Minecraft JNI Error: Find the Java Version Mismatch and Get the Game Running

“A JNI error has occurred” is not a diagnosis. It is a generic Java startup message. Read the exception printed underneath it before changing settings. If that trace contains UnsupportedClassVersionError, the Java executable launching Minecraft is usually older than the Java major version required by that specific Minecraft release. Confirm the game version, identify the runtime actually being used, and then point the client or server at a compatible Java installation.

What the Minecraft JNI message actually tells you

JNI is Java’s Native Interface, the boundary between Java code and native components. Minecraft can display a JNI startup error when Java cannot load or start the game, but the headline does not identify which startup condition failed. The useful diagnosis is in the exception text and launcher log that follow.

Mojang’s issue report for the exact wording, “A JNI error has occurred, please check your installation and try again”, shows why the second line matters. In the reported case, the follow-up was an UnsupportedClassVersionError with class-file version details. Those details indicated that the selected Java runtime could not understand classes produced for a newer Java release.

Therefore, treat the JNI sentence as a sign to inspect the full trace, not as proof that Java is always the problem. A different exception can accompany the same headline and requires a different investigation.

Start by recording the launch context

Before changing anything, write down three facts. They determine which Java installation must be checked.

  1. Exact Minecraft version: record the release or snapshot shown by the launcher or server package. Java requirements change between releases.
  2. What is failing: distinguish the game client, a locally started server JAR, and a hosted server. Each can invoke a different Java executable.
  3. Complete exception: copy the lines below the JNI headline, especially any class-file and runtime-version numbers.

A Java version installed for one profile, operating-system user, or hosting container is not automatically the one used by another launch path. This is why “I installed Java” is not enough evidence that Minecraft is using it.

When UnsupportedClassVersionError appears

How to read the class-file numbers

Java compilers write a major class-file version into every compiled class. A newer Java runtime can generally read classes made for older releases, but an older runtime cannot read classes made for a newer release. The exception normally states both sides of that mismatch: the class version required by the game and the highest version recognized by the runtime that started it.

The Mojang tracker example records classes at version 60.0 while the active runtime recognized only up to 52.0. That is a compatibility clue, not a graphics, memory, or hardware fault: the process reached Java, but that Java was too old for the classes it was asked to load.

What the message does not prove

An unsupported class version strongly points to runtime selection or age, but the generic JNI headline alone does not. If the detailed trace names another exception, follow that exception instead of forcing a Java-version explanation. Read the launcher log for the first substantive error, since later lines can be consequences of the initial failure.

Match Java to the exact Minecraft release

Do not apply one Java number to every Minecraft version. The documented requirements below are tied to specific releases.

Minecraft release Java requirement documented by Mojang Practical implication
Java Edition 1.18 Java 17 or later for custom Java setups and third-party launchers The default Launcher downloads and installs the correct runtime; manually configured launchers must supply a compatible Java 17-or-later installation.
Java Edition 26.1 Java 25 The release includes Microsoft OpenJDK 25. This is a requirement for 26.1, not a rule to apply retroactively to older releases.

Mojang’s 1.18 pre-release notes state: “If you are using a custom Java setup or a third-party launcher, you will need to ensure that your Java installation is version 17 or above.” The 26.1 release notes state: “The game now requires Java 25.” The wording is release-specific, so first identify your version rather than installing the newest Java indiscriminately.

Minecraft’s Java Edition system requirements are also a useful reference, but they do not replace checking the requirement for the particular build you are launching.

Fix a client launched by the official Launcher

The official Launcher’s default setup is the least complicated path. For 1.18, Mojang says the Launcher downloads and installs the correct Java runtime. If a default installation still shows an unsupported class version, verify that the profile has not been changed to a custom executable and that the installation is actually the one you selected.

  1. Open the installation or profile you are trying to run. Confirm its version number, including whether it is a snapshot or another test build.
  2. Inspect the Java runtime setting for that installation. If it is set to a manually chosen executable, note its full path. A path left over from an older Java installation can launch an older runtime even after a newer one is installed.
  3. Return to the Launcher-managed runtime when appropriate. Remove the custom override or select the runtime supplied by the Launcher for that profile, then save the installation settings.
  4. Launch once and read the complete log. If the class-version exception disappears, the selected runtime was the issue. If a different exception appears, troubleshoot that new exception rather than repeating the Java-version change.

Labels and controls can vary by Launcher revision, so use the installation’s Java or executable field rather than relying on a particular menu name. The important check is which executable the profile invokes.

