required slots, bays, clearance, and power connectors.
- You can allocate more room than a mini PC requires and still meet your placement needs.
- Your workload benefits from sustained cooling or a discrete GPU.
- You have confirmed the regional configuration and future upgrade path.
Bottom line
Start with a mini PC for the smallest installation and straightforward placement, but judge it by the exact configuration. Start with an SFF desktop when internal graphics, storage, or network expansion is a requirement, using the same model-by-model verification. The ASUS PN64, ASUS ROG NUC, and Lenovo ThinkCentre M90s Gen 6 show why no broad category verdict can replace checking memory channels, thermal limits, slots, bays, graphics support, dimensions, and power for the system you will actually buy.
