To tame a Minecraft llama, repeatedly ride it with an empty hand until heart particles appear. It will throw you off several times first; feeding wheat can speed up the process. Once tamed, a llama can carry a chest with 3–15 storage slots, wear a colored carpet, and join a lead-powered caravan of up to nine followers.

Where llamas spawn
Look for wild llamas in groups of four to six. Their natural colors are brown, cream, white and gray. The official biome list includes savanna plateau, windswept hills, windswept gravelly hills and windswept forest. Bedrock Edition also includes regular savanna and windswept savanna in the listed spawning range.

Because groups are usually larger than one animal, inspect several before taming. The most important difference between individual llamas is hidden strength: it determines how much storage a chest provides.

How to tame a llama
1. Approach with an empty hand
Use an empty hand when you first mount the llama. Riding is the taming interaction; you do not tame it by placing a saddle on it. Mounting initially causes the llama to throw you off.
2. Keep mounting
- Mount the llama.
- After it throws you off, mount it again.
- Repeat until heart particles appear and it accepts you.
The number of attempts is not fixed. Treat each failed mount as progress toward the next attempt rather than abandoning that animal.

Wheat can help the taming process. Minecraft’s Bedrock tamemount component describes feed items as increasing an entity’s temper, which speeds taming. If you have wheat available, feed the llama between mounting attempts instead of relying only on repeated rides.
Once hearts appear, the llama is tamed. Riding remains useful for the taming interaction, but moving a group requires a lead and caravan behavior, not horse-style steering.

What a tamed llama can carry
Chest storage: 3 to 15 slots
Use a chest on a tamed llama to turn it into a pack animal. Capacity depends on the llama’s hidden strength value and ranges from 3 to 15 slots. Two llamas can therefore look identical while offering very different usable space.

If you are taming several animals, equip each candidate with a chest and compare the resulting capacity. Reserve the largest inventories for the heaviest or longest routes instead of assuming every llama has the same storage.

Carpet decoration and identification
Place a carpet on a tamed llama to add a colored, patterned rug. The carpet color changes the visible pattern. Use colors as labels: for example, assign one color to building materials, another to food, and another to a caravan that belongs to a particular destination. The carpet is cosmetic and does not replace the chest.
How to make a llama caravan
Lead one llama
Attach a lead to one llama. Nearby llamas then form a train behind the leashed leader. The official description states that up to nine nearby llamas can follow, allowing a maximum train of 10 llamas when the leader is counted.

Microsoft’s Bedrock behavior example uses a caravan entity count of 10, consistent with one leader plus nine followers. The followers are drawn into the train by proximity; the lead itself is attached to the leader, not separately to every llama.
Prepare the route
- Clear narrow entrances before bringing the caravan home.
- Inspect cliffs, water crossings and tight passages that can break the train or strand animals.
- Keep the route loaded. Unloaded chunks interrupt any long overland movement because the animals and their behavior are no longer active there.
- Use carpet colors or chest assignments to distinguish separate supply roles when several caravans operate from the same base.
A caravan is useful for moving supplies, animals or even the contents of a base overland, but it is not a substitute for a steerable horse. Plan the path first, then walk the lead llama through it.
Recover a separated follower
If a follower stops, first check for a cliff, water, fence, doorway or unloaded section of the route. Return to the last loaded area, clear the obstruction and bring the leader close enough for the nearby llamas to reform the train. Avoid pulling the leader through a narrow entrance while the rear of the caravan is still outside.

Recognize the trader pair
A wandering trader normally arrives with two trader llamas already leashed to the trader. They are a paired encounter, not a player-created caravan.

Act before the trader despawns
Minecraft’s wandering-trader guidance gives a 48,000-loaded-tick despawn period, equivalent to 40 minutes or two in-game days while the timer is running. Unloading and other conditions can affect timer behavior, so do not treat 40 minutes as a guaranteed real-world deadline in every situation.

- Move the encounter to a safe, enclosed area or prepare an enclosure nearby.
- Secure the llamas promptly rather than leaving them exposed while you gather materials.
- Once the animals are safe, organize them like any other pack animals: tame where applicable, equip chests after taming, and use carpets to identify their role.
The important distinction is timing: the trader is temporary, while the llamas need immediate protection if you want to keep using them. Minecraft’s guidance establishes the trader’s timer and the normal two-llama arrival; it does not provide a separate guaranteed despawn schedule for every trader-llama situation.
Choosing llamas for a supply run
Use this checklist before committing a llama to a long trip:
- Edition and location: Confirm that the biome you are searching is available in your edition, especially the additional Bedrock savanna biomes.
- Taming status: A wild llama must accept repeated mounts before you can use it as a player-managed pack animal.
- Capacity: Test chest storage and record whether the animal is near the 3-slot or 15-slot end of the range.
- Identification: Add a carpet color that communicates destination, cargo or ownership within your base.
- Route fit: Favor a clear, loaded route without cliffs, deep water, narrow entrances or frequent chunk unloads.
- Caravan role: Put the llama with the lead in front and keep the other animals close enough to become followers.
Common problems and fixes
The llama keeps throwing me off
That is normal during taming. Continue mounting with an empty hand. Feed wheat to increase temper and shorten the process, then keep trying until hearts appear.

I cannot make it steer like a horse
Minecraft’s guidance establishes riding for taming, not horse-like directional control. Use a lead on one llama and let the nearby animals follow in a caravan.
My chest has fewer slots than another llama’s
Chest capacity varies with hidden strength. The range is 3–15 slots, so a smaller inventory is an inherent difference between llamas, not necessarily a malfunction. Compare several animals before assigning cargo.
The caravan will not fit through my doorway
Widen or clear the entrance and approach slowly. Narrow entrances are a stated route hazard; move the leader through only after checking that the followers have a continuous path.
The trader disappeared before I secured the llamas
The wandering trader’s timer is 48,000 loaded ticks, or 40 minutes/two in-game days under the stated conditions. Trader encounters are temporary, so prepare an enclosure first and secure the pair as soon as they arrive.
