Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen: Which Is Better for Everyday Wear?

Neither mineral nor chemical sunscreen is automatically better for everyday wear. The better choice is a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that feels comfortable enough for you to apply consistently. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends those label features for both types; skin sensitivity and personal preference can help decide between them.

What is the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?

Check the product’s active-ingredient panel. Under the AAD’s consumer definition, sunscreen containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both is mineral (also called physical) sunscreen. A product without either is classified as chemical sunscreen. Products combining ingredients from both categories may be described as hybrid. The category alone does not tell you the level of protection: check the full label. AAD: How to select a sunscreen

How should you compare sunscreens for everyday use?

  • Broad spectrum: Look for this label claim. The FDA explains that SPF primarily reflects protection against sunburn, while a broad-spectrum claim means the sunscreen also protects against UVA.
  • SPF 30 or higher: This is the AAD’s everyday-use guidance. SPF is not a measure of how many extra hours you can stay in the sun.
  • Water resistance: Choose a product whose labeled duration suits your activity. FDA labels specify 40 or 80 minutes of water resistance; follow the product directions.
  • Comfort and finish: A formula you can tolerate and apply regularly is a practical fit. Official guidance does not establish that one category is universally more cosmetically elegant, more effective, or safer for everyone.

These recommendations come from AAD consumer guidance and FDA sunscreen guidance. AAD sunscreen label guidance · FDA: Sunscreen—How to Help Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Which type may suit sensitive skin?

The AAD recommends mineral sunscreen for people with sensitive skin. If sunscreen stings or burns when you apply it, the AAD advises trying a product containing only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This is guidance for finding a better personal fit, not evidence that all chemical sunscreens are unsafe or that every mineral formula will feel comfortable for every person. When should you reapply?

The AAD advises reapplying sunscreen every two hours and after toweling, sweating, or being in water. If you are swimming or sweating, follow the water-resistance duration on the label: the AAD notes that water-resistant products need reapplication after 40 minutes, and very water-resistant products after 80 minutes. The FDA likewise identifies 40- or 80-minute durations on sunscreen labels. Water resistance does not mean waterproof. AAD sunscreen label guidance · FDA sunscreen guidance

What does FDA ingredient guidance say?

As described in the FDA’s consumer Q&A accessed October 7, 2026, available safety evidence supports a proposal that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, at concentrations up to 25%, are generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE). For several other sunscreen ingredients, FDA says it needs additional data; that is not the same as finding that every product containing those ingredients is unsafe.

The same FDA Q&A reports that bemotrizinol was added to the U.S. over-the-counter sunscreen monograph by a final order dated June 10, 2026. It also reports that a September 10, 2026 final order removed PABA and trolamine salicylate. FDA said of that removal: “Consumers do not need to take any action as a result of today’s announcement.” That statement concerns the removal of those two ingredients, not which sunscreen category is better. A simple decision rule

  1. Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen labeled SPF 30 or higher.
  2. If your skin is sensitive or sunscreen stings or burns, consider a mineral formula containing only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
  3. Compare texture and finish, then use the formula you can apply consistently. For swimming or sweating, follow the water-resistance duration and reapplication directions on its label.
