Shulkers are hostile, shell-covered mobs found in End Cities. Their homing bullets can turn a safe-looking room into a fatal fall by applying levitation, so the reliable approach is to enter with a shield, ranged weapon, solid cover and a planned route away from ledges. Shulkers can also teleport when attacked, which means every encounter requires a scan of nearby walls and ceilings.

The reward is worth preparing for: two shulker shells and one chest craft a shulker box, a portable container that keeps its inventory when broken. The exact shell rule and available farming mechanics depend on whether you play Java or Bedrock and on your game version.

A shulker is a hostile, cube-shaped End mob that occupies a shell attached to the architecture of an End City. End Cities are built largely from purpur blocks, and the shulker’s purple shell can blend into walls, corners and ceilings. You normally discover one while entering a room, climbing a tower or crossing a bridge rather than while traveling through the open End.
End Cities are dangerous even before a shulker fires. Their rooms and bridges can open directly onto the void or onto long drops, and a fight can push you away from the platform you intended to use. Treat every city as a vertical combat area: identify solid walls, ceilings, floors and escape routes before opening containers.

How a shulker attacks
When a shulker notices a player, it opens its shell and launches a shulker bullet. Mojang describes the projectile as following the grid: it flies in straight-line segments and then makes 90-degree turns while pursuing its target. This is why a bullet can appear to “bend” around the architecture instead of traveling in a simple curve. Jens “Jeb” Bergensten described the design as a cube-shaped mob whose projectiles “follow the grid, chasing after the player by flying in straight paths and then doing 90 degree turns.”
A bullet can be destroyed with a weapon or a shield, according to Mojang’s description. Solid blocks are also practical cover because they interrupt the projectile’s line through the city’s corridors. The cover advice is a tactical response to the documented pathing, not a guarantee that every angle or timing will be safe.

Why shulker bullets are so dangerous
A successful hit applies levitation. Your character begins to float upward, often at the exact moment you are trying to cross a bridge or loot a chest. A second bullet can hit while you are airborne, extending the problem and carrying you above the platform. Mojang specifically warns that repeated hits can leave a player floating up and then falling to their death.
The danger comes from the combination of status effect and terrain:
- Vertical exposure: levitation can lift you above a wall, roof or bridge railing.
- Reduced control of the fight: you may be unable to reach the shulker while drifting upward.
- Repeat hits: another bullet can extend your time in the air.
- Fall damage or the void: losing the platform is often more serious than the initial hit.
There is no universal combat-success percentage or guaranteed strategy. Your safest plan is to prevent the first hit, break line of sight quickly when a bullet appears and keep your movement pointed toward a solid landing area.
Prepare before entering an End City
Preparation should solve two separate problems: stopping projectiles and surviving a bad launch. Bring equipment that lets you fight without standing in the shulker’s doorway, and carry enough building material to create cover or a temporary railing.

