The most reliable survival route to a woodland mansion is a woodland explorer map bought from a cartographer villager. Follow the map to the mansion, establish a bed-and-storage camp outside, and clear rooms methodically with a shield, ranged weapon, lighting, food and a retreat route. If cheats are enabled, /locate structure minecraft:mansion can return coordinates instead.

A mansion is not a formal Minecraft raid event. It is a generated Overworld structure in or near dark forest terrain, occupied by illagers and containing valuable loot. Evokers are the priority target because they summon damaging fangs and airborne vexes; defeating one can provide a totem of undying.

What a woodland mansion is—and why it is dangerous
Woodland mansions are very large, multi-room structures associated with dark forest biomes. Their corridors, stairways and rooms make combat different from an open-field fight: enemies can appear from several directions, sightlines are short, and a retreat can become confusing if you have not marked where you have been.
Minecraft Help identifies evokers, vindicators, allays and totems of undying in connection with mansions. The important combat threats are the vindicators and evokers. Vindicators attack at close range with axes. Evokers can create evoker fangs along the ground and summon vexes that fly, pursue you through cramped spaces and can pass through walls. That combination is why rushing from room to room usually costs more health and equipment than a careful sweep.

Exact room layouts and loot are generated with the world and can differ by game version. Treat examples below as planning guidance rather than a promise that every mansion will contain the same rooms or inventory.
Check your edition and version before choosing a route
Map trades, command syntax and some structure behavior can vary between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition and older releases. Confirm your edition and version before you set out, especially if you are following a tutorial written for a different release. The procedure below describes the current, commonly used command form and the standard survival approach; older versions may label the cartographer trade or locate command differently.

Mansion spacing and travel distance are determined by the generated world seed, so one world may place a mansion much farther away than another. Your map, not an assumed distance, is the useful measure.
How to find a woodland mansion
Survival method: trade for a woodland explorer map
A woodland explorer map from a cartographer is the principal non-cheat way to locate a mansion. It keeps the expedition within normal survival progression and gives you a destination even when the structure is far from your base.
- Find or create a cartographer villager. Bring the villager to a safe trading area and protect it from hostile mobs. If your world uses a different trade progression or the map is not offered at the expected level, check the villager’s edition and version behavior rather than assuming the mansion is unavailable.
- Advance the cartographer’s trades. Buy available offers until the explorer-map trade appears. The exact emerald and paper costs are not fixed in the supplied evidence, so check the price shown in your game.
- Buy the woodland explorer map. Keep it in your hotbar or another readily accessible slot while traveling. A map can lead across oceans, mountains and hostile terrain, so do not begin the final journey with irreplaceable items that you cannot replace.
- Read the mansion marker as a destination. Travel in the direction indicated by your player marker and the mansion icon. The route may require boats, bridges, tunnels or a temporary path through dangerous terrain. Pause to sleep and restock rather than spending all food and arrows before you arrive.
- Establish your camp when the structure comes into view. Put the camp outside the entrance, then make the final approach with only the equipment you need. Store spare valuables before entering.
The map is a navigation aid, not a guarantee that the nearest mansion is close. If the trip becomes a major expedition, record your coordinates and create a marked route so a death does not erase your progress.

Command method when cheats are enabled
With commands enabled, run /locate structure minecraft:mansion. In versions that support this form, the game returns coordinates for a mansion that you can use with your normal navigation tools or a teleport command. Command behavior and the exact response can differ by edition and version, so verify the syntax for your release if the command is rejected.
Commands are the fastest way to obtain a destination, but they change the survival character of the expedition. If your goal is a conventional survival achievement, use the cartographer map instead. If your priority is testing combat, building around a structure or recovering a world quickly, coordinates can remove the long travel leg.
Ordinary travel and late-game transport
After you have a destination, choose transport according to your equipment and recovery plan. Walking, boats and Nether-linked routes require more time but can be undertaken with early-game gear. A late-game player with an elytra and rockets can cover the same coordinate distance much faster, yet should still build a camp: speed reduces travel time, not the risk of losing gear inside the mansion.
Preparation checklist
Bring equipment for both close-quarters combat and a controlled retreat. A single weapon is not enough because rooms can force you into melee while an evoker may be easier to engage from a doorway or distance.

Keep your explorer map and irreplaceable items stored before the final approach when possible. Carry a working set of armor, weapons, food and tools; a death should cost a setback, not your entire world’s reserve.

