If you have mycelium, you can farm outdoors in daylight because mycelium allows mushroom growth at any light level. Without bone meal, a small-mushroom spread farm works, but its 4% random-tick spread attempt is slow and requires careful light and mob control. For renewable meals, transport mooshrooms from a Mushroom Fields biome: a bowl produces mushroom stew repeatedly, and a brown mooshroom can produce flower-linked suspicious stew.

What Mushroom Fields are and why the biome matters
Mushroom Fields is a rare ocean-island biome. Its surface is covered in mycelium rather than grass, and red mushrooms, brown mushrooms, huge mushrooms and mooshrooms occur there. Mojang describes the visual clue plainly: “You’ll recognise a mushroom fields biome instantly when you come across it – there’s no grass at all.” The biome is also the natural home of mooshrooms; Mojang’s Help material calls it “the only home of mooshrooms.”
Mycelium is the biome’s most useful resource for a farm. Mushrooms planted on ordinary dirt and similar blocks need low light, but mycelium permits mushroom growth at any light level. That means a mycelium plot can sit in the open without a roof or a dark room, while a dirt-based farm must be kept dim. Bring mycelium home with a tool that can collect the block intact, or establish your first farm in the biome and expand from there.

How to find a Mushroom Fields biome
Search the right terrain
Mushroom Fields usually forms as an island surrounded by ocean, so ocean travel is the practical approach. Equip a boat, food, spare tools and enough inventory space for mycelium and mushrooms. From the water, look for an island with an unmistakable purple-gray surface and no grass. A normal island with grass, trees or ordinary dirt is not Mushroom Fields, even if a few mushrooms happen to be present.
Confirm the biome before building
Walk onto the island and check the ground. The combination of mycelium, naturally occurring mushrooms and mooshrooms confirms the biome. Because the biome is rare, avoid stripping it immediately: collect a starter amount of mycelium and mushrooms, then leave a safe route back to the shore. You can move the resources to a permanent base and keep the island as a mooshroom source.
Plan transportation before collecting mooshrooms
Mooshrooms are valuable because they turn a bowl into a repeatable meal and can supply milk with a bucket. Moving them over a long ocean route is much easier if you prepare a fenced pen at home, a boat route and wheat for breeding. Transport at least two animals when possible; breeding then gives you a self-sustaining herd instead of a single irreplaceable animal.
Choose a mushroom-farming method
Your best design depends on four decisions: whether bone meal is available, how much space and vertical clearance you have, how much time you can wait, and whether the goal is food, building blocks or suspicious-stew ingredients.
| Method | Startup resources | Output and speed | Main constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Huge-mushroom farm | One red or brown mushroom, suitable substrate and bone meal | Fast burst harvest; one huge mushroom can yield at least 20 mushrooms | Needs open growth clearance and a continuing bone-meal supply |
| Small-mushroom spread farm | Several starter mushrooms and a valid low-light area | Gradual renewable supply without spending bone meal on every harvest | Spread attempts occur on random ticks with a 4% chance; light and mob control are demanding |
| Mycelium outdoor plot | Mycelium and starter mushrooms | Simple daylight farming; can use either natural spread or bone meal for huge mushrooms | Mycelium must first be obtained from Mushroom Fields or another source |
| Mooshroom pen | Two transported mooshrooms, wheat, bowls and optionally buckets | Repeatable stew and milk; breeding increases herd size | Requires finding and safely transporting animals from Mushroom Fields |
Method 1: grow huge mushrooms for bulk harvests
What you need
- One red or brown mushroom.
- Bone meal.
- A valid planting block, such as dirt or grass; podzol, mycelium and nylium also support outdoor growth.
- A clear area above and around the planting point.
- Tools and storage for the resulting mushrooms and blocks.
Step-by-step procedure
- Prepare the site. Clear leaves, ceilings and nearby structures. Leave enough vertical and horizontal room for the selected huge-mushroom shape; a cramped roof is the most common reason bone meal appears to do nothing.
- Place the substrate. Put dirt, grass, podzol, mycelium or nylium at the planting location. Mycelium is the easiest choice for an outdoor farm because daylight does not prevent growth.
- Plant the mushroom. Place either a red or brown mushroom on the prepared block.
- Apply bone meal. Use bone meal on the small mushroom. If the location and clearance are valid, it grows into a huge mushroom.
- Harvest the structure. Break the cap and stem, collecting mushrooms and the decorative blocks. A huge mushroom yields at least 20 mushrooms when harvested, making this the fastest way to turn bone meal into a large reserve.
- Replant. Keep a few small mushrooms for the next cycle instead of consuming the entire harvest. Repeat as long as you can supply bone meal.
Why this is the best emergency supply
Huge mushrooms convert one starter mushroom and bone meal into a concentrated harvest, so they are ideal when you need ingredients for a large food stockpile or a building project immediately. The trade-off is resource consumption: every accelerated growth cycle depends on bone meal, and the structure needs more clearance than a single small mushroom. Build the plot away from low ceilings, tree canopies and neighboring huge mushrooms that could block the next growth attempt.