Essential equipment
- Shield: Mojang identifies a shield as a way to destroy an incoming bullet. Keep it selected or immediately accessible rather than buried in your inventory.
- Bow or another ranged weapon: an open shulker can be attacked from farther away, reducing the time you spend beside a ledge.
- Solid blocks: use them to seal a line of sight, raise a short wall, bridge a gap or mark a safe landing platform.
- Food and spare tools: a long city run can involve several rooms and repeated retreats, so do not enter with only the supplies needed for one fight.
- A clearly identified return route: mark the entrance, bridges and vertical transitions so a retreat does not become a second navigation problem.
Read the room before looting
At each doorway, pause long enough to locate the nearest wall, ceiling, floor edge and drop. Decide where you will stand if a bullet appears. A chest is not a safe objective if opening it leaves your back to a void or puts the only cover behind the shulker.
Step-by-step shulker combat
- Enter with your shield ready. Keep your view moving across the walls and ceiling. A closed shell can look like part of the purpur structure, so do not focus only on the floor.
- Choose a landing zone. Before provoking the mob, identify a broad platform or enclosed section where you can survive levitation. Avoid beginning a fight on the outer edge of a bridge.
- Watch for the opening shell and projectile. The shulker opens to fire. Once a bullet is visible, stop treating the room as ordinary melee space and move toward your planned cover.
- Break line of sight. Step behind a solid block, doorway or wall segment. Because the bullet follows straight sections and right-angle turns, changing the geometry between you and the projectile is usually more useful than running in a straight line along an exposed bridge.
- Return fire from cover or distance. Use a bow or other ranged weapon while the shell is open. Peek only long enough to aim, then return to cover if another projectile is traveling toward you.
- Block or destroy a dangerous bullet. Mojang states that bullets can be destroyed with a weapon or shield. If you cannot reach cover before impact, use the shield rather than continuing to attack the mob.
- If levitated, steer toward the platform. Do not chase the shulker while rising. Use the available movement to remain over a solid surface and avoid drifting over an exterior edge. Keep watching for a second bullet.
- Recheck the structure after every hit. A shulker may teleport when attacked. Scan adjacent walls, the ceiling and nearby rooms instead of assuming the original opening is still the attack position.
- Loot only after the room is quiet. Confirm that nearby shulkers are closed or defeated, then collect shells and city loot from a position that still leaves a route back to safety.
How to handle bullets and levitation
When a bullet is approaching in a straight corridor
Do not rely on outrunning it down the same corridor. Move behind a solid block or around a corner so the projectile must negotiate the structure. The documented right-angle pathing explains why a properly placed corner can buy time, while an open, straight bridge gives the bullet an unobstructed route.
When the bullet turns toward you
Use the shield or a weapon to destroy it, then relocate. Remaining in the same opening invites the shulker to fire again. A successful block is an opportunity to reset your position, not a reason to stand still and trade shots.
When levitation has already started
Prioritize a safe descent over damage. Aim your movement toward the center of the nearest platform, roof or enclosed floor. If the route is open to the void, place blocks when possible to create a landing surface or wall. A second hit can keep you airborne, so keep your camera moving and look for the next projectile while you steer.
When you lose sight of the shulker
Stop advancing until you have checked the surrounding geometry. Teleportation means the mob may now be behind you, above the doorway or on a different wall. Search systematically: scan the original wall, both side walls, the ceiling, the next room and any surface visible from the bridge.
Shulker shells: drops and edition differences
A defeated shulker can provide a shell, but the exact loot rule must be stated with the edition. Mojang’s general explanation describes the shell as the reward used for a shulker box. Bedrock’s technical loot documentation lists a shell count of 0–1 and supports Looting. A Minecraft Wiki entry reports a 50% shell-drop chance for Java Edition and a 0–1 range for Bedrock Edition. These statements should not be merged into one universal rate.

