The best mining level depends on the ore you want. For a focused diamond run, work near Y -59 and place branch tunnels around Y -58; target redstone in the same deep area. Iron is strongest around Y 16 underground, copper around Y 48, lapis near Y 0, ordinary gold around Y -16, coal around Y 96 or on exposed mountains, and emeralds in high mountain biomes. Ancient debris is most practical around Nether Y 15. No single level is best for every resource because the 1.18 world-generation overhaul spread ores across different height bands.

This guide explains how those distributions work, when to cave or branch-mine, how to prepare, and how to return with useful resources instead of losing them to lava, falls or mobs.

Quick reference: the best practical level for each ore

Resource Practical target Best use case Important qualification
Diamond Y -59 density peak; branch tunnels around Y -58 Deep branch mining combined with cave checks Generates below Y 16 and becomes more common lower down; air exposure can reduce visible generation
Redstone Y -59 Collect during deep diamond runs Generates below Y 16 and increases with depth
Iron Y 16 underground General mining and early iron supply A separate high-elevation batch makes exposed mountains efficient
Gold Y -16 in ordinary Overworld terrain Underground branch or cave mining Badlands biomes provide additional generation
Copper About Y 48 Dripstone Cave exploration Dripstone Caves can contain especially large supplies
Lapis lazuli About Y 0 Mixed mining near the transition between stone and deepslate Its distribution is centered near zero
Coal About Y 96 or exposed mountainsides Surface and high-elevation collection Coal is generally easier to obtain near the surface than deep underground
Emerald Roughly Y 224 in high mountain biomes Mining exposed mountain faces and high caves Biome-restricted and rare outside mountainous regions
Ancient debris About Nether Y 15 Controlled tunnel clearing with beds or TNT Requires a diamond-tier pickaxe to harvest

These are practical targets rather than guarantees. Ore veins still vary by chunk, and the fastest route can be a nearby cave, mountain face or exposed vein rather than a perfectly chosen coordinate.

Why Minecraft has no universal “best” mining level

Minecraft 1.18 expanded the Overworld vertically and rewrote ore distribution. Mojang’s Caves & Cliffs Part II documentation explains that “there is no longer a single height level that is best for all ores – you need to make tradeoffs!” Each ore now follows one or more distribution patterns. Most are triangular: frequency rises toward a central height and falls above and below it. Iron and copper use multiple batches, producing useful deposits in more than one vertical region.

For a Survival player, this means choosing a target before digging. A deep expedition can produce diamonds and redstone efficiently, but it is a poor way to gather coal. A mountain trip may deliver coal, iron and emeralds without a long tunnel. Your Y coordinate is therefore a resource decision, not a universal setting.

Diamond mining: Y -59 peak, Y -58 tunnels

How deep diamonds generate

Diamond ore generates from the deep range up to Y 16, with increasing abundance as you descend. The highest practical density is around Y -59. Solid deepslate tunnels near that depth expose many blocks while leaving a small buffer above bedrock, so Y -58 is a convenient branch-mining layer.

Why caves do not always reveal every diamond

Diamond generation is reduced when a block would be exposed directly to air. A large cave can therefore show fewer diamonds than the same area mined through solid deepslate. Caving remains excellent for quickly checking exposed blocks, but a player focused on maximum diamond yield should combine cave exploration with controlled tunnels that expose blocks hidden behind the cave wall.

A practical diamond route

  1. Descend through a safe staircase rather than digging straight down until your coordinate display shows the high -50s.
  2. Establish a two-block-high main tunnel around Y -58 and place torches at a consistent interval.
  3. Cut side branches with a regular gap between them so the walls of adjacent branches do not overlap unnecessarily.
  4. Inspect every opening for lava before stepping forward. Keep a water bucket in the hotbar and block off dangerous flows with nonflammable blocks.
  5. Check connected caves for exposed ore, then return to your marked main route instead of creating unmarked loops.

An iron pickaxe is the minimum practical tool for diamond ore. Bring a second pickaxe or enough iron and wood for repairs; deepslate takes longer to break than ordinary stone.

Redstone: collect it during the same deep expedition

Redstone generates below Y 16 and becomes increasingly common deeper down, making the diamond layer around Y -59 an efficient overlap. If you are already branch-mining for diamonds, mine redstone veins instead of bypassing them. Fortune III can substantially increase the dust returned from redstone ore, so many players mark redstone-rich tunnels for a later Fortune trip if their first deep run uses an unenchanted pick.

Redstone ore can trigger light when mined, which helps visibility but does not replace a torch plan. Treat every redstone cavity as a possible lava opening, especially in the deepslate layers where lava aquifers occur.

Iron: underground Y 16 or high mountains

Underground supply

Iron has a strong underground bias around Y 16. This is the dependable target for a conventional mine when you need large quantities for tools, armor, rails, hoppers or anvils.

