Choose Bedrock if you want to play with friends on consoles or mobile, or prefer controller and touch support. Choose Java if you play on PC and care most about community mods, custom servers, snapshots, or older game versions. On Windows PC, the Java & Bedrock bundle includes both editions, but you must launch the one your friends use: Java and Bedrock players cannot join each other’s standard multiplayer games.
Start with your device and your friends
Your device determines which editions are available; your friends’ edition determines which multiplayer games you can join. Check both before buying.
- Windows, Mac, or Linux: Java is available for these computer platforms. Bedrock is also available on Windows, but not Mac or Linux according to Minecraft’s current platform guidance. Check Minecraft’s platform and edition list before purchasing, since storefront availability can change.
- Console, mobile, or Chromebook: Bedrock is the relevant edition on supported devices. The platform list includes Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, iOS, Android, and Chromebook, among others; specific device and storefront support can vary.
- Friends’ setup: Ask whether they play Java or Bedrock, not just whether they play on a computer or console. Cross-play requires the same edition.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No. Java and Bedrock use separate multiplayer systems. A Java player cannot join a standard Bedrock world, server, Realm, or LAN game, and vice versa. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements specify that players need the matching edition.
Java supports multiplayer across Windows, Mac, and Linux. Bedrock supports cross-play among supported Bedrock platforms, including Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and mobile. Device-generation support can change, so confirm compatibility for a particular console or device on Minecraft’s current product information.

On Windows PC, Minecraft’s Java & Bedrock PC bundle includes both editions, and the unified launcher lets you switch between them. That bundle is a purchase convenience, not a bridge between editions: you still need to start the same edition as your friends. Do not assume the PC bundle applies to console or mobile purchases.
What Java does better
Community mods and custom servers
Java is the stronger fit if you want to change how the game works or explore community-run servers. Minecraft’s edition comparison describes Java as open to third-party skins, maps, and gameplay-changing mods, while noting that these options can involve a learning curve. Treat downloads from third parties carefully; the availability of community content is not a guarantee that every download is safe.

Java is also the natural choice when a particular community server or mod requires it. Confirm the server’s edition and version before setting up, since a Java server is not a Bedrock server.
Snapshots and older releases
Java players can use snapshots—test builds for upcoming changes—and select older released versions through the launcher. Snapshots may be unstable, and worlds opened in test builds can be at risk. Minecraft recommends backing up worlds before trying them. Use a copy of a world rather than your main save if you want to experiment.

What Bedrock does better
Play across supported device types
Bedrock is the practical choice when your group includes console or mobile players. It supports cross-play with other Bedrock players on supported platforms, whereas Java multiplayer is for Java players on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Verify support for your particular device and game version, especially when console generations or storefronts are involved.
Controller, touch, and curated content
Minecraft’s comparison identifies controller and touch input for Bedrock, making it a better fit if you want to play without a keyboard and mouse. Bedrock also offers the in-game Marketplace, a curated route to maps, skins, and other content, as well as add-ons. These are optional ways to customize the game, not requirements for playing the base game.

Local play, online requirements, and Realms
Console multiplayer and local split-screen
Minecraft says console Bedrock supports local split-screen. Online multiplayer on consoles may require the platform’s online subscription: Minecraft Help lists Xbox Game Pass Core for Xbox, PlayStation Plus for PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online for Switch. The same multiplayer requirements page also identifies matching game versions, a stable internet connection or LAN, and account or invitation requirements. Platform policies can change, so check the relevant console service before relying on online play.
Realms are edition-specific
Realms subscriptions are separate for Java and Bedrock; a Realm for one edition does not make it playable from the other. Minecraft’s Realms page describes Java Realms for Windows, Linux, and macOS, and Bedrock Realms for consoles, mobile, and Windows computers.

The Realms page lists these US monthly plan terms: Bedrock Realms is $3.99 for the host plus two other simultaneous players; Bedrock Realms Plus is $7.99 for the host plus ten other simultaneous players; Java Realms is $7.99.
