To make stained glass in Minecraft, place one dye in the center of a crafting table and surround it with eight regular glass blocks. You receive eight stained-glass blocks in that dye’s color. Minecraft has 16 dye-linked stained-glass colors. Those blocks can become panes, and either blocks or panes can recolor a beacon beam. For dark mob farms, use tinted glass instead: it blocks light, while stained glass remains a transparent decorative material.

What stained glass does in Minecraft
Stained glass is a transparent building block with a colored tint. It lets you see through a window while changing the way the opening reads against the sky, terrain or interior lighting. Because the color comes from the block itself, it is useful for windows, skylights, domes, mosaics, observation rooms and decorative beacon installations.

The recipe is deliberately economical: one dye and eight glass blocks produce eight matching stained-glass blocks. You do not need a separate recipe for each color; the dye determines the result. Mojang describes the material as regular glass surrounded by any color of dye, with the option to turn it into panes for larger window projects.
Stained glass is not the same as tinted glass. Tinted glass is designed to keep light out, which makes it useful for looking into a dark mob farm without changing its spawning conditions. Stained glass changes appearance and color but should be treated as a transparent decorative block, not as a light-blocking substitute.

How to craft stained glass
Materials to gather
- Eight regular glass blocks: Smelt sand or red sand in a furnace, blast furnace or another compatible smelting setup, then keep the resulting glass as blocks.
- One dye: Any dye from Minecraft’s 16-color palette works. The finished glass takes the dye’s color.
- A crafting table: The recipe uses the full 3×3 crafting grid.
Make sure the glass is regular glass rather than an already colored block. The recipe consumes the eight glass blocks and the dye in one operation, so count your materials before opening the grid.
Use the 3×3 recipe
- Open a crafting table to display the 3×3 grid.
- Put one dye in the exact center slot.
- Place one regular glass block in each of the other eight slots, surrounding the dye on all sides and corners.
- Take the eight stained-glass blocks from the output slot and move them to your inventory.
The arrangement matters. A dye placed off-center, or a grid with fewer than eight glass blocks, will not produce the stained-glass recipe. The output color follows the dye you used, not the color of nearby blocks or the biome where you are crafting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the recipe does not appear
- Check that the crafting interface is a 3×3 crafting table rather than the 2×2 personal grid.
- Confirm that every surrounding slot contains regular glass blocks; panes and tinted glass are different items.
- Check the center slot for a valid dye. Some editions expose alternate base materials for particular dyes, but edition-specific substitutions are not universal.
- Remove extra items from the grid. A ninth glass block or a second dye changes the pattern and prevents the recipe from matching.
- Verify that you are playing a version with the current stained-glass recipe. Historical item handling and identifiers have changed, especially between Java and Bedrock data systems.
All 16 stained-glass colors
The stained-glass palette follows Minecraft’s 16 dye-linked colors. The names below are the standard color names used for the corresponding dyes and blocks.
| Color | Typical visual character | Useful build role |
|---|---|---|
| White | Very light, soft tint | Bright skylights, neutral highlights and frost-like patterns |
| Orange | Warm orange glow | Sunset windows, autumn motifs and fire-themed interiors |
| Magenta | Strong pink-purple tone | Accents, fantasy crests and high-contrast mosaic details |
| Light blue | Pale blue tint | Ice, water, sky and cool daylight designs |
| Yellow | Bright golden tint | Sun symbols, lamps and focal points in a pattern |
| Lime | Vivid yellow-green | Leaves, magical effects and spring or jungle palettes |
| Pink | Soft rosy tint | Flowers, banners and gentle two-color windows |
| Gray | Muted charcoal-gray tint | Smoke, industrial motifs and subdued borders |
| Light gray | Faint neutral gray | Clouds, stone-like highlights and low-contrast shading |
| Cyan | Blue-green tint | Ocean builds, prism-like designs and cool accent bands |
| Purple | Deep blue-purple tint | Night scenes, magical windows and royal color schemes |
| Blue | Clear, saturated blue | Water, sky panels and strong geometric fields |
| Brown | Earthy brown tint | Woodland themes, autumn shading and warm neutral details |
| Green | Natural green tint | Forest, garden and nature-themed windows |
| Red | Strong red tint | Heraldry, warning motifs and warm focal sections |
| Black | Very dark transparent tint | Outlines, dramatic contrast and night-themed designs |
Color appearance depends on what is behind the glass and on the surrounding light. A vivid panel against daylight can appear much darker when viewed from inside a room at night. Build a small sample wall before committing to a large palette.
Stained-glass blocks versus stained-glass panes
Stained-glass blocks and stained-glass panes use the same dye colors, but they create different physical forms. The blocks occupy full cubes, making them suitable for thick walls, skylights, domes and mosaics. Panes are thin window elements that connect into larger uninterrupted surfaces, so they are often better for a façade where you want the frame to remain narrow.

