Ocean monuments are rare structures in Minecraft’s deep ocean biomes, packed with prismarine, sea lanterns, gold and sponges—but guarded by ranged attackers and three elder guardians that can make every block take dramatically longer to break. The safest clear is to locate the monument with an ocean explorer map, arrive with breathing and healing supplies, kill the three elders before attempting serious mining, and then choose between quick looting, draining the structure or building a guardian farm.

This guide covers locating a monument, preparing for both Java and Bedrock Edition, navigating the interior, handling Mining Fatigue III, collecting every major reward and deciding what to do with the site afterward.

What an ocean monument is—and why it matters

An ocean monument is a large underwater structure that generates in deep ocean biomes. It was added in Minecraft’s Bountiful Update in September 2014. Monuments are valuable because they combine several otherwise difficult-to-source materials in one location: prismarine blocks, sea lanterns, gold blocks, sponges and guardian drops. A monument also provides the only natural location where guardians spawn, making it the starting point for a renewable prismarine, fish and experience farm.

The structure is not safe to treat like an ordinary ruin. Guardians can attack from a distance with a laser and damage close attackers with their spikes when those spikes are extended. Three elder guardians protect every monument. Each elder has 80 health points and applies Mining Fatigue III in a 50-block radius. In Java Edition, the effect is checked roughly every 60 seconds, so mining can suddenly become slow again after you clear it.

Your first objective is therefore not the gold core or a sponge room. It is finding and killing all three elders. Once the elders are gone and the remaining effect has expired, the monument becomes much easier to mine, drain or remodel.

How to find an ocean monument

Use an ocean explorer map

The practical, intended method is to buy an ocean explorer map from a cartographer. The map points toward a monument and is considerably more reliable than searching ocean after ocean by boat. Cartographer trades vary with progression and availability, so bring enough emeralds and paper to complete the trade when it appears.

Travel prepared for a long ocean crossing

Bring a boat even though the final approach is underwater. It lets you cover distance quickly, carry a chest’s worth of supplies and return with heavy blocks and loot. Mark your departure point or record coordinates before leaving; a monument can be difficult to relocate once you have surfaced far from shore.

Monuments generate in deep ocean biomes, not in every ocean. If the map leads you to a large body of water that lacks sufficient depth, continue following the map rather than assuming the structure failed to generate.

Preparation checklist

Pack for combat, underwater time and a recovery plan. The following setup is suitable for a first clear; improve the enchantments and quantities if you intend to drain the entire structure.

Bring Why it matters Practical guidance
Water-breathing potions Prevent drowning while fighting and navigating. Carry more than one for the approach, elder fights and retreat. Keep one in a hotbar slot.
Food Restores hunger and allows natural health regeneration. Use a high-saturation food and carry an emergency reserve.
Strong armor Reduces laser and melee damage. Durability matters because guardian attacks continue while you search maze-like rooms.
Weapons Kill guardians and elders quickly. Use your best dependable melee weapon; a bow can help when you have a clear line of sight.
Building blocks Create cover, seal corridors and make temporary bases. Choose blocks that are easy to place underwater and bring several stacks for a full clear.
Doors or other air-pocket blocks Provide local breathing spaces while you regroup. Place them in a protected corner rather than in an exposed central room.
Milk buckets (Java priority) Remove Mining Fatigue III temporarily. Bring several buckets if you plan to mine before all elders are dead.
Turtle shell Extends underwater operating time. It is useful when potions run out or for a long exterior search.
Conduit Provides a strong long-term underwater upgrade. Use it when you can establish the required frame safely; it is an upgrade, not a substitute for initial supplies.
Spare pickaxe and tools Prevents a broken tool from trapping you underwater. Match the tool to the block you are mining, especially in Bedrock Edition.

A bed, chest and crafting table on a nearby shore or temporary platform give you a recovery point. Do not carry every irreplaceable item into the first attempt; an elder or a lost route can turn a small mistake into a complete inventory loss.

Guardian and elder guardian threats

Regular guardians

A guardian charges a laser before firing at a target. Its spikes extend during close combat, damaging attackers that strike it. Fighting from a position with a wall, corner or placed block between you and other guardians reduces the number of simultaneous attacks. Open-water combat is usually worse than forcing guardians into a narrow, controlled route.

