Minecraft Strider Guide: How to Tame, Ride and Travel Safely Across Lava

To “tame” a Minecraft strider, saddle it and control it with a warped fungus on a stick. Striders do not have a permanent, wolf-style ownership state. Find one on a Nether lava sea, use a saddle, mount it, then hold the fungus-on-a-stick to steer and boost. Plan a solid landing platform before you dismount: the strider can cross lava, but you can still take damage from lava, falls, hostile mobs or an unsafe exit.

What a strider is and why it matters

A peaceful Nether lava specialist

A strider is a peaceful, fireproof Nether mob that walks on the surface of lava. It was designed to solve one of the Nether’s biggest travel problems: crossing broad lava lakes without constructing a long bridge. Minecraft gameplay developer Brandon Pearce described it as “the only non-aggressive mob in the Nether,” and explained that the design goal was to let players traverse Nether lava lakes.

The mount’s value is access. A bridge still works when you need a permanent route, storage, rails or a protected corridor, but a strider can take you directly over a lake with only a saddle and a control item. It is especially useful when a lava sea blocks the route to a bastion, fortress or another Nether destination.

What “taming” means for a strider

Minecraft players commonly ask how to tame a strider, but the game does not describe a permanent ownership system like the one used for wolves. In practical terms, taming means making the mob rideable with a saddle and directing it with a warped fungus on a stick. If you leave it unsaddled, it remains a normal wandering strider rather than becoming a permanently assigned pet.

Where to find a strider

Search lava seas and lakes

Look across the surface of large Nether lava seas and smaller lava lakes. A strider may be moving alone or among other striders, and a saddled one can occasionally be found already equipped. Because the mob stands on lava, searching from a shore, ledge or temporary platform is safer than swimming or dropping into the lake to reach it.

Use warped fungus to bring one closer

Hold warped fungus while you approach. Within a short range, the fungus attracts a strider toward you, allowing you to guide it toward a reachable shoreline or a prepared boarding point. Keep your route open: a narrow ledge, overhang or one-block gap can leave the mob below you while you are exposed to lava.

Prepare the approach before you lure it

Place a short bridge, a landing pad or another solid platform at the point where you intend to mount. If the target is far from land, build from a protected position and avoid standing on a single unsupported block over the lake. A Fire Resistance potion is an optional but sensible safeguard when the approach requires working beside or crossing lava. It protects the player from lava damage for its active duration, but it does not remove fall, hostile-mob or dismount risks.

Equipment checklist

Item What it does Important detail
Saddle Makes the strider rideable. Saddles can come from loot, fishing, trading or a strider that is already saddled, as documented for the relevant advancement.
Warped fungus Lures striders and breeds them. Hold it near a strider to attract the mob; feed it to two striders to trigger breeding.
Warped fungus on a stick Steers a mounted strider and provides a boost. Craft it from a fishing rod, including a damaged fishing rod, plus warped fungus.
Fire Resistance potion Reduces the danger of approaching or crossing lava. Optional protection for the player; it is not a substitute for a landing platform or careful dismount.
Building blocks Create an approach, emergency ledge and destination platform. Use enough blocks to make a stable route rather than relying on a one-block perch.

How to saddle, mount and control a strider

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Choose the target. Find a strider on the surface of a Nether lava lake or sea. Decide where you want to go before mounting, because steering is easier when the destination and landing block are already visible.
  2. Make the approach safe. Reach the shore or build a platform near the strider. Use Fire Resistance if the route requires crossing or working immediately beside lava.
  3. Lure the mob if necessary. Hold warped fungus and wait for the strider to move toward you. Keep the fungus selected until it reaches the boarding area.
  4. Equip the saddle. Use the saddle on the strider. The mob is now rideable, but it still needs the fungus-on-a-stick for directed movement.
  5. Mount the strider. Use the normal mount/interact control for your edition and platform. Check that you are seated before moving away from the platform.
  6. Select the warped fungus on a stick. While mounted, hold the item and face the route you want to follow.
  7. Steer and boost. The strider follows your facing direction while you hold the control item. Use the item’s boost action when you need extra movement, such as when leaving a shore or correcting a route across open lava.
  8. Approach the destination slowly. Turn toward a solid block or platform with enough room for both the strider and your player. Do not aim at a thin ledge that could leave you standing over lava after dismounting.