| Decision | Choose stained-glass blocks when… | Choose stained-glass panes when… |
|---|---|---|
| Wall depth | The window sits in a thick wall or a layered frame. | The opening is a thin wall insert or a long façade. |
| Pattern construction | You are making a solid mosaic, skylight or stepped shape. | You want slim mullions and a broad, continuous window surface. |
| Beacon installation | You are building a substantial color filter above a beacon. | You want the same beam-color effect with a lighter-looking structure. |
| Structural style | The glass itself should read as a solid architectural mass. | The frame should dominate while the colored area stays visually thin. |
To make panes, use the normal glass-pane crafting pattern with stained-glass blocks in place of regular glass. The resulting panes retain the dye color. Plan the surrounding frame first: panes can make a window look larger, while blocks provide more control over depth and stepped edges.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCan stained glass change a beacon beam?
Yes. Placing stained glass or stained-glass panes in the beacon’s beam path changes the beam to that glass’s color. The referenced Minecraft documentation states that panes have the same beam effect as stained-glass blocks. This lets you create a colored beacon without changing the beacon’s selected power effect.
Basic beacon color setup
- Build and activate the beacon on a valid mineral-block pyramid.
- Leave a clear vertical path above the beacon so the beam can travel upward.
- Place a stained-glass block or pane in that path.
- View the beam from a distance and adjust the glass position or color until the result matches your build.
For a single-color beam, use one color of glass. For a more elaborate installation, stack different colors in the beam path to create a changing or blended appearance. Test the result from the locations where players will actually see it; atmospheric distance, weather and surrounding blocks affect how intense the color appears.
Use blocks when the beacon is part of a thick tower, roof or enclosed monument. Use panes when you want the beam filter to look slender or when the surrounding architecture already uses pane windows. Keep the beam path open except for the colored glass and any elements your design deliberately places there.
Stained glass and tinted glass: the important difference
| Property | Stained glass | Tinted glass |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Colored, transparent decoration and construction | Viewing dark areas while preventing light from passing through |
| Light behavior | Do not treat it as a light-blocking material | Blocks light, which is why it suits dark mob-farm inspection windows |
| Beacon use | Changes the beam color | Not the colored-beam material described by the stained-glass recipe |
| Best examples | Cathedrals, skylights, mosaics, domes and decorative towers | Mob-farm observation ports and other dark-room viewing windows |
Choose based on function rather than appearance. If the goal is a colorful window, craft stained glass. If the goal is to inspect a dark farm without introducing light, select tinted glass and design the viewing area around its light-blocking behavior.

A reliable stained-glass window design process
1. Choose a limited palette
Start with two to five related colors rather than trying to use all 16 at once. A small palette gives each section a clearer role at Minecraft’s block scale. Reserve one dark color, often black, gray or a deep complementary shade, for outlines and separators. This keeps adjacent colors from visually merging.
2. Decide the motif before placing glass
Sketch the window on graph paper, a map or a temporary wall. Simple symbols, flowers, crests and geometric diamonds survive the game’s block scale better than tiny realistic drawings. Mark each color region before collecting materials so you can estimate how much dye and glass you need.
3. Scale the motif up
A one-block-wide curve rarely reads as a curve from a distance. Give major shapes enough blocks or panes to establish their silhouette, then add small highlights only after the main form is recognizable. For a large façade, repeat a simple unit—such as a diamond, stripe or quatrefoil—instead of forcing a tiny complex image to fit.
4. Add an opaque border
Frame the colored area with dark wood, stone, copper or another opaque block. The border separates similar hues and makes the window legible against both bright sky and dark interiors. Use a thicker frame around a large mosaic and a slimmer frame around a narrow pane window.

5. Select blocks or panes by depth
Use blocks for a deep reveal, stepped arch, skylight or beacon structure. Use panes for a thin wall, long uninterrupted façade or a window where the frame should be the dominant architectural feature. Mixing the two can create a recessed border: panes in the center, blocks around the edge.

6. Test three lighting conditions
- Daylight: Check whether pale colors disappear against the sky.
- Night: Look for colors that become too dark to distinguish.
- Interior lighting: Verify that the palette still separates when light sources are behind the glass.
If the pattern loses contrast, widen the dark outlines, replace one neighboring color or move the light source. Do not judge the final palette from a single angle or time of day.