Elder guardians

There are exactly three elder guardians in each monument: one in the upper area and one in each side wing. They have 80 health points and apply Mining Fatigue III within a 50-block radius. The effect can reach you before you see the elder, which is why mining through the exterior wall is a poor opening plan.

In Java Edition, the tutorial description places the elder’s check at approximately 60-second intervals. A milk bucket can clear the effect, but it returns when the next check occurs while an elder remains alive. Treat milk as a temporary window for movement or a specific task, not as a permanent solution.

Choose an entry strategy

Direct entrance with cover

Enter through an opening, immediately place blocks to create cover and establish a route back to the surface. This is the simplest approach when you have strong armor, water-breathing support and enough blocks to seal sight lines. Advance room by room instead of swimming through open corridors while several guardians can target you.

Roof or top-down entry

A top entry can shorten the path to the upper elder and avoids some exterior guardian fire. It requires enough blocks to reach and breach the roof safely, plus a way to retreat if Mining Fatigue prevents you from breaking the blocks quickly. Once inside, seal the opening behind you so guardians cannot attack from every direction.

Conduit-supported entry

A conduit makes extended underwater work easier after you have a safe area for its frame. It is particularly useful for draining and construction, but setting one up while the monument is active can expose you to attacks. For a first raid, potions, a turtle shell and temporary air pockets are usually the lower-risk starting plan.

A reliable monument-clearing route

  1. Locate and stage outside. Surface near the map marker, place a chest or platform in a safe location, and store nonessential valuables. Keep your combat kit, food, blocks and breathing supplies with you.
  2. Approach under cover. Swim or descend behind placed blocks whenever possible. Avoid hovering in open water where several guardians can maintain line of sight.
  3. Find the upper elder first when practical. The upper guardian is often the most direct first target. Break or place blocks to create a short protected lane, then attack from cover.
  4. Kill the first elder and mark the route. Collect its drops, place distinctive blocks at turns and note dead ends. Monument interiors are easy to re-enter incorrectly, especially after retreating for air.
  5. Clear the two wing elders. Move through one side wing at a time. Seal a cleared room or corridor as a temporary base with doors or blocks, then return to that point if your health or air supply falls.
  6. Confirm all three are dead. If Mining Fatigue continues, an elder is still alive or the most recent effect has not yet expired. Search the upper area and both wings before starting a large mining project.
  7. Wait out or remove the remaining effect. Java players can use milk for a temporary clear. Bedrock players should generally avoid trying to mine through the effect; move to a protected position and use the correct tool instead.
  8. Loot methodically. Take the gold core, inspect for sponge rooms, and collect prismarine and sea lantern material only after the combat threat is under control.

Mining Fatigue III: Java versus Bedrock

Edition What milk does Best practical response
Java Edition Clears Mining Fatigue temporarily. The effect can return on the elder’s recurring check, described as roughly every 60 seconds. Use milk for a planned mining or escape window, repeat only when necessary, and prioritize killing the elders so the source stops.
Bedrock Edition The tutorial guidance reports that milk removes the effect for no more than about one second, making repeated drinking impractical. Use the correct tool for each block, apply efficiency enchantments where available, mine from protected positions and build routes that avoid exposing yourself to multiple guardians.

In either edition, do not confuse a cleared status effect with a safe monument. Regular guardians continue attacking, and an uncleared elder can reapply the debuff. Cover, route marking and short trips to an air pocket remain useful after drinking milk.

What loot is inside?

The headline reward is the monument’s central gold core: eight gold blocks. You can also harvest large amounts of prismarine and sea lantern material, find occasional sponge rooms and receive drops from the elders and regular guardians. The tide armor trim is another notable reward associated with monument exploration.

Reward How it is obtained Why it is useful
Eight gold blocks Mine the monument’s gold core after reaching the central area. High-value storage, crafting and decorative gold supply.
Prismarine blocks and variants Mine the monument itself. Distinctive building palette and a renewable-farm target.
Sea lanterns Mine them from the structure; Silk Touch is useful for collecting them intact. Bright lighting for builds without placing ordinary torches.
Sponges Find a sponge room when one generates, and collect one from each elder. Remove water from rooms, tunnels and large construction sites.
Guardian drops Kill regular and elder guardians. Prismarine shards, prismarine crystals, fish and experience.
Tide armor trim Obtain it while exploring the monument. Cosmetic armor customization for players collecting trims.

