A Minecraft server that hangs on “Loading,” times out, or shows “Unable to connect” is usually failing at one of four points: the Java/Bedrock version handshake, the server process starting, Minecraft’s authentication services, or the network path between player and host. Identify the edition and exact error first, then check service availability, versions, the server console, address and port, and finally firewalls, VPNs and DNS. That order separates a broken server from a connection that never reaches it.

What a “not loading” server problem actually means
The loading screen is not a single operation. Minecraft must match the client to a compatible server, contact the server process, complete account and authentication checks where required, and maintain a route over the local network or internet. A failure in any layer can look like the same frozen screen.

Do not change several settings at once. Each test should answer one question: is the server running, is the client compatible, and can traffic reach the correct machine and port?
Start with a five-minute triage
- Identify the edition. Ask whether the player is using Minecraft: Java Edition or Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. They use different server software, protocols and default ports.
- Identify the host type. Is it a public server, a friend’s hosted world, a Realm, a Java self-hosted server, or a Bedrock Dedicated Server? The host requirements differ.
- Record the exact message. “Timed out,” “connection refused,” “outdated client/server,” “unable to connect to world,” and a permanently spinning loading screen point to different tests.
- Confirm availability. Make sure the host computer is powered on and the server process is running. For a hosted world, the host generally has to be in the world; Realms are an exception because the owner does not need to remain online.
- Check the release. Every participant should use the current release rather than a snapshot or preview unless the server is deliberately running that build. The client and server must belong to a compatible release family.
- Check service status where relevant. Minecraft Help recommends checking Realms and Xbox/PlayFab status for the services involved, and ensuring the game is updated.
If the host cannot see the server become ready in its console, start with the host rather than repeatedly retrying from the client. If the host sees a ready server but only remote players fail, move to address, port and firewall checks.

Java and Bedrock must match the server
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are separate ecosystems. A Java client cannot join a normal Bedrock server, and a Bedrock client cannot join a normal Java server unless a separately configured compatibility solution is involved. Do not treat an edition mismatch as a temporary network outage.

Bedrock’s official error guidance maps Chain to a server or player using a different version and recommends updating. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation also notes that minor-version changes such as 1.21.0 versus 1.20.0 are incompatible; being on the same major series is not enough. Breeze indicates that the world is newer than the client, so update the client or use a world release it can read.
Fix an outdated-client or outdated-server message
- Write down the exact version shown on the client and in the server console or hosting panel.
- Update the side named by the message. If the server is intentionally held on an older release, install that exact client release instead of updating only one participant.
- Exit preview, beta or snapshot builds unless the server is running the same build family.
- Restart both the game and server after updating, then test again with one player before inviting others.
When a Java server never reaches a ready state
A Java server that stays in the console, exits immediately, or never reports that it is ready has a host-side startup problem. Read the console before editing random network settings.

Verify Java and the server directory
- Install a Java runtime compatible with the Minecraft server release. There is no single Java build that is guaranteed for every Minecraft release, so follow the requirement for the particular server version.
- Open a terminal in the directory containing the server JAR. Launching a JAR from another directory can make it miss configuration files and world data.
- Confirm that the intended Java executable is callable by running the Java version command supplied by your operating system, then launch the server with the JAR you downloaded. A typical command is
java -jar server.jar nogui; use the actual filename shown in your server directory.
Accept the EULA and rerun
On its first run, the server creates files and may stop with messages such as failed-to-load-properties or failed-to-load-eula. This is expected until the files are configured. Open eula.txt, change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree to Minecraft’s EULA, save the file, and run the JAR again. Do not delete the file or repeatedly launch the server without making that change.
Use the console as the decision point
- If the console reaches its ready message, the process is running; continue with address, port and firewall checks.
- If it reports a missing Java command, correct the Java installation or PATH and retry.
- If it reports a missing or unreadable properties file, keep the JAR and configuration in the same server directory and check file permissions.
- If it stops on a world, mod or plugin error, fix that specific console error before testing internet access. A network change cannot repair a process that has already crashed.
Bedrock Dedicated Server startup and firewall requirements
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses the ports configured in server.properties. Microsoft’s documentation states that when the firewall is enabled, you must allow both server-port and server-portv6 through it. The documented defaults are 19132 and 19133.
- Open
server.propertiesand note the actual values ofserver-portandserver-portv6; do not assume the defaults if they were changed. - Allow the Bedrock server executable to receive traffic on those ports in the host firewall, using the network profile that applies to the connection.
- Start the dedicated server and keep its console open while testing.
- Connect locally first, then from another device on the same network, and only then from outside the network. The first failing test identifies the boundary to investigate.
Use the right address for the player’s network
The same server can have several addresses, and choosing the wrong one produces a timeout even when the process is healthy.

