Short answer: a mini PC usually wins on desk space, while a small-form-factor (SFF) desktop usually provides more room for drives, memory and half-height expansion cards. Neither category is inherently faster or quieter. The exact processor, graphics hardware, power limits, cooling system, fan profile, memory configuration and storage determine real-world results.
Use the form factor as a starting point, not a performance rating. The Intel NUC13VY slim chassis, for example, is listed at 117 × 112 × 37 mm. Dell lists the OptiPlex 5060 SFF at 290 × 92.6 × 292 mm. Those figures show the scale difference between two named products; they are not universal dimensions for every mini PC or SFF desktop.

What the two form factors mean
Mini PC
A mini PC is a compact computer built around a small motherboard and enclosure. Many models use laptop-style SO-DIMM memory, an external power brick and integrated graphics. Some have removable memory and storage; others solder one or both directly to the board. The small enclosure can be mounted behind a monitor or placed beside a router, but its internal volume limits the number of drives, cooling hardware and add-in cards it can accommodate.

An SFF desktop is larger than a mini PC but smaller than a conventional tower. It generally uses desktop-oriented components, an internal power supply and a case designed for service access. A typical SFF design can provide additional drive bays, more DIMM slots and one or more half-height PCIe slots. “SFF” is not a single standard, however: dimensions, slot layout, power supply and supported card length vary by manufacturer and model.

Size: how much space do you actually save?
| Example | Listed chassis dimensions | What the figure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Intel NUC13VY slim | 117 × 112 × 37 mm | A very shallow enclosure that can fit in spaces where a desktop case cannot. |
| Dell OptiPlex 5060 SFF | 290 × 92.6 × 292 mm | A substantially larger footprint and volume, with room for desktop-style expansion. |
| Dell OptiPlex 5060 Micro | Exact dimensions differ from the SFF model in Dell’s comparison | Useful reminder that “Micro” and “SFF” are separate chassis choices even within one product family. |
Measure the complete installation, not just the case. Leave clearance for ventilation, cable bends and access to the power button. A mini PC mounted behind a display may need room for the power adapter and video cables; an SFF desktop placed in a cabinet may need several centimetres of open space around its intake and exhaust. If you plan to add a larger drive, a PCIe card or a different cooler, include that hardware in your measurements.
Performance: compare the parts, not the label
Mini PCs are not automatically slow, and SFF desktops are not automatically fast. The NUC13VY documentation identifies a soldered 13th-generation processor, while the OptiPlex 5060 SFF belongs to a different desktop platform with its own processor choices. The published specifications do not provide a head-to-head benchmark, so no universal speed ranking is justified.
Identify the exact processor and graphics solution
Start with the full CPU model, not merely “Core i5,” “Ryzen 5” or a generation name. Record its core count, sustained power setting and whether the system allows the manufacturer to change those limits. For graphics, determine whether the computer relies on integrated graphics, a discrete GPU or a low-profile PCIe card. Two systems with similar CPU names can behave very differently when one has a higher power limit or dedicated graphics memory.

Account for sustained workloads
Short bursts can make a compact computer appear as fast as a larger desktop. Long renders, software builds, video exports, virtual machines and repeated game sessions expose cooling and power limits. Compare tests that run long enough to reach steady-state temperature, and check the memory and storage configuration used in the test. A benchmark result from a 32 GB dual-channel system cannot be assumed for an identical-looking machine shipped with one 8 GB module.
Match benchmarks to your work
- Office, web and streaming: prioritize responsive single-core performance, sufficient memory and quiet idle behavior.
- Photo and video work: check sustained CPU performance, hardware encode/decode support, storage speed and GPU acceleration in the applications you use.
- Compiling and virtual machines: look for enough cores, memory capacity and cooling headroom; a second drive can also help isolate workloads.
- 3D, CAD and gaming: verify the exact GPU, driver support, card length, power connector and thermal clearance. Integrated graphics may be adequate for light work but cannot be assumed to match a discrete card.
Noise: why size does not predict the answer
Noise depends on fan design, fan curve, component temperature, workload, room temperature, dust and placement. A small fan can produce a high-pitched sound at high speed, while a larger SFF fan may move the same air more slowly; the reverse can also occur with a poorly tuned desktop.
Intel’s NUC cooling guidance describes fan-control presets intended to minimize noise while maintaining cooling in normal desktop use. It also identifies sustained processor use of 75% or higher as a condition worth considering when evaluating thermal behavior. That is guidance about cooling control, not a sound-level measurement. The cited manufacturer material does not provide matched decibel readings for the NUC13VY and OptiPlex 5060 SFF.