| Edition | Shell information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 50% shell-drop chance, as reported by the cited Minecraft Wiki entry | On that reported rule, an individual kill may produce no shell or one shell; the quoted figure is specifically for Java. |
| Bedrock Edition | 0–1 shell loot count in Microsoft’s Bedrock technical documentation; the cited Minecraft Wiki entry also reports 0–1 | The documented count allows zero or one shell. Do not restate it as Java’s 50% chance without an edition-specific source. |
Looting support is documented for the Bedrock loot table. The number you obtain in a real expedition still depends on how many shulkers you defeat and which edition and version you are running, so plan your box count conservatively.
Crafting and using a shulker box
Recipe
The recipe is simple: combine two shulker shells with one chest. The chest occupies the center slot and the shells go above and below it. The result is one shulker box.
Because each box consumes two shells, a single box requires two successful shell drops under the relevant edition’s rules. If your city run produces only one shell, you have not yet reached the recipe’s requirement.
What makes the box different from a chest
A shulker box is a movable chest whose inventory is preserved when the box is broken. You can place it, fill it, break it with its contents still inside and carry the packed storage to another location. This is particularly valuable during an End City expedition, when you may collect more loot than a normal inventory can hold.
The Bedrock Wiki describes 27 inventory slots. If every slot contains a full 64-item stack, that is up to 1,728 items inside one box. The capacity is a slot-and-stack calculation, not a promise that every item uses 64-item stacks; items with smaller stack limits occupy space differently.
Shulker boxes cannot be placed inside one another. They expand your carrying capacity through preserved inventories, but they do not create an unlimited nesting system.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Using shells for expedition logistics
- Collect shells during the city run. Keep them in a protected inventory slot or ordinary chest while you continue, because losing the expedition also loses the materials needed for storage.
- Return to a safe crafting point. Craft boxes after you have secured a route out of the city or reached a temporary base.
- Sort by purpose. Put building blocks, city loot, tools and spare supplies into separate boxes so unloading at home is faster.
- Break filled boxes for the return trip. The inventory remains with the box when it is broken, allowing one compact item to carry 27 slots of stored contents.
- Place and unload at base. Set the boxes down where you want permanent access; remember that another shulker box cannot be stored inside one of them.
This workflow is why shells are more than a trophy. Their practical value is concentrated in long-distance storage: a successful End City run can come home as a few packed boxes instead of a scattered inventory of individual stacks.
Java and Bedrock: what not to assume
Edition differences matter for both shell collection and farms. Treat Java and Bedrock as separate rule sets when planning an expedition, calculating how many cities you need or following a technical build.
| Comparison point | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Shell drop information | The cited Minecraft Wiki entry reports a 50% chance. | Microsoft’s Bedrock technical documentation lists a 0–1 loot count; the cited Minecraft Wiki entry reports the same range. |
| Looting | Do not infer a Bedrock loot-table rule from Java. | The Bedrock technical loot documentation shows Looting support. |
| Shulker duplication for farms | The cited tutorial describes the duplication mechanic as Java-only in versions 1.17–1.18. | The same tutorial says the mechanic is available on Bedrock from 1.19 onward. |
| Projectile and safety details | Use the documented grid-following bullet behavior, while checking current release notes for version-specific changes. | Use the same practical cover-and-shield approach, but verify the behavior in the exact Bedrock release you play. |
The farming dates above describe the versions identified by the cited tutorial, not a permanent promise for every later release. Before building a duplication-based farm, check the current Java or Bedrock version and its release notes. A design that works in Java 1.18 or Bedrock 1.19 may not behave identically after later technical changes.
Farm planning and version checks
A farm is a separate engineering problem from surviving one End City. First establish your edition and exact version; then confirm that the duplication mechanic your design relies on is present. Do not choose a tutorial solely because its title says “shulker farm.”
Questions to answer before building
- Am I playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition?
- What exact game version is running on the world or server?
- Does the design require the Java-only 1.17–1.18 behavior, the Bedrock availability described from 1.19 onward, or another version-specific mechanic?
- Does the tutorial specify how it handles teleporting shulkers, projectile safety and collection?
- What happens if an update changes duplication, spawning or transport behavior?
If any answer is unclear, use direct End City collection rather than committing resources to an unverified design. The available evidence establishes the edition and version split above, but it does not establish a universal shell yield for every farm.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The bullet followed me around the corner.”
Check whether the corner was actually solid and whether the projectile had another open grid path around it. A single thin opening or a second exposed face can leave a route. Add a full block between yourself and the corridor, then move farther from the original firing line.

“I blocked one shot but still floated away.”
A shield or weapon can destroy a bullet, but it does not undo levitation already applied by an earlier hit. Stop attacking, steer toward a solid landing area and watch for additional bullets. Rebuild your position after you are safely on the ground.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The shulker disappeared.”
Assume teleportation before assuming it was defeated. Search the nearby walls, ceiling and adjacent rooms, then check the route behind you. Keep your shield available while searching because the new position may be out of your original field of view.
“I killed several shulkers but cannot craft a box.”
Count shells rather than kills. Two shells are required for one box, and the edition-specific drop rule permits kills that produce no shell. Continue collecting or adjust your expected box count before leaving the city.
“My box will not go inside another box.”
That is intentional: shulker boxes cannot contain one another. Use separate boxes placed in the world or carry them as individual packed containers.
A practical checklist for every End City room
- Shield accessible.
- Ranged weapon loaded or ready.
- Solid blocks available for emergency cover.
- Nearest wall, ceiling, platform and drop edge identified.
- Retreat route visible.
- Bullet path interrupted as soon as a projectile appears.
- Movement aimed toward a platform if levitation starts.
- Nearby walls and ceiling rescanned after an apparent hit or disappearance.
- Edition and version confirmed before calculating shell yields or copying a farm design.
The core decision is simple: fight shulkers from geometry that protects you, not from the open edge of their city. Once shells are secured, turn them into boxes and use the preserved inventories to bring the End City’s loot home efficiently.
