The secret igloo basement is directly beneath the carpet inside some snowy-biome igloos. Break or remove the carpet, open the trapdoor, and climb down. Not every igloo generates this room: Minecraft Wiki reports an approximate 50% basement rate, while Mojang describes the trapdoor as something you find only “sometimes.”

A basement igloo contains a ready-made curing setup: a zombie villager, a normal villager, a brewing stand holding a Potion of Weakness, a chest containing a golden apple, and a cauldron. Protect the room from sunlight and hostile mobs, throw the splash Potion of Weakness at the zombie villager, then use the golden apple on it. The conversion can take up to five minutes.

Igloos are small snow-block houses that generate in snowy biomes. Their white walls and the surrounding snow make them easy to overlook, especially when weather, hills, or uneven terrain break up the outline. The structure itself is not rare treasure storage. Its importance is the optional room underneath: a compact, naturally generated rescue-and-curing site that supplies the two key items needed to turn a zombie villager back into a villager.
Mojang’s official igloo description says that “sometimes you’ll discover a trapdoor which leads down into a secret basement.” Minecraft Help similarly describes a carpet-hidden trapdoor that leads to a basement containing a villager and a zombie villager. The wording matters: the basement is a variant of the structure, not a feature every igloo must have.

How to find an igloo
Search the right terrain
Look in snowy biomes and scan for a small, rounded house made from snow blocks. The building may be partly buried or visually merge with nearby snow layers. Search from slightly elevated ground when possible, then check depressions and the edges of snowy hills where a low roof can disappear against the landscape.
- Prioritize broad, continuous snowy areas rather than isolated patches.
- Look for the igloo’s domed snow-block roof and a short entrance tunnel or doorway.
- Walk around terrain that looks unusually regular; a roof can be hidden by snow or a slope.
- When exploring at night, light your route and avoid stopping in exposed areas while you inspect structures.
There is no single coordinate, seed, or edition-independent command documented for finding every igloo. Generation depends on the world seed and the edition and version you are playing, so a visual search of snowy terrain is the dependable method covered by Mojang’s guidance.

Confirm that the building is an igloo
An igloo is a small snow house rather than a naturally occurring snow mound. Enter through the doorway and inspect the floor. The hidden entrance is inside the structure, under carpet; it is not a hatch outside, beneath the entrance tunnel, or somewhere in the surrounding snow.
How to open the secret basement
- Enter the igloo. Check that the room is safe enough to work in before breaking blocks.
- Inspect the carpeted floor. The basement entrance is concealed beneath the carpet inside the main room.
- Remove the carpet covering the hatch. Break or pick up the carpet pieces until you can see the trapdoor.
- Open the trapdoor. A ladder or vertical shaft leads down to the lower room.
- Climb down carefully. Stop at the bottom and secure the room before approaching either villager.
If there is no trapdoor beneath the carpet, that igloo is the surface-only variant. Do not dig through the entire floor searching for a room that did not generate. Minecraft Wiki’s 2025–2026 page crawl gives an approximate 50% chance of a basement; Mojang’s official wording is less numerical and says only that the trapdoor appears “sometimes.” Treat the percentage as a generation estimate, not a guarantee for every version or edition.
What is inside an igloo basement?
The basement is arranged as a small prison or laboratory below the surface room. The documented contents are:

| Item or occupant | Purpose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Villager | The normal villager already present in the setup | It is part of the built-in scenario and can be left in place or moved after the room is secure. |
| Zombie villager | The curing target | Protect it from sunlight and hostile damage while the conversion runs. |
| Brewing stand | Provides the weakness potion needed for curing | The official description identifies a Potion of Weakness in the stand. |
| Chest | Contains the golden apple and modest extra supplies | The official article mentions supplies such as coal, food, a gold nugget, or an emerald; this is not a high-value treasure cache. |
| Cauldron | Part of the generated basement furnishing | It is a utility block in the room, not a replacement for the splash potion. |
| Cobweb | Decorative and restrictive block listed by Minecraft Wiki | Clear it only when doing so makes movement or protection safer. |
The most valuable feature is the opportunity to cure the zombie villager with supplies already placed nearby. Looting the chest without curing is faster, but it uses the same opportunity for ordinary materials rather than producing a second villager.
Secure the basement before curing anything
The lower room is enclosed, but it is still possible for the zombie villager to be damaged or for you to lose control of the situation. Before throwing a potion, make the room a controlled workspace.
- Block sunlight. Keep the zombie villager underground or otherwise shaded. Sun exposure is especially dangerous once the curing process begins.
- Light the area. Add light where you can without opening the room to the surface. This reduces the chance of additional hostile mobs appearing nearby.
- Control access. Close the trapdoor and any openings you create. If you need to move between the surface and basement, make a safe route rather than leaving a large exposed shaft.
- Separate your working position. Stand where you can throw the splash potion without being trapped between the two villagers or against a wall.
- Check the supplies first. Confirm that the brewing stand has the weakness potion and that the chest has the golden apple before starting. If either item is missing, do not assume the cure can proceed with the remaining furnishings alone.
The normal villager does not replace the required golden apple or Potion of Weakness. The curing sequence is performed on the zombie villager only.
How to cure the igloo’s zombie villager
1. Gather the two required items
You need a Splash Potion of Weakness and a golden apple. In a standard basement, the brewing stand supplies the weakness potion and the chest supplies the golden apple. Verify both before you expose yourself to the zombie villager.
2. Keep the target protected
Leave the zombie villager in the shaded basement. Avoid opening the ceiling or carrying it outdoors while it is waiting for the cure. Keep the area free of hostile threats and make sure you can reach the target without accidentally striking it.