Harvesting for construction
Huge mushrooms produce red or brown mushroom blocks and stems as well as loose mushrooms. Those blocks are useful for organic walls, roofs, columns and interior decoration. Use the appropriate harvesting tool or enchantment when you want to maximize block collection rather than simply clear the structure for food ingredients. Decide before harvesting: a fast, unselective break is convenient for food, while a block-focused harvest preserves more of the decorative material.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMethod 2: build a small-mushroom spread farm
Understand the slow growth rule
Small mushrooms do not grow like wheat or carrots. They attempt to spread on random ticks, and the Minecraft Wiki tutorial documents a 4% chance for a spread attempt. Nearby mushroom counts and the validity of the destination can prevent that attempt from creating a new mushroom, so a farm can appear idle for a long time even when it is working normally.
Ordinary small-mushroom growth requires a light level below 13. Mycelium, podzol and nylium are exceptions, allowing mushrooms to grow in brighter surroundings. This is why a mycelium plot is both easier to build and safer to operate than a dark dirt room.
Build an outdoor mycelium spread plot
- Lay a platform of mycelium, leaving walking space around the planting squares.
- Place red and brown mushrooms with enough separation that the nearby-count rule does not stop new placements.
- Keep the area clear of blocks that would make a destination invalid.
- Collect excess mushrooms periodically and replant the desired ratio of red to brown varieties.
- Add a roof or walls only if you need to protect the area; mycelium itself does not require darkness.
This design is the least complicated long-term farm when you already have mycelium. It uses no bone meal for ordinary spread, but production is deliberately slow. Make the platform larger rather than expecting one crowded patch to multiply quickly.
Build an indoor low-light farm
A dirt-based indoor farm must stay below light level 13 for ordinary growth. Total darkness creates a hostile-mob problem, so the room needs a deliberate compromise between mushroom-friendly darkness and player safety. The tutorial documents several practical arrangements:

- Soul torches: use their lower light output to illuminate routes while preserving darker planting areas.
- Recessed torches: place light sources in walls, corners or protected channels so the floor remains dim enough for mushrooms.
- One-block-high layouts: use a low ceiling to restrict the space available to hostile mobs while retaining a mushroom-growing floor.
Separate the entrance, lighting and planting zones. If mobs still appear, increase controlled lighting in walkways, lower the ceiling where appropriate and remove unused dark pockets. If mushrooms refuse to spread, check that the floor is below the required light threshold, that nearby mushrooms are not over-concentrated and that each destination is a valid block.
Method 3: use mooshrooms as a renewable food station
Find, breed and pen them
Mooshrooms spawn in Mushroom Fields and can be bred with wheat. Once you have transported two animals, place them in a fenced, lit pen with room to move and a gate that prevents escapes. Breed the pair with wheat to expand the herd. A pen near your storage and crop area turns mushroom collection into a routine food stop rather than an expedition.
Collect mushroom stew
- Hold an empty bowl.
- Use the bowl on a mooshroom.
- Receive mushroom stew without killing or shearing the animal.
- Repeat whenever you need another serving.
Mojang explains that bowl-use on a mooshroom gives mushroom stew repeatedly. A bucket instead produces milk, so keep both bowls and buckets available if the pen serves multiple purposes. Shearing a mooshroom removes its mushrooms and converts it into a normal cow; do this only when you intentionally want a regular cow, because the mooshroom-specific stew ability is lost.
Create a brown mooshroom
Strike a red mooshroom with lightning to convert it into a brown mooshroom. This is a risky operation: protect the pen and the player, and do not expose the herd unnecessarily. Brown mooshrooms retain the ordinary bowl-for-stew and bucket-for-milk interactions, while adding suspicious-stew production.
Mushroom stew: ingredients, nutrition and trade-offs
Crafting recipe
Craft mushroom stew with one red mushroom, one brown mushroom and one bowl. The combination means a farm that produces only one color cannot sustain crafting indefinitely; maintain both varieties or use a mooshroom pen for direct servings.