Small two-color window
Begin with a simple diamond or cross using one light color and one dark outline. This is inexpensive, easy to repeat and suitable for a starter house, trading hall or compact chapel. Make several identical windows rather than one oversized panel so the building gains a consistent rhythm.

Build a circular impression from concentric squares or stepped octagons. Use a dark frame, two related middle tones and a bright center. The design reads well in stone churches, towers and fortified gates because the heavy frame gives the transparent center a clear silhouette.
Gradient skylight
Arrange pale blue, cyan and white from the outside edge toward the center, then place the skylight over a room with a contrasting floor. A broad roof opening gives the colors enough area to read and lets the changing daylight become part of the design.
Flower or leaf motif
Use green for stems and leaves, then reserve pink, magenta, red or yellow for the bloom. Keep the outline opaque and mirror the motif across multiple windows. This works especially well in gardens, greenhouse corridors and village-style homes.

Heraldic shield
Divide a tall window into bold fields—such as red and white or blue and yellow—and place a simple central symbol. Strong vertical and horizontal boundaries are easier to recognize than fine detail, especially when the shield is mounted high on a castle wall.
Ocean or prism wall
Combine blue, light blue and cyan with occasional white highlights. Use panes for a long aquarium-like façade or blocks for a thick underwater-themed room. Dark framing prevents the cool colors from blending into the surrounding water.
Nether-inspired furnace room
Use red, orange and black around a warm interior light source. Keep black or gray as the structural outline and let orange occupy the focal sections. The palette remains readable at night and reinforces a forge, portal room or industrial hall.
Beacon crown
Build a compact tower around a beacon, then place colored glass or panes in the beam path. Match the beam color to the tower’s banner, roof or surrounding district. A restrained two-color scheme usually looks cleaner than a different color on every level.
Planning materials and avoiding waste
Because one recipe consumes eight glass blocks for eight stained-glass blocks, plan the window’s area before crafting. Count the colored cells in your sketch, then prepare a small surplus for replacements and pattern changes. If you are using panes, decide the pane layout first so you do not craft more full blocks than the design requires.

Natural generation and edition notes
Crafting is the normal way to obtain the colors you need, but naturally generated examples exist. Wiki documentation records magenta stained glass in End cities and brown stained glass in trail ruins. Treat those as location-specific generation examples rather than a dependable replacement for the recipe.
Bedrock and Education documentation describes substitutions for some base dye materials, including bone meal, ink sacs, lapis lazuli and cocoa beans, in relevant crafting contexts. Those substitutions should not be assumed to work identically in Java Edition. Historical Java and Bedrock item data has also changed, so commands, identifiers and exact inventory instructions should be checked against the edition and version you are actually using.
Before following a command or tutorial
- Identify the edition: Java, Bedrock or Education.
- Check the game version, especially if the tutorial uses item IDs, commands or structure data.
- Confirm whether the material listed is a dye or an edition-specific substitute.
- Test the recipe in a temporary world before using it in a survival build.
Quick decisions for common projects
| Project goal | Recommended approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Decorative house window | Two or three colors with a dark opaque frame | Simple contrast remains readable at small scale. |
| Large cathedral or castle mosaic | Stained-glass blocks, four or five colors, oversized motifs | Blocks provide depth and enough area for recognizable symbols. |
| Thin modern façade | Stained-glass panes with repeated vertical sections | Panes keep the wall visually light and continuous. |
| Colored beacon | Stained glass or panes in the beam path | Either form changes the beam color. |
| Dark mob-farm inspection window | Tinted glass | Its purpose is to block light while preserving visibility. |
| Night-themed tower | Blue, purple, black or gray with a bright accent | Dark framing and one focal hue preserve contrast after sunset. |
Frequently overlooked details
- Transparency does not guarantee brightness: A colored pane can look muted when the room behind it is dark.
- Frame materials affect color perception: Light stone makes colors appear more vivid, while dark blocks increase drama but can swallow subtle hues.
- Scale determines legibility: A pattern that looks clear up close may become an indistinct patch from the ground.
- Beacon placement is architectural: The colored beam is most effective when the tower, roofline and surrounding skyline leave it visible.
- Edition differences matter: Recipe substitutions and identifiers are not safe to copy between editions without checking the target version.
Stained glass at a glance
The core workflow is consistent: gather regular glass, choose one of the 16 dye colors, place the dye in the center of a 3×3 crafting table, surround it with eight glass blocks and collect eight stained-glass blocks. Convert those blocks to panes when the design benefits from thin window elements. Use stained glass to color a beacon beam, but use tinted glass when the requirement is light exclusion for a dark farm. For the best-looking window, limit the palette, enlarge the motif, frame it with an opaque material and inspect it in daylight, at night and under interior lighting.