Silk Touch is especially valuable if your goal is to preserve sea lanterns as blocks rather than receive their component drops. Bring storage or make return trips; prismarine and lantern materials fill inventories faster than a first-time raider often expects.

Using sponges effectively

Sponges remove water in a limited area, so draining a monument is a process of placing, retrieving and drying them rather than dropping one item and watching the whole structure empty. Use temporary walls or section off rooms so each sponge placement affects a manageable volume.

Wet sponges can be dried in a furnace with fuel. A Nether portal is another drying route when you are operating at scale and can move safely between dimensions. Keep a dry reserve in a chest near the work area; using the last dry sponge far from an exit can leave you unable to continue the drain.

What to do after the elders are dead

Quick loot run

For a short expedition, take the eight gold blocks, sponges, sea lanterns and a representative amount of prismarine, then leave. This minimizes construction time and avoids turning a combat victory into a multi-hour underwater project.

Strip the monument for building materials

With Mining Fatigue no longer active, remove prismarine and sea lanterns systematically. Use marked lanes and temporary chests so you do not repeatedly swim to the surface. Silk Touch-equipped tools preserve sea lantern blocks intact.

Drain and convert it into a base

Divide the structure into sections with temporary walls, remove water with sponges, dry those sponges and repeat. Once dry, the monument can become an underwater base, storage complex, workshop or beacon project. Leave exterior access points marked until all rooms are finished; a sealed entrance is easy to lose beneath a drained shell.

Build a guardian farm

Guardians spawn only in ocean monuments, so the cleared structure is the natural site for a guardian farm. Farming tutorials describe guardian output as prismarine shards, prismarine crystals, fish and experience. A fully optimized farm is reported at approximately 180,000 experience points per hour; that figure applies to a fully optimized design, not to every simple platform or partially drained monument.

Farm construction is a separate engineering project. You must control spawn spaces, move guardians into a collection and kill area, provide player safety and handle item storage. Clearing the elders first makes construction and maintenance far less frustrating, even when your design does not require draining every block.

Common problems and fixes

“I cannot find the monument.”

Confirm that you are following an ocean explorer map rather than a different structure map, and continue toward the marker through deep ocean terrain. Travel by boat on the surface, then descend only when you are close enough to reduce time spent underwater.

“Mining is still impossibly slow.”

Assume an elder remains alive until you have checked the upper section and both wings. In Java, milk can create a temporary window; in Bedrock, do not rely on milk because the effect may disappear for only about one second. Use the correct tool, efficiency enchantments where available and protected mining positions.

“I keep dying before reaching an elder.”

Reduce exposed swimming. Place blocks to break lines of sight, create a door or enclosed air pocket, retreat to a marked base and approach one corridor at a time. Carry stronger armor, food and additional water-breathing support on the next attempt rather than trying to recover a lost route with minimal supplies.

“I got lost inside.”

Mark every junction with a consistent block, seal explored dead ends and keep one route open to the surface. A temporary base with doors, a chest and spare supplies turns navigation into a series of short trips instead of one continuous dive.

“Draining is taking too long.”

Work in sections, not the whole monument at once. Build temporary partitions, place sponges in the smallest practical volume, dry them in a furnace or through a Nether portal and repeat. Keep dry sponges in reserve and do not dismantle your access route until the section is complete.

A practical decision guide

Your goal Best approach
Get the rare rewards and leave Use an explorer map, raid with potions and cover, kill all three elders, then take the gold, sponges, lanterns and trim.
Collect building materials Clear the elders first, then mine with spare tools; use Silk Touch for sea lanterns.
Create a dry underwater base Establish a conduit or secure air pockets, partition the monument and drain it with a sponge rotation.
Generate prismarine and experience long-term Use the cleared monument as the site for a guardian farm and design the collection system around prismarine, fish and experience output.
Play Bedrock with minimal risk Prioritize correct tools, efficiency enchantments, cover and short protected routes instead of planning around milk.

The monument’s difficulty is front-loaded: the three elders and their Mining Fatigue effect make the first entry dangerous. Once those guardians are dead, you can choose the pace and purpose of the rest of the project—quick loot, material harvesting, a drained base or a long-term guardian farm.