The core setup is intentionally simple: Minecraft’s design explanation summarizes it as, “All you need is a saddle and a warped fungus on a stick, then giddyup – you have yourself a mount!”

How to dismount without falling into lava

Before pressing the dismount/use control, aim at a reachable solid block. The goal is to leave the strider beside or on a safe platform rather than stepping directly into the lava below. If the destination is cramped, widen it first. Looking at the landing surface also gives you a visual check that the strider has reached the correct side of the lake.

How to cross a lava lake safely

Plan the route, not just the destination

Mark the far shore or build a destination pad before you set out. A strider can walk over the lava surface, but it does not make every route safe. Lavafalls, netherrack overhangs, hostile mobs and narrow shorelines can force a sudden turn. A broad platform at the far end gives you room to stop, look around and dismount.

Keep the player protected

  • Do not confuse a fireproof mount with player immunity. The strider can cross lava; the rider can still be hurt by lava contact, a fall, hostile mobs or a poorly timed dismount.
  • Use Fire Resistance for difficult approaches. It is most valuable when you must build beside lava or recover from an accidental drop, but it does not prevent other forms of damage.
  • Carry a route back. A short bridge or emergency ledge can save a ride if the target shore is blocked or a mob knocks you off course.
  • Watch the ceiling and shore. The open surface is not the only danger. A hostile mob on a ledge can attack while you are concentrating on steering.

Why the strider may look uncomfortable on land

Striders are most comfortable in lava. On land they turn purple and shiver. Minecraft’s official explanation notes that players often make lava pools to keep them warm, although the game does not require a player-built pool for the mob to remain usable mechanically. Treat the color change as a warning that the mount is out of its preferred environment, not as proof that it has been damaged or permanently lost.

Keep rain away

Rain is dangerous for a strider when it is in a rainy Overworld area. Keep the mob under cover or return it to a protected environment rather than leaving it exposed. A roof also prevents the purple, shivering state caused by cold conditions on land.

How to stop a strider from freezing or falling

Use lava as its normal parking place

When you finish a trip, leave the strider on a safe lava surface or in a deliberately built lava pool. If you must keep it on land, make a covered pen with a clear, solid floor and a route wide enough for mounting. The official game discussion says players create lava pools for warmth, but those pools are a comfort and storage choice rather than a stated mechanical requirement.

Build a boarding and landing system

A simple two-platform arrangement is safer than trying to mount from an improvised ledge. Put one platform at the starting shore and another at the destination. Connect them with a bridge only where you need a protected walking route; the strider itself can travel across the lava between the two points. Add walls or a roof at the landing area if hostile mobs or rain are likely.

Control the final few blocks

Use the fungus-on-a-stick to line up the strider with the platform, then stop turning until its feet are over solid ground. Dismount only after you can see the block you will occupy. This prevents the common failure where the mount reaches the shore but the player exits on the lava-facing side.

Luring and breeding striders

Lure a strider

  1. Stand on a safe shore or platform within short range of the strider.
  2. Hold warped fungus.
  3. Wait for the strider to approach, then lead it toward your boarding area.
  4. Put the fungus away or switch to the saddle once the mob is positioned.

Warped fungus is the preferred lure because it works at short range and is also the food used for breeding.

Breed two striders

  1. Bring two striders together on a safe lava-adjacent platform or in a controlled area.
  2. Feed warped fungus to each strider.
  3. When both enter love mode, they produce a baby strider.
  4. Keep the young strider in a protected area while it grows.