Build a recovery camp before entering
Choose a visible point outside the mansion, preferably on level ground with a clear line back to the entrance. Light the area and use a small fence or other barrier to prevent a night-time surprise. Put a bed, a chest and, if available, an ender chest there. Store replacement armor, food, blocks, arrows and a spare shield.
Do not sleep in an unprotected room of the mansion as your first recovery plan. A camp outside gives you space to reorganize, and its position remains easy to identify after a death. Mark the entrance with torches or a distinctive block pattern. When you return, collect dropped equipment only after you have enough gear to survive the route back out.
Clear the mansion room by room
Think of the structure as a sequence of controlled encounters rather than one open raid. Your objective is to reduce the number of active threats, preserve a retreat route and prevent an unexplored corridor from becoming your escape path.
- Secure the entrance. Light the approach, place a few blocks that identify the doorway and confirm that your camp is reachable. Do not carry every valuable item through the first threshold.
- Choose one direction and mark it. Use torches, signs or a consistent block pattern at doors and intersections. Marking prevents loops and tells you which rooms are cleared.
- Open from cover. Stand to one side of a doorway, use a shield when appropriate and take ranged shots before stepping into a room. A doorway or wall can limit the number of enemies that reach you at once.
- Prioritize evokers. If an evoker is present, target it before ordinary looting. Its fangs create a ground hazard and its vex summons can turn a manageable room into a multi-angle attack. Ranged attacks are especially useful when you can keep a wall or doorway between you and the caster.
- Remove close-range threats. Once the evoker is down or the immediate spell hazard is controlled, fight vindicators from a position where you can retreat. Keep the shield ready, but do not rely on it after an axe attack disables it.
- Light and mark the room. Place lighting in the cleared area and leave a visible marker at the entrance. Loot only after hostile mobs are dealt with; stopping to open containers while an unexplored doorway is behind you creates avoidable risk.
- Maintain a retreat route. Recheck the path to the camp after every major section. If vexes appear, move toward open space and a known route instead of running deeper into the mansion.
- Restock in stages. Return to the camp when food, arrows, shield durability or health becomes marginal. A short resupply trip is cheaper than a death caused by trying to finish the entire structure in one push.
Vindicators: close-range axe attackers
Vindicators are most dangerous when they reach you in a narrow corridor. Use a doorway, corner or height difference to limit their approach, then strike while keeping room to retreat. Their axe attacks can disable a shield, so alternate between blocking, repositioning and attacking instead of holding the shield up continuously. If two or more enter at once, back through a marked route rather than allowing yourself to be surrounded.

Evokers deserve immediate attention. Minecraft’s official description says they summon evoker fangs and vexes, and the fangs add a ground-based hazard while vexes attack from the air. Open with a bow or crossbow from cover when possible. If you must close the distance, use walls and doorways to break sightlines, but keep moving so a fang attack does not catch you on the floor.

After an evoker is defeated, collect its drops only when the immediate room is secure. If you are continuing into more dangerous rooms, put a newly acquired totem of undying in your off-hand before moving on.
Vexes: why walls and corners are not absolute safety
Vexes can fly and pass through walls. A solid block between you and an evoker may stop a direct line of fire, but it is not a permanent answer once vexes are active. Move toward a wider, lit area or the entrance, keep your weapon ready and avoid trapping yourself in a one-block recess. Their ability to attack from the air is another reason to eliminate the evoker quickly rather than trading hits with ordinary mobs first.
How the totem of undying works
Evokers can drop a totem of undying. Minecraft’s official explanation describes it as a last-minute reprieve from fatal damage, but the item must be held in the off-hand for that effect. Carrying it in your inventory is not enough. Once you obtain one, open your inventory and place it in the off-hand slot before entering another high-risk area.
The totem is a safety net, not permission to ignore positioning. It does not prevent the damage that triggers it, and the mansion may contain another threat immediately after the effect saves you. Retreat, heal and reassess instead of assuming the next room is safe.

Exact room contents and layouts vary with the generated world and game version, so describe your haul as a set of possible rewards rather than a fixed checklist.

Separate guaranteed objectives from optional searching. First secure the hostile rooms and collect any evoker drops. Then search side rooms, storage areas and unusual architectural spaces at your own pace. Bring an ender chest or make return trips to the outside camp if the loot exceeds what you can safely carry.

For a first visit, the explorer map plus an outside camp offers the best balance of progression and recoverability. Use coordinates when the purpose is testing, building or quickly revisiting a known structure, and use fast flight only as transport rather than as a substitute for preparation.
Common failures and how to recover
The map journey consumes all your supplies
Stop before the mansion, establish the camp and make a dedicated resupply trip. Do not enter with one meal, a nearly broken shield and the last few arrows. Record the route or coordinates so the return trip is deliberate.
You lose the entrance inside the structure
Follow one branch at a time and mark every intersection. A consistent torch pattern is more reliable than memory. If necessary, place temporary blocks at cleared doors and remove them later while you loot.
An evoker creates vexes before you can reach it
Break line of sight, move toward a wider marked area and use ranged attacks. Do not run deeper into unknown rooms while trying to escape flying enemies. Once the evoker is down, wait until the immediate threat is controlled before looting.

Your shield stops working against a vindicator
Assume the axe attack has disabled it and switch to movement, cover and melee timing. Back through a doorway, create distance with blocks and re-engage only when you have room to retreat.
You die and cannot recover the gear
Return with the replacement kit from the camp instead of an empty inventory. Secure the route first, then collect dropped items. This is why spare tools, food, armor and a second shield belong outside the entrance rather than in the mansion.
