1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a 20-player Java server, plan around a modern CPU with strong single-thread performance, an SSD, and roughly 16GB of RAM in the host. A practical starting allocation is 6–10GB to the server process, while reserving about 1–1.5GB for Java and the operating system. Vanilla play may run with less; heavy modpacks, many plugins, high simulation distance, entity farms and fast exploration can require considerably more. Bedrock Dedicated Server has a lower published baseline, but Mojang says larger worlds and more players need additional resources.

What a 20-player Minecraft server actually needs
“20 players” is only one part of the workload. A quiet survival world with players spread across already-generated terrain can use far fewer resources than 20 people exploring new chunks, running automated farms and loading several dimensions at once. The server must process world simulation, entity AI, redstone, block updates, chunk generation, network traffic and save operations continuously.

The following figures are planning ranges, not guarantees certified for every computer or world. Edition, Minecraft version, server software, view distance, simulation distance, entities and exploration style all affect the result.
| Workload | Suggested starting point | Main variables |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Java, 20 players, moderate exploration | 4–6GB server heap; 8–12GB total host RAM; modern 4-core CPU; SSD | View distance, chunk generation and entity farms |
| Paper with plugins, active redstone and 20 players | 6–10GB heap; about 16GB total host RAM; strong single-thread CPU; SSD | Plugin count, entities, simulation distance and concurrent exploration |
| Heavy modpack or multiple worlds | 8–12GB or more heap; more total RAM; faster CPU and storage | Modpack size, dimensions, pregeneration, automation and backups |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | Mojang baseline: i3-3210/A8-7600-equivalent CPU, 4GB RAM and 180MB–1GB storage | World size, add-ons, render and simulation settings, and concurrent activity |
The first three Java rows combine Paper’s current 6–10GB recommendation, its warning to reserve memory outside Xmx, and the workload controls exposed in server.properties. They should be treated as sensible starting budgets rather than promises of a fixed tick rate.

How much RAM should you allocate?
Leave memory outside the server heap
Paper documentation recommends at least 6–10GB for the server regardless of player count and notes that “Minecraft (and Java) needs additional memory on top of that Xmx parameter.” If a machine has 16GB physically installed, assigning all 16GB to -Xmx leaves no safe room for the operating system, Java’s native allocations, file cache or other services.
Paper’s Aikar’s Flags documentation estimates that about 1,000–1,500MB should be deducted from physical memory for Java and the operating system. In practice, keep still more headroom if the computer also runs a desktop, monitoring tools, voice chat, backups or other game servers.

- Vanilla Java: Begin at 4–6GB when the world is moderately active and the host has 8–12GB total RAM.
- Paper with plugins: Start at 6–10GB on a host with about 16GB total RAM. Plugin count and the work each plugin performs matter more than the label “plugin.”
- Large modpacks or several worlds: Budget 8–12GB or more, then add physical memory so the operating system still has room. Some modpacks have their own published requirements that supersede these ranges.
More heap is not automatically faster. An oversized Java heap can create longer garbage-collection pauses, while too little heap causes allocation pressure and crashes. Increase the allocation only after observing memory use during the busiest expected activity.
Use startup values that match the machine
Paper’s example command is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
Change both values to the budget selected for the workload, such as -Xms6G -Xmx6G for a 6GB starting heap. Keep the command’s Java version compatible with the Paper build and do not set Xmx equal to all installed RAM.
CPU: why single-thread performance matters
Minecraft’s main tick loop places significant work on one thread. A processor with strong per-core performance generally gives smoother ticks than an older chip with many slower cores. Extra cores still help with operating-system tasks, networking, chunk I/O and auxiliary threads, but core count alone does not predict performance.