Community references commonly report roughly 20 minutes for a baby to reach adulthood and a parent cooldown of about five minutes. Those timings can vary by edition or version, so treat them as approximate rather than universal fixed timers. The breeding method itself—warped fungus supplied to two striders—is the dependable part.

Strider advancements and what they require

Advancement Requirement Practical route
This Boat Has Legs Ride and boost a strider with a warped fungus on a stick. Saddle a strider, mount it, hold the fungus-on-a-stick and activate the boost while riding.
Feels Like Home Ride a strider 50 blocks on lava in the Overworld. Move a strider into the Overworld, create a suitable lava route and travel the required 50 blocks while mounted.

The 50-block distance is the specific documented figure for Feels Like Home. Because transporting and riding a strider outside the Nether introduces additional hazards, build the Overworld lava route and landing area before attempting the advancement.

Strider versus other ways to cross lava

The best choice depends on whether you need a quick crossing, a permanent road or a route that can be reused without a living mount.

Option Lava access Required equipment Control or steering Main safety trade-off Best use
Strider Direct travel over a lava surface. Saddle and warped fungus on a stick; warped fungus helps with luring. Face the destination while mounted; use the item to boost. Mounting and dismounting remain dangerous, and the player is not fireproof. Fast scouting or crossing a large lake without building across it.
Bridge Works over lava without requiring a mob. A large supply of building blocks and time to place them. No mount control; the route itself determines movement. Building exposes you to lava, falls and hostile mobs, but the finished route can be safer to reuse. Permanent corridors, bases, rails and repeatedly traveled routes.
Boat Not a general lava-travel solution. Boat and a usable non-lava surface. Normal boat steering where the boat functions. It does not replace a strider for crossing a Nether lava sea. Water travel, not open Nether lava.
Other mounts Not established here as a substitute for a lava-walking strider. Varies by mob and edition. Varies by mob. Do not assume another mount provides the strider’s lava capability. Use only where that mount’s own terrain and control rules fit the route.

Troubleshooting common problems

The strider will not come to you

Check that warped fungus is actually selected and that you are close enough for the lure effect. Move to a wider, safer platform instead of chasing the mob along a narrow shore. If another block or ledge separates you from the lava surface, reposition so the strider has a clear path.

I saddled it, but I cannot steer

A saddle makes the mob rideable; it is not the steering item. Mount the strider while holding the warped fungus on a stick, then face the route and use the item’s boost when needed. If you are still holding ordinary warped fungus, switch to the crafted fungus-on-a-stick.

The strider is shivering and purple

That appearance indicates it is on land or in a cold, exposed situation rather than comfortably on lava. Move it to a protected lava area or a covered pen. The game’s lava-pool advice is about keeping the mob warm; it is not a requirement that every pen contain lava.

I fell while trying to dismount

For the next attempt, build a broader landing platform, face the solid block and dismount only when the target surface is visible. Fire Resistance can reduce lava damage during recovery, but it cannot prevent a fall or attacks from nearby hostile mobs.

I cannot find a saddle

Look for saddles through loot, fishing or trading, or search for a strider that already has one. Once you have a saddle, keep it with your Nether travel kit so a newly found strider can be used immediately.

Edition and update considerations

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition can differ, and Minecraft mechanics may change in updates. The core guide—find a strider on Nether lava, saddle it, use a warped fungus on a stick and dismount onto solid ground—applies to the standard strider system. Do not rely on an unverified edition-specific speed, submerged-riding behavior or exact breeding timer. Check the controls and current mechanics for the edition and version you are playing before designing a large transport system around them.

A reliable first-trip checklist

  • Carry a saddle and a crafted warped fungus on a stick.
  • Bring warped fungus for luring and, if needed, breeding.
  • Build or identify a safe starting platform and a solid destination platform.
  • Carry Fire Resistance when the approach or recovery route involves significant lava exposure.
  • Keep the strider on lava or under cover when you are not riding.
  • Face solid ground before dismounting.
  • Remember that the mount is fireproof, not the player.