Food value
The food tutorial records mushroom stew at 7.2 saturation. That makes it a reliable meal when mushrooms are plentiful, especially near a Mushroom Fields base or mooshroom pen. The practical drawback is inventory management: mushroom stew does not stack, so carrying a large supply occupies many inventory slots. For long journeys, weigh the high food value against the space used by individual bowls of stew.
When to choose stew over raw ingredients
- Choose crafted stew when you have both mushroom colors and need dependable hunger restoration.
- Use a mooshroom pen when you want servings on demand without repeatedly crafting from stored ingredients.
- Keep loose mushrooms when you are saving space for another project, planning huge-mushroom growth or making suspicious stew.
Suspicious stew and flower-linked effects
Crafting route
Suspicious stew combines red and brown mushrooms, a bowl and a flower. The flower determines the resulting status effect, so the effect is selected by the flower ingredient rather than by the mushroom color. A flower garden beside your mushroom plot lets you produce the effect you want instead of searching for flowers each time.
Brown-mooshroom route
- Maintain a brown mooshroom in a secure pen.
- Feed it the flower associated with the effect you want.
- Use a bowl on the flower-fed animal to obtain suspicious stew.
- Repeat the feeding and milking process for additional servings.
This arrangement is useful for a dedicated effect-production station, but it requires more management than ordinary stew. Label flower plots and storage, because substituting a different flower changes the effect. Keep ordinary red mooshrooms in a separate pen if you do not want accidental lightning conversion or mixing of animals.

Use mycelium as a surface block
Mycelium has a distinctive purple-gray appearance and immediately identifies a Mushroom Fields theme. Use it for paths, island landscaping, garden floors or a dedicated mushroom courtyard. Its functional advantage remains the same after relocation: mushrooms can grow on it at any light level, so decorative landscaping can also be productive farmland.
Use huge-mushroom blocks
Red and brown cap blocks and stems create a natural palette for oversized cabins, fantasy roofs, columns and interior accents. Grow huge mushrooms in a controlled clearing, harvest the blocks you need, then reserve a separate plot for food production so construction demand does not consume every mushroom.

Troubleshooting: why a mushroom farm fails
The mushroom will not grow with bone meal
- Check that the planting block is valid: dirt, grass, podzol, mycelium or nylium are suitable examples.
- Clear the vertical and horizontal area above the mushroom; leaves, ceilings and nearby structures can block the huge form.
- Confirm that the mushroom is actually selected when bone meal is applied.
- Move the planting point away from neighboring structures and try again in a larger clearing.
Small mushrooms never spread
- On ordinary substrates, measure the lighting problem first: the level must be below 13.
- Switch to mycelium, podzol or nylium if you want a brighter farm.
- Reduce overcrowding and leave valid empty destinations around the starter mushrooms.
- Accept that the documented spread attempt is only 4% per random tick; slow output is normal, not proof that the farm is broken.
Hostile mobs appear in the indoor room
Do not solve the mob problem by flooding the whole floor with light if the floor must remain below the mushroom threshold. Instead, concentrate light in corridors and corners, use recessed or soul torches, and consider a one-block-high design. Remove unused dark pockets and provide a safe path from the entrance to the harvest area.

|---|---|---|
| Immediate bulk mushrooms | Huge-mushroom plot on mycelium or another valid substrate | Bone meal produces a fast harvest, with at least 20 mushrooms possible from one huge structure. |
| Low-maintenance daylight farming | Outdoor mycelium spread plot | Mycelium removes the normal light restriction and avoids a dark indoor room. |
| No bone-meal budget | Small-mushroom spread farm | It uses random-tick spread instead of accelerating every plant, but output is slow. |
| Reliable prepared food | Mooshroom pen | A bowl on a mooshroom repeatedly provides mushroom stew, and wheat expands the herd. |
| Status-effect meals | Brown mooshroom plus flower garden | Feeding flowers enables repeatable suspicious stew with the flower-selected effect. |
| Decorative construction | Dedicated huge-mushroom block farm | Large mushrooms supply cap blocks, stems and loose mushrooms in one harvest. |
Version note: Shelf Mushroom snapshot content
Mojang’s Java 26.3 Snapshot 1 lists Shelf Mushroom as testing content, including bone-meal growth, stew use and wandering-trader availability. Treat those details as snapshot-only until the release notes for your target edition and version confirm them. Do not design a survival base around Shelf Mushroom behavior while it remains experimental.
A practical progression from first mushroom to permanent supply
- Locate Mushroom Fields. Explore ocean islands until you find the mycelium-covered, grassless biome.
- Secure starter materials. Collect both mushroom colors and enough mycelium for an outdoor plot.
- Build the first huge-mushroom clearing. Use bone meal for an immediate reserve and save part of the harvest for replanting.
- Move two mooshrooms home. Prepare a fenced pen and wheat before attempting the trip.
- Add a mycelium spread plot. This supplies mushrooms in daylight without consuming bone meal on every plant.
- Specialize as needed. Add a low-light indoor room for bone-meal-free expansion, a construction plot for mushroom blocks or a brown-mooshroom flower station for suspicious stew.
The result is a flexible system rather than a single “best” farm: huge mushrooms handle burst demand, mycelium handles safe outdoor growth, spread farms conserve bone meal, and mooshrooms turn a rare biome discovery into renewable food and effects.