- Learn your way around one block at atime in the new tutorial mode
- Craft all sorts of items from boats todiamond armor and create enormousstructures
- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
For a vanilla 20-player world, a modern four-core CPU is a reasonable starting point. Paper, plugins, heavy redstone, farms, many mobs and simultaneous exploration raise the demand on the main thread. A processor that looks adequate in a synthetic multi-core comparison can still struggle if its single-thread speed is low or if it is throttling under sustained load.
What causes CPU spikes
- New-chunk generation: Players moving in different directions force terrain generation and lighting work.
- Entities: Mob farms, item piles, villagers and minecarts add repeated AI and collision processing.
- Simulation distance: More loaded chunks continue ticking even when players are not looking directly at them.
- Plugins and mods: Protection scans, map rendering, automation and scripted events can run every tick.
If tick time rises during exploration but falls when players stay in established areas, the CPU or chunk-generation path is likely the constraint rather than RAM alone. Pregenerating a world before inviting players can shift that work away from peak play, although pregeneration itself needs CPU time and storage space.
Storage and world-file performance
Use an SSD for the operating system, server files, world regions, logs and backups. Region files are read and written continually, and an SSD reduces the pauses associated with chunk loading and saves compared with a mechanical drive. Storage capacity must cover the current world, future exploration, backups and any additional dimensions; a small initial world can grow rapidly as players travel.
Mojang’s Bedrock documentation publishes 180MB–1GB of storage for its baseline installation, but that figure is not a cap for a growing world. Java worlds, modpacks, logs and multiple backups can require substantially more. Keep backups on a different physical disk or machine so a failed drive does not destroy both the live world and its copies.
Java, Paper and version compatibility
Install a compatible Java runtime
The official Minecraft server page says Java Edition requires a compatible Java installation. Paper’s current compatibility table lists Java 21 for Minecraft versions 1.20 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for Paper 26.1 and newer. Check the exact Paper build’s table before launching; changing the server version can change the required Java runtime.

Do not assume that the Java version used by a client launcher is suitable for a server. Install the runtime on the host, verify it with java -version, and use the same major version required by the server software.
Vanilla versus Paper
Vanilla follows Mojang’s server behavior without Paper’s additional configuration and plugin ecosystem. Paper is a performance-oriented server implementation that supports plugins and exposes controls such as view distance, simulation distance and player caps. It is often a practical choice for a small community, but plugins can add their own CPU, memory and compatibility costs. Test each plugin against the exact Minecraft and Paper versions you plan to run.
Configure a 20-player Java server
- Install the server software and Java. Put the server JAR in its own directory, install the Java major version required by that JAR, and launch it once to create configuration files.
- Accept the EULA and relaunch. Edit
eula.txtonly after reading Mojang’s terms, set the required value, then start the server again. - Set the cap. In
server.properties, usemax-players=20. This limits simultaneous connections; it does not guarantee that 20 players will fit a particular workload. - Choose distances deliberately. Paper documents default
view-distance=10andsimulation-distance=10. Lower one or both if CPU or tick load is high, especially while players explore different areas. Raise them only after monitoring the busiest scenario. - Set a measured heap. Apply matching
-Xmsand-Xmxvalues in the startup command, keeping the 1,000–1,500MB host reserve and additional room for any other services. - Place worlds on SSD storage. Keep the live world, region files and logs on the SSD, and schedule backups to separate storage.
- Open the network path. Java servers commonly listen on port 25565. Allow the server through the host firewall and forward that port on the router when people connect from outside the local network. Use the correct protocol and avoid exposing unrelated administration ports.
- Test before opening publicly. Have several players explore, use farms and travel between dimensions while watching tick time, CPU, memory, disk activity and network errors. Size for the peak, not the quietest test.
Do you need a GPU?
A dedicated Minecraft server does not need the gaming GPU required by a player’s client. The server process is primarily CPU-, memory-, storage- and network-bound, and it can run headless with --nogui. An integrated graphics device is sufficient for administration through a local desktop, and a remote server can run without a display adapter suitable for 3D gaming.
Do not transfer Mojang’s Java client figures to server hardware. Mojang’s 2026 client guidance targets 1080p play: a minimum of 8GB RAM with a discrete GPU or 12GB with integrated graphics for 30 FPS on the Fast preset, and 16GB RAM for the recommended 1080p/60 FPS Fancy target. Those figures describe rendering the game on a player’s computer, not hosting the dedicated server.
Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements
Mojang describes the Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) as the official software for hosting a Bedrock Edition multiplayer world. Its published baseline is an Intel i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600-equivalent processor, 4GB RAM, 180MB–1GB storage, broadband internet, and a supported Windows or Ubuntu release.