High-elevation alternative

Iron also has a second high-elevation pattern. Exposed mountain slopes and high caves can reveal large deposits without extensive digging, making them an efficient early-game option when you lack a safe deep mine. Bring ladders or blocks for steep terrain and watch for fall damage.

Fortune does not multiply iron in the same way it multiplies raw-drop ores such as diamond or redstone. Smelt iron ore or its raw form according to your storage plan; Silk Touch is useful when you want to transport ore blocks before processing.

Gold: ordinary Overworld depth and Badlands bonuses

In standard Overworld terrain, center a gold search around Y -16. Gold also receives extra generation in Badlands biomes, where surface cuts and shallow mineshafts can be more productive than a long branch network. If you are in a Badlands region, inspect exposed terracotta cliffs before committing to deep tunnels.

Gold ore and its raw output do not gain the same Fortune multiplication as diamond, redstone or lapis. Choose Silk Touch if you prefer to move ore blocks, or mine normally and smelt the drops. Nether gold ore is a separate resource source and should not be confused with the Overworld distribution described here.

Copper: Y 48, especially in Dripstone Caves

Copper is centered around Y 48 and is particularly abundant in Dripstone Caves. These caves can yield more copper quickly than a hand-dug tunnel because large surfaces are already exposed. Carry blocks to bridge gaps, and avoid standing below pointed dripstone or water streams while mining.

Copper is another ore for which Fortune can improve yield. If you need building material rather than raw ingots immediately, Silk Touch lets you relocate ore blocks, but it does not increase the amount of copper obtained per block.

Lapis lazuli: search near Y 0

Lapis lazuli distribution is centered around Y 0. That makes the stone-to-deepslate transition a useful compromise when you need lapis for enchanting but do not want a deep deepslate expedition. Check cave walls and short tunnels around this height, then move on rather than stripping a huge area once your enchanting supply is secured.

Fortune is valuable for lapis because one ore block can produce multiple items. If you are preparing an enchanting setup, reserve a Fortune pick for the lapis portion of your trip or mine the ore later after obtaining the enchantment.

Coal: high elevations and exposed terrain beat deep mines

Coal favors heights above Y 0, with a strong high-elevation bias. Around Y 96 and on exposed mountainsides, coal is often visible from the surface. This is generally safer and faster than descending into deepslate solely for fuel.

Use surface ravines, mountain faces and shallow caves as your first coal sources. Bring a shield, food and spare torches because exposed terrain can still contain hostile mobs after sunset. Fortune increases coal yield, but a normal stone or iron pick is sufficient to begin collecting it.

Emeralds: a mountain-biome resource

Emerald ore is biome-restricted and rare outside mountainous regions. Practical high-mountain searches can reach roughly Y 224, but the exact elevation of a cliff or cave matters less than being in the correct biome. Examine exposed stone faces and high cave systems before digging a large underground grid.

Because emerald ore is uncommon, treat each block as a bonus rather than a primary mining objective. Villager trading usually supplies emeralds more consistently once you have a functioning trading setup. Fortune can increase drops from emerald ore; Silk Touch is useful only if you specifically want to relocate the block.

Ancient debris and Netherite: work near Nether Y 15

Requirements

Ancient debris is most practical around Nether Y 15. You need a diamond-tier pickaxe to harvest it; lower-tier tools cannot collect the block. Nether mining also removes the safety margin provided by an Overworld water bucket, because water cannot be placed normally in the Nether.

Bed and TNT clearing

Beds explode in the Nether, and TNT can clear large areas while ancient debris survives the blast. Use either method in a controlled tunnel rather than placing explosives in an open cavern. Stand behind a solid block, ignite from a protected position, and inspect the newly opened space for lava and additional debris before advancing.

Explosive mining is faster but consumes beds or TNT and can expose several hazards at once. A pickaxe tunnel is slower and more predictable. Ancient debris is not multiplied by Fortune in the same way as diamond; use Silk Touch only for moving blocks, not for increasing netherite yield.

Branch mining versus caving

Method Strengths Risks and limits Best fit
Branch or tunnel mining Predictable block exposure, controlled lighting, easy navigation and repeatable routes Consumes tool durability and time; lava can break into the tunnel Focused deep diamond and redstone collection
Caving Exposes many blocks quickly and reveals mixed ores with little digging Falls, mobs, water and lava are more exposed; air exposure can hide some diamond generation Fast scouting, copper, iron, coal and mixed-resource trips
Hybrid approach Uses caves for reconnaissance, then tunnels through solid deepslate where needed Requires disciplined marking so the route does not become confusing Players who want speed and a higher chance of hidden deep ores

Choose based on four questions: which ore is the goal, how quickly do you need it, how much hazard exposure can you manage, and how much tool durability can you spend? A large, well-lit cave is usually the fastest way to gather mixed resources. A marked branch network is better when you want a repeatable diamond route.