Java port forwarding
Minecraft Help says to forward the port listed in server.properties as query.port; the default cited by that guide is 25565. In the router, forward that external port to the server computer’s private LAN address and the same internal port unless your configuration deliberately uses different values. Also allow the server through the host firewall.
Reserve the server computer’s private address in the router if possible. Otherwise, a DHCP change can send the forwarding rule to the wrong device after a restart. The official setup guidance establishes the need for forwarding and firewall access, but it does not guarantee that every router or ISP handles inbound connections in the same way.
Why localhost works but friends still cannot join
A successful localhost test proves that the server process is responding on the host. It does not prove that a packet can cross the home router. Focus on the public address, the forwarded port, the firewall’s private/public profile, carrier-grade NAT, or ISP filtering. Neither the Minecraft nor Microsoft setup guides diagnose a particular ISP or router, so confirm those conditions with the network administrator or provider when the forwarding rule appears correct.

Remove local blockers without weakening security permanently
When ordinary websites work, Minecraft traffic can still be blocked or delayed by controls that inspect game traffic or alter name resolution.
Firewall and antivirus
- Check that the Java runtime or Bedrock Dedicated Server executable is allowed on the correct private or public network profile.
- Review inbound rules for the exact configured port, not only a rule for a different earlier server installation.
- If antivirus software has network inspection, pause that inspection briefly for a controlled test, then restore it and create a narrow allow rule if it is the cause.
VPN and custom DNS
Disconnect a VPN temporarily and retry. A VPN can send the connection through a route where the server address or port is unreachable. Minecraft’s support guidance also warns that custom DNS and open-port configurations can conflict with multiplayer even when other websites or games connect normally. Return to the automatic DNS supplied by the network for a test, record the result, and restore a trusted configuration afterward if DNS was not the cause.
Test one change at a time
- Disconnect the VPN and retry.
- Check the firewall rule and retry.
- Test with automatic DNS and retry.
- Re-enable each protection after the test and keep only the specific exception required.
Do not leave a firewall disabled or a VPN disconnected as a permanent “fix.” The goal is to identify the blocking layer while preserving the strongest protection that still permits the server.

Managed hosting can remove some home-network work, but the exact player limits, mod support, pricing and service status depend on the selected provider. Those details are not universal Minecraft specifications.
A reliable isolation sequence
Use this sequence when the first checks do not identify the fault. Stop at the first failed test rather than changing every setting.
- Host-process test: On the host, connect with
localhost. Failure here means the server process, Java/runtime, configuration or local firewall is still wrong. - LAN test: From a second device on the same network, connect to the host’s private address. Failure here points to the host firewall, the wrong private address, an edition/version mismatch or local network isolation.
- External test: From outside the home network, use the public address and configured port. Failure only here points to router forwarding, a public firewall profile, carrier-grade NAT or ISP filtering.
- Second-account test: Have another compatible player try after the host has confirmed the server is ready. If only one account fails, inspect that player’s edition, release, permissions, sign-in state, VPN and DNS.
- Service test: If multiple compatible players fail during authentication, check Minecraft, Realms and Xbox/PlayFab status where applicable before changing the server.
When the evidence does not support a universal fix
There is no one Java runtime build guaranteed for every Minecraft release, no permanent global outage conclusion that applies to every date, and no router or ISP setting that works for all homes. The decisive evidence is the exact edition and release, the server console, the operating system, the network topology and the current service status.
- Capture the full console error, not only the last line.
- Record the client edition and version for every affected player.
- Write down whether localhost, LAN and external tests pass or fail.
- Note the configured port, the host’s private address and whether the public address changes.
- Restore firewall, DNS and VPN protections after each controlled test.
Once the server process reaches its ready state, the client and server editions and releases match, and the correct address and port pass the appropriate network test, the loading hang has been reduced to a specific layer instead of treated as a mystery.