3. Throw the Splash Potion of Weakness
Use the splash potion on the zombie villager so the weakness effect applies to it. Aim at the target rather than the floor or the normal villager. A thrown splash potion affects entities in its area, so good positioning helps you avoid wasting the supplied potion.
4. Use the golden apple
Immediately use the golden apple on the weakened zombie villager. The weakness effect and golden-apple action are the documented item sequence; eating the apple yourself or using it on the normal villager does not start the conversion.
5. Wait and defend the room
The curing process can take up to five minutes. Remain nearby, keep the room shaded, and prevent hostile damage while you wait. Do not remove the target from the protected basement just because the change is not immediate.
6. Confirm the conversion
When the process finishes, the zombie villager becomes a normal villager. You now have the original villager plus the cured villager, which is the main long-term payoff of preserving the basement setup.
Choose what to do when you find the basement
Finding the hatch gives you three practical choices. The right one depends on whether you need villagers, supplies, or simply want to keep exploring.

| Choice | Time and risk | Resource cost | Payoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave the igloo | Lowest immediate risk; no basement work | No items consumed | You keep the location undisrupted but give up the room’s contents and curing opportunity. |
| Loot without curing | Quick once the room is safe; still requires dealing with the occupants | You may take the chest supplies, but the golden apple is no longer available for the cure if you use or remove it | Modest starter materials such as food, coal, a gold nugget, or an emerald, depending on the generated chest. |
| Cure the zombie villager | Highest attention requirement; protect the target for up to five minutes | Consumes the Splash Potion of Weakness and golden apple | Produces a second villager and preserves the purpose of the built-in curing setup. |
If your immediate goal is a second villager, cure first and sort the remaining loot afterward. If you only need a few supplies and have no use for another villager, looting is quicker. If you are poorly equipped, leaving is safer than starting a cure you cannot protect.

“I found an igloo, but there is no basement.”
That is normal for the surface-only variant. Remove the carpet and inspect the floor once; if no trapdoor appears, stop digging and continue searching for another igloo. A basement is optional, with Minecraft Wiki estimating that about half of igloos generate one.
Recommended Free Tools
“I searched outside for the entrance.”
The secret entrance is under the carpet inside the igloo. Re-enter the main room and lift the floor covering there.
“The zombie villager died before it cured.”
Restart with a different igloo if necessary. For the next attempt, keep the target underground or shaded, light and close the room, and remove nearby threats before applying the potion and apple.
“The potion did not cure the zombie villager.”
Check the sequence: the potion must be a splash Potion of Weakness, and it must be applied to the zombie villager before the golden apple is used. The normal villager is not the target. If the effect was missed, reposition yourself and verify the brewing stand’s item before trying again.

“The cure seems stuck.”
Conversion is not instant and can take up to five minutes. Keep the room protected during that interval instead of breaking the enclosure or moving the target into sunlight.
“The basement looks different from a guide or video.”
Generation details can vary between Java and Bedrock and across game versions. The shared features documented by Mojang are the carpet-hidden trapdoor, the basement with villagers, the weakness potion, and the golden apple. Furnishing details such as the cobweb are reported by Minecraft Wiki and may not be presented identically in every edition or version.
Edition and version cautions
The core walkthrough applies to the shared igloo structure described by Mojang, but Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock editions can differ in generation and behavior. The documented sources do not provide a coordinate formula, universal seed list, or command that finds igloos across editions. Use the visual search method, verify the carpet and trapdoor in your own world, and treat the approximately 50% basement figure as a broad generation estimate rather than an edition-independent promise.
For a compact reference, Mojang’s official igloo article says the basement has a brewing stand with a Potion of Weakness, a chest with a golden apple, and a prison containing a villager and a zombie villager. Minecraft Help describes the same carpet-hidden entrance, while Minecraft Wiki supplies the approximate basement frequency and lists the cauldron and cobweb.