- Multiplayer Up to four players can team up and fight together in co-op mode.
- Power Up Unlock dozens of unique items and weapon enchantments for devastating special attacks.
- Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
That baseline is a starting point for the dedicated software, not a promise that every 20-player world will perform identically. Mojang explicitly notes that larger worlds or more players need additional memory, storage and processing power. Add-ons, render distance, simulation distance, entity activity and simultaneous exploration all increase the budget.
Bedrock and Java players also use different server software and compatibility rules. Decide the edition first, then follow that edition’s version, operating-system and network requirements rather than mixing Java and Bedrock assumptions.

Possibly, if the workload is light and the machine’s main-thread performance, memory and storage are adequate. Age alone is not a useful specification. An older desktop with a relatively fast CPU, an SSD and 16GB RAM may outperform a newer low-power system with slow single-thread performance or a hard drive.
Check these points before committing an old machine
- CPU: Compare sustained single-thread performance, not only the number of cores. Check for thermal throttling under continuous load.
- RAM: Confirm total installed memory and leave the operating-system reserve outside
Xmx. - Drive: Move the world from a hard disk to an SSD if chunk loading or saves pause the server.
- Operating system: Verify that the required Java runtime and server build support the chosen operating system.
- Network: Check upload bandwidth, latency and whether the internet provider allows inbound connections or places you behind carrier-grade NAT.
- Reliability: Ensure the machine can run continuously, has cooling, automatic restart procedures and backups.
Start with conservative distances and a small test group. If the server remains responsive while all players explore and use the intended farms, expand gradually. If tick time remains high despite free RAM, a CPU or workload limit is more likely than a need for a larger heap.

A VPS avoids home power and router management, yet its advertised RAM may be shared or oversubscribed. Compare the CPU’s single-thread performance, whether storage is SSD-backed, the actual RAM available after the provider’s overhead, network location and backup policy. Two VPS plans with the same memory can behave very differently if one has slower shared CPU time.
Recommended Free Tools
Managed hosting can handle Java installation, firewall rules, port access, backups and server-file operations. Before choosing it, confirm that the plan supplies enough dedicated or guaranteed resources, supports your Minecraft edition and version, permits the required plugins or mods, and provides snapshots or downloadable backups. Geographic location affects latency for every player.
For any option, evaluate these seven items: usable RAM after overhead, single-thread CPU performance, SSD I/O, backup and snapshot policy, Java-version control, network and port support, and whether resources are shared with other tenants.
Tuning and troubleshooting under load
Players see lag while CPU is high
Lower simulation-distance first, then consider reducing view-distance. Inspect entity-heavy areas, redstone clocks, villagers, item piles and plugins that scan large regions. If lag appears mainly during new exploration, pregenerate important terrain or upgrade to a faster single-thread CPU.
The process runs out of memory
Check the heap limit and the host’s remaining memory rather than immediately assigning all available RAM. A modpack may genuinely need a larger heap, but leave room for Java native memory and the operating system. Remove unnecessary plugins, reduce simultaneous worlds and verify that backups or map tools are not creating unexpected temporary usage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Chunk saves or backups freeze play
Confirm that the world is on an SSD with free capacity, schedule backups away from peak activity and copy them to separate storage. A nearly full drive or a slow external destination can stall saves even when CPU usage is low.
Outside players cannot connect
Verify that the server is listening on the expected port, the host firewall allows it, the router forwards it to the correct private address and the server is bound to the intended interface. Test from a different network; a connection that works inside the home LAN does not prove that internet routing is configured.
A practical sizing decision
Choose the edition and server software first. For vanilla Java, begin with the 4–6GB heap and 8–12GB host range if activity is moderate. For Paper with plugins, use the 6–10GB heap and approximately 16GB total host range. For heavy mods or multiple worlds, plan for 8–12GB or more and increase physical memory, CPU and storage together. Use an SSD in every case, reserve memory outside Xmx, and validate the setup with a full-load test before inviting all 20 players.