Fix custom and third-party client setups

Custom launchers, modded profiles, and scripts commonly bypass the runtime bundled with the official Launcher. Select a Java major version that the exact Minecraft release supports, then assign that executable to the affected profile. For a 1.18 profile, the documented floor is Java 17. For 26.1, use Java 25 as required by its release notes.

Do not assume that changing the system-wide PATH changes a launcher’s choice. Many launchers store an absolute path, bundle their own runtime, or run under a different user account. Check the profile’s executable path and compare it with the version reported by that executable.

If the launcher offers multiple runtime choices, compare the major version, not only the vendor name or update date. A Java 17 runtime and a Java 25 runtime are not interchangeable for every Minecraft release. Keep separate profiles explicit when you play versions with different requirements.

Fix a local server JAR or hosted server

A server can fail before it opens a port for the same reason as a client, but the relevant runtime is the one invoked by the server command or hosting environment. Installing Java for your desktop does not necessarily alter a service, panel, container, scheduled task, or shell script.

  1. Identify the server JAR’s Minecraft version. Use the version supplied by the server package or its release documentation.
  2. Inspect the startup command. Look for an explicit Java path, such as a service configuration, script variable, container image, or host control-panel setting. Record the executable rather than assuming it is the system default.
  3. Check that executable’s major version. Run that exact executable with -version where you have shell access, or use the host’s runtime-information control. The result must meet the requirement for the server’s Minecraft release.
  4. Restart the server through its normal mechanism. A test in your interactive shell is not conclusive if the production service uses another account or environment.

Mojang’s tracker discusses client and server launch paths separately because runtime selection can differ between them. On managed hosting, ask the provider which Java executable and major version the selected server image uses; changing Java on your personal computer cannot repair a remote process.

Verify the Java that is really running

When you can open a terminal, first check the default command:

java -version

That command reports the Java found through your current PATH. It is useful, but it may not match Minecraft if the Launcher or server command uses a full path. Check the executable configured in the profile or startup script and run that file directly with -version. On a server, perform the check as the same account and through the same service or container that starts Minecraft whenever possible.

Compare the reported major version with the Minecraft release requirement. Do not be distracted by a vendor’s build number, patch suffix, or a newer-looking date; those details do not make an incompatible major version suitable. If two Java installations are present, remove ambiguity by selecting the intended executable explicitly in the launcher or startup command.

Why “install the newest Java” is not a universal fix

Java compatibility is release-specific. A newer runtime may solve an old runtime’s inability to read newer classes, but it can also be rejected by older Minecraft versions or by tooling that expects a particular Java generation. The Mojang tracker includes a historical Launcher case in which a newer runtime was flagged as incompatible for older Minecraft versions.

Use the exact Minecraft version as the decision point: determine its documented Java major version, then choose a runtime that meets that requirement and is supported by your launcher, mods, and server tooling. Keep separate Java assignments for separate installations when necessary instead of replacing every runtime on the machine.

If the detailed exception is not a class-version error

Do not change Java versions solely because the first line says JNI. Read the first meaningful exception and the surrounding log. A failure involving a missing native library, malformed option, permission problem, or another startup condition needs its own remedy. Record the complete text, the Minecraft version, and whether the process is a client or server before searching for a fix.

If changing to the documented runtime produces a new error, that is diagnostic progress: the original class-loading barrier may be gone. Continue with the new exception’s exact wording, and avoid deleting unrelated files or changing graphics settings unless the log points there.

Actions that should not be your first move

  • Do not buy hardware. The cited class-version mismatch occurs before Minecraft can run and is a software compatibility issue.
  • Do not delete launcher checks or force an arbitrary executable. Those actions can hide the supported runtime and make version-specific troubleshooting harder.
  • Do not uninstall every Java installation blindly. Other Minecraft profiles, tools, or servers may depend on a different major version.
  • Do not reinstall the entire game as a default response. First match the runtime selected by the failing launch path; the official evidence supports that targeted check.

A compact decision path

  1. Write down the exact Minecraft release and classify the failure as client, local server, or hosted server.
  2. Read beyond the JNI headline and copy the detailed exception.
  3. If it says UnsupportedClassVersionError, compare the class-file requirement with the major version of the executable actually launching Minecraft.
  4. For 1.18 custom setups, provide Java 17 or later; for 26.1, provide Java 25. Do not generalize either requirement to every release.
  5. Check the configured executable, not merely the newest Java installed on the computer.
  6. Launch again and use any new exception as the next diagnostic clue.

This process separates a generic startup message from the specific condition that caused it, while preserving compatibility for older Minecraft installations and for server environments that use their own Java runtime.