How to make a fair noise comparison
- Place both systems in the same room and position, with identical clearance around their vents.
- Measure idle noise after the operating system has settled, then run the same sustained workload long enough for temperatures and fan speed to stabilize.
- Use the same sound meter location and background-noise conditions. Report the meter, distance and weighting if you publish the result.
- Repeat the test with the manufacturer’s default fan profile and with any documented quiet or performance profile.
- Note tonal changes, fan pulsing and coil whine separately from the average sound-pressure reading.
Without those controls, statements such as “all mini PCs are quieter” or “SFF desktops are loud” are guesses. Look for independent measurements of the exact SKU you intend to buy.

Memory
The NUC13VY specification lists two DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets and support for up to 64 GB. Its processor is soldered, so replacing the CPU is not a later upgrade path. Dell’s 5060 comparison lists greater memory-slot capacity for the SFF configuration than for the Micro version, but the exact maximum depends on the installed motherboard and processor generation.
Before ordering memory, verify all of the following for the exact model:
- DDR generation and SO-DIMM or full-size DIMM form factor
- Maximum capacity per slot and total supported capacity
- Supported speed and whether faster modules will downclock
- Whether one or two modules are installed, so you can preserve dual-channel operation
- Whether any memory is soldered and therefore not replaceable
Intel’s compatibility guidance directs buyers to the product-specific specification and the correct memory form factor. “SO-DIMM” is a useful search term, not proof that a kit fits every mini PC.
Storage
The NUC13VY documentation lists one M.2 PCIe Gen4 connector for NVMe storage, another M.2 connection with additional supported interfaces, and a SATA connection. Those interfaces do not mean every drive size or protocol is accepted in every slot. Confirm the M.2 keying, PCIe or SATA protocol, supported physical length and whether a thermal pad, screw, cable or mounting bracket is required.
SFF cases generally offer more internal drive capacity. In Dell’s OptiPlex 5060 comparison, the SFF version provides more drive-bay capacity than the Micro version. Check the exact cage layout before buying: a bay may be occupied by an optical drive, require a proprietary caddy or share a connector with another drive.

Processor and cooling
A soldered mini-PC processor cannot be swapped for a newer CPU. Some SFF desktops also use proprietary boards or power supplies, so a socketed processor does not guarantee a practical upgrade. Check firmware support, socket compatibility, cooler mounting, power delivery and the manufacturer’s supported CPU list before treating a CPU replacement as an option.
PCIe expansion
The cited NUC specification describes a compact integrated platform and does not state an SFF-style PCIe card bay. Dell lists half-height PCIe expansion slots for the OptiPlex 5060 SFF. That distinction matters if you need a capture card, additional networking, a storage controller or a discrete GPU.
For any add-in card, verify:
- Half-height or full-height bracket requirement
- Maximum card length and thickness
- Slot generation and lane configuration
- Auxiliary power connectors and total power budget
- Clearance from drive cages, fans and the side panel
- Operating-system and firmware support
Connectivity and everyday practicality
Port count is model-specific, but the design trade-off is consistent. A mini PC often exposes many external ports despite having little internal space, making it convenient for a fixed desk or digital-signage installation. An SFF desktop may offer fewer front-panel ports yet provide room for an internal card that adds the connectivity you need.