Preparation checklist before you descend

  • Coordinates: Use Java’s F3 screen, or enable coordinates in Bedrock, and verify the Y value before starting the target layer.
  • Pickaxes: Carry an iron pickaxe or better for diamond and redstone. Bring at least one spare pick or the materials to craft one.
  • Water bucket: In the Overworld, keep it on the hotbar for lava control, fall protection and extinguishing fires.
  • Light: Take torches or another reliable light source. Light both your working face and the return route.
  • Blocks: Cobblestone, deepslate or another solid block can seal lava, bridge gaps and create cover.
  • Food and shield: Long tunnels and caves consume hunger, while shields reduce damage from skeletons and unexpected attacks.
  • Storage: Leave low-value clutter at home or use shulker boxes later in progression; a full inventory can force a risky early return.
  • Navigation marks: Use signs, distinctive block columns or a consistent torch convention at junctions.

How to branch-mine safely

  1. Choose the target layer. Confirm the ore-specific Y range before digging. Do not assume the diamond layer is appropriate for coal, copper or emeralds.
  2. Build a safe access shaft. Use a staircase or alternating ledges. Never dig straight down into an unknown block.
  3. Create a main corridor. Make it two blocks high, light it consistently and leave enough room to retreat if lava enters.
  4. Space side tunnels evenly. A regular pattern exposes more blocks with fewer duplicate walls than random digging.
  5. Probe before opening. When you hear lava or see a different block texture, place a block, widen the opening from the side and keep your escape route behind you.
  6. Mark every branch. A torch convention such as torches only on the right wall for the outward trip makes the return direction obvious.
  7. End the run deliberately. Return when your inventory, food or pick durability is low; do not push into an unknown cave because one more vein might be nearby.

Hazards below zero and in mountain terrain

Deep Overworld mining can encounter lava aquifers. Lava may fill a cavity behind a single block, so sprinting into newly opened spaces is dangerous. Keep a solid block selected, place it between yourself and a flow, and retreat to a lit section before reorganizing.

Mountain routes can approach deep-dark terrain. Avoid blind drops, listen for hostile activity and keep an escape staircase instead of entering every dark opening. Caves also add fall and water hazards that branch tunnels largely avoid.

When a route becomes confusing, stop expanding it. Place markers at the last safe junction, return to the surface and bring more supplies rather than improvising a rescue with an empty inventory.

Enchantments and a sensible progression

Early game

Begin with stone or iron tools for surface resources and shallow caves. An iron pick is the threshold for serious diamond and redstone mining. Collect coal and iron near the surface or at their favored elevations before committing to a deep expedition.

After obtaining diamonds

Craft a diamond pickaxe before targeting ancient debris. Keep one ordinary or Silk Touch tool for moving blocks, and plan a separate Fortune tool for yield-focused trips.

Fortune III priorities

Fortune III is especially valuable for diamond, redstone, lapis, coal, emerald and copper because these ores can return more material when mined. It does not multiply iron, gold or ancient-debris drops in the same way. If your goal is to transport ore blocks for later processing, Silk Touch may be the better choice.

Common mistakes and fixes

Using one level for every resource

Problem: A player digs at the diamond layer while expecting coal or copper. Fix: Select the ore first, then move to its practical height or use a surface alternative.

Digging straight down

Problem: You fall into lava or a cave. Fix: Use a staircase, place blocks as you descend and keep a retreat path.

Relying only on cave walls for diamonds

Problem: Air exposure can reduce visible diamond generation. Fix: Combine caving with solid deepslate branches near the deep target layer.

Entering the Nether without an escape plan

Problem: Beds, TNT or a pickaxe open a lava-filled cavity. Fix: Build a protected tunnel, stand behind cover during blasts and mark the portal route.

Returning with an unmarked route

Problem: Valuable ore is lost because the way home is unclear. Fix: Use a consistent torch side, signs at junctions and a visible staircase back to the surface.

A decision framework for your next mining trip

  1. Define the resource. Diamonds and redstone justify deep branch tunnels; coal and emeralds usually favor exposed terrain; copper favors Dripstone Caves.
  2. Pick the least risky source. Surface or mountain deposits can satisfy an early iron or coal shortage without a dangerous descent.
  3. Match the tool to the output. Use an iron-or-better pick for diamond and redstone, a diamond pick for ancient debris, Fortune for multiplied drops and Silk Touch for block transport.
  4. Set a stopping rule. Leave when your inventory, food or durability reaches a planned limit, not after an avoidable accident.
  5. Process and restock. Smelt or store the haul, repair tools and replace torches before the next run.

The central lesson from Mojang’s 2021 ore-generation update is simple: choose depth by resource. In practice, Y -58 branch tunnels are the dependable deep-diamond route, while caves, mountains and biome-specific generation often beat underground grinding for the other ores. Prepare for the hazards of the method you choose, mark your way home, and treat every level as a trade-off rather than a guarantee.
