Witch huts generate in swamp biomes, and witches are best handled from a distance: they have 26 health, throw splash potions, and can heal themselves. Java players can locate a hut with /locate structure swamp_hut; Bedrock players can use /locate structure temple, which can return a witch hut among temple types. For farming, the hut area must remain at light level 7 or lower, be entirely inside a swamp for witch-exclusive spawning, and use no more than three spawning platforms.

What a witch hut is and where it generates
A witch hut is a small spruce-wood house that generates in a swamp biome. The structure has no door and includes a front porch. Its appearance is useful when exploring, but the building itself is more important as a potential witch-spawning site than as a shelter or loot chest: the hut’s designated area can produce witches when the spawning conditions are met.

How to find a witch hut
Java Edition command
In Java Edition, enable commands for the world and run:

/locate structure swamp_hutThe command returns the coordinates of the nearest structure matching the witch-hut structure ID. Travel to those coordinates, then check the surrounding biome rather than assuming every nearby patch of water or trees is part of the hut’s swamp.
Bedrock Edition command
Bedrock Edition uses a broader structure search:
/locate structure templeBedrock’s temple search can return the nearest temple type, including a witch hut. Because the result is not limited to witch huts, inspect the structure you reach and confirm that it is the small spruce hut with a porch.

How witches behave
Health and attack range
A witch has 26 health. It is a ranged hostile mob, so closing the distance does not simply turn the fight into a normal melee encounter. The witch throws splash potions, allowing one bottle to affect an area around its impact point. Approaching in a straight line gives repeated throws a predictable target and can let overlapping splash effects punish you before you reach melee range.

Beneficial potions and self-healing
Witches can drink beneficial potions to recover. A fight that appears nearly over can therefore last longer if you allow the witch time to drink. Keep dealing consistent damage instead of assuming that one low-health hit will finish it.
Immunity to poison and weakness
Poison potions and weakness potions are ineffective against witches. Witches are immune to poison, and weakness is not a useful offensive choice because witches do not rely on melee attacks. Spending ingredients on those effects does not solve the encounter.
How to fight a witch safely
- Start outside splash range. Approach with room to retreat, rather than walking directly into the hut or onto its porch.
- Use a bow or another weapon that can deal damage without forcing immediate contact. Ranged attacks let you keep the witch at a distance while it throws potions.
- Move laterally and avoid a straight approach. Change your position between shots so the witch cannot repeatedly land splash potions on the same path. Do not stand where a new potion can overlap an existing effect.
- Watch the witch’s drinking animation. A witch may consume a beneficial potion and recover, so continue to monitor its health and keep pressure on it.
- Reserve a retreat route. A clear path away from the hut, water, or nearby hostile mobs is more valuable than charging for a faster melee finish.
- Use ordinary defensive preparation. A shield, armor, food, and enough room to disengage reduce risk, but no single equipment set is guaranteed to make the fight safe.
- Consider direct damage or a harming potion. These are documented alternatives to poison and weakness when you need to finish the witch.
The safest general pattern is distance, movement, and patience. A fast kill is useful, but exposing yourself to several splash potions for a few extra seconds of damage usually creates more danger than it removes.

What witches drop
A normal witch kill can produce the following items:

Looting improves drop chances and overall output. The listed drops are the normal item pool; the potion drop is conditional rather than a guaranteed extra item. The redstone guarantee applies to versions 1.21 and above, so do not apply that statement to earlier versions.
Can you make a witch farm from a swamp hut?
Yes. A swamp hut can be converted into a dedicated witch farm, but the design must match the edition you are playing. Java and Bedrock farms use different spawning and collection details, so a platform layout made for one edition should not be treated as universal.

Conditions for witch-exclusive spawning
- Light level: Witches can spawn in the hut’s designated area at light level 7 or lower.
- Biome coverage: The whole hut must be inside a swamp for witches to be the only mobs able to spawn in that small area.
- Platform limit: One hut supports a maximum of three spawning platforms.
- Edition: Select a farm design specifically labeled for Java or Bedrock before copying its platform, transport, or collection arrangement.
Planning a farm
- Confirm the edition and version. The command, spawning behavior, and farm mechanisms are not interchangeable between Java and Bedrock.
- Verify the hut’s biome position. Check that the entire hut area lies in swamp terrain. If the structure crosses into another biome, the witch-only assumption no longer applies.
- Preserve darkness where witches must spawn. Keep the spawning area at light level 7 or lower. Lighting the platforms defeats the intended spawn condition.
- Choose no more than three spawning platforms. Adding extra platforms cannot increase output beyond the hut’s documented platform maximum.
- Spawn-proof the surroundings when the design requires it. Other valid spawning spaces can reduce the share of spawns reaching your farm, so dedicated builds commonly involve substantial surrounding work.
- Add the collection and damage system specified for your edition. The exact transport, killing, and redstone arrangement varies by design; do not assume a Java mechanism will function identically on Bedrock.
- Test before decorating or enclosing the build. Confirm that witches appear under the intended light and biome conditions, then check that drops reach the collection point.

Common problems and how to correct them
The locate command does not work
Check the edition first. Java requires /locate structure swamp_hut, while Bedrock uses /locate structure temple. The Bedrock command can identify several temple types, so a successful result still requires visual confirmation of the hut.
No witches appear at the hut
Measure the spawning area’s light level. The documented threshold is 7 or lower; lighting the hut or its platforms prevents the intended spawning. Next, verify that the hut area is entirely inside a swamp. If it is not, witch-exclusive spawning is not established for that location.
Other mobs are using the farm area
Recheck the biome boundary and the spawning spaces around the hut. The witch-only result depends on the whole hut being in a swamp, and surrounding valid spaces can interfere with a farm’s output. Remove or secure unwanted spawning locations according to the design you selected.

The witch keeps surviving after it is nearly dead
It may be drinking a beneficial potion. Keep distance, continue attacking with a bow or another weapon, and avoid abandoning the fight simply because its health was previously low.
Poison or weakness had no effect
That result is expected. Witches are immune to poison, and weakness is not an effective offensive tool against a ranged mob that does not use melee attacks. Switch to direct weapon damage or a harming potion instead.
Which approach should you choose?
- Choose a normal encounter if you need a modest amount of redstone, glowstone dust, sugar, gunpowder, bottles, spider eyes, or sticks and do not want to build infrastructure.
- Choose a farm if you need repeated output and are prepared to verify the swamp boundary, maintain light level 7 or lower, build up to three platforms, and complete edition-specific collection work.
- Prioritize combat preparation first if the hut is in dangerous terrain. A bow, armor, food, shield, and retreat path address the witch’s ranged splash attacks without relying on ineffective poison or weakness potions.
- Use the version-specific drop information when planning materials. The redstone guarantee is documented for 1.21 and later, while Looting improves chances rather than guaranteeing every item.
The Bottom Line
Find witch huts in swamps, use the correct edition command, fight from range, and never rely on poison or weakness. For farming, keep the hut fully inside a swamp, maintain light level 7 or lower, and use no more than three spawning platforms.