Wireless antennas, removable Wi-Fi modules and replaceable network cards also differ by model.
Power, thermals and reliability
Mini PCs commonly use an external adapter, which keeps heat and mains voltage outside the enclosure but adds a brick and cable to your desk. SFF desktops usually contain an internal power supply and may use proprietary dimensions or connectors. Replacing an SFF power supply with a standard unit is not always possible, especially when the case or motherboard uses vendor-specific wiring.
Keep vents unobstructed and clean dust from filters and heatsinks. In either form factor, rising fan speed, clock-rate drops during long workloads, unexpected shutdowns or a hot exhaust stream indicate that the system is operating near its thermal or power limits. A quieter fan profile can reduce noise but may lower sustained performance; a performance profile can do the opposite.

Cost and total ownership
Compare a complete, usable configuration rather than the bare chassis price. Include memory, storage, the operating-system license if it is not supplied, a mounting bracket, required cables and any expansion card. A mini PC may look inexpensive until you add a larger SSD and more memory. An SFF desktop may cost more initially but already include those parts and leave room for later additions.

Which should you choose?
Choose a mini PC when
- Desk, shelf or mounting space is the primary constraint.
- Your workload fits the chosen CPU and integrated-graphics capability.
- You value low weight and simple deployment over internal expansion.
- You need only modest memory and storage growth, and the model provides the sockets you require.
- You are comfortable verifying fan behavior from model-specific tests rather than assuming a noise advantage.
Choose an SFF desktop when
- You need a half-height PCIe card, additional internal drives or more memory slots.
- Your sustained workload benefits from desktop-class cooling or a higher power limit.
- You want easier access for servicing and component replacement.
- You can accommodate the larger footprint and internal power supply.
- You have checked the exact card, drive and power-supply compatibility for the chassis.
Consider neither without more evidence when
- The listing omits the exact CPU, GPU, memory arrangement or power limit.
- You require a specific expansion card but cannot confirm slot height, clearance and power.
- Noise is critical and no independent test measures the exact configuration.
- The manufacturer does not document supported memory, drive interfaces or firmware updates.
A practical buying and upgrade checklist
- Write down the workload. Separate bursty office use from sustained rendering, compiling, virtual machines or gaming.
- Record the exact parts. Note CPU model, GPU, memory modules, storage devices and configured power limits.
- Measure the installation. Include ventilation clearance, cable bends, power-brick space and access for upgrades.
- Map future upgrades. Count memory sockets, M.2 and SATA connectors, drive bays and usable PCIe slots.
- Validate compatibility. Check memory generation, drive protocol and length, card dimensions, power connectors and firmware support.
- Read model-specific tests. Prefer sustained performance and idle/load noise measurements for the exact SKU.
- Price the finished system. Add memory, storage, brackets, cables and any card before comparing alternatives.
- Plan maintenance. Confirm how to open the case, clean the heatsink and replace the fan or power adapter if needed.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming a smaller case is always quieter
Why it fails: fan size and control logic vary more than the category label suggests.
Fix: use controlled idle and sustained-load measurements for the exact model.
Buying laptop memory without checking the specification
Why it fails: SO-DIMM size alone does not establish DDR generation, speed or capacity support.
Fix: match the manufacturer’s memory list and confirm the number of sockets.
Assuming every M.2 slot accepts an NVMe drive
Why it fails: M.2 slots can support PCIe, SATA or different physical lengths.
Fix: verify protocol, keying and length for each connector, then obtain any required screw or cable.
Choosing a graphics card by performance alone
Why it fails: an SFF card can exceed the case length, bracket height, slot spacing or power budget.
Fix: check the card’s dimensions, half-height bracket, auxiliary power and the system’s available wattage.
Comparing benchmark numbers from different configurations
Why it fails: memory channel count, cooling mode and power settings can change the result substantially.
Fix: compare like-for-like configurations and sustained tests that match your workload.
Bottom line
Buy the mini PC when its tiny footprint and adequate, verified performance solve your main problem. Buy the SFF desktop when internal drives, memory capacity, half-height PCIe expansion or sustained cooling matter more than minimum size. For both, the decisive evidence is the exact SKU’s CPU and GPU, power behavior, cooling, memory and storage support—not the words “mini” or “SFF” on the product page.
