The survival route is straightforward: obtain a Dried Ghast, keep it continuously waterlogged for about 20 minutes to hatch a Ghastling, wait roughly 20 more minutes for the Ghastling to mature, craft a Harness, and equip it on the adult. The first rider controls flight, and as many as four players can ride together.

What you need to know before starting
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where does the process start? | With a Dried Ghast, found in a Nether Fossil, obtained by bartering with Piglins, or crafted. |
| How long does hatching take? | Approximately 20 minutes of uninterrupted waterlogging. |
| How long does growth take? | About 20 minutes for a Ghastling to become a Happy Ghast; snowballs can accelerate it. |
| What is the Harness recipe? | Three Leather, two Glass Blocks, and one Wool Block. |
| How many riders are supported? | Up to four players. |
| What can it do? | Fly horizontally and vertically, tow supported entities with leads, and act as a stable platform for building. |
The Happy Ghast is a mountable flying mob, not a creature you find naturally as an adult. Every ride begins with the Dried Ghast stage.
Step 1: Obtain a Dried Ghast
You have three survival methods. Choose based on whether you already have Nether access, a Piglin trading setup, or a supply of Ghast Tears.

Find one in a Nether Fossil
Dried Ghasts can generate in Nether Fossil structures. Search the Nether for these fossil formations and inspect the structure for the block. Nether exploration is dangerous: carry fire resistance if available, protect yourself from lava, and mark your route so the return trip does not become the hardest part of the process.
Barter with Piglins
Piglins can provide a Dried Ghast through bartering. Wear at least one piece of gold armor to avoid ordinary Piglin hostility, then throw gold ingots to nearby Piglins and collect their trades. A controlled trading area makes repeated attempts safer and lets you keep the block protected while you work.

Craft it
The recipe uses one Soul Sand block and eight Ghast Tears:
- Center: one Soul Sand.
- Remaining eight slots: one Ghast Tear in each slot around the Soul Sand.
Ghast Tears come from defeating Ghasts, so this route may require more combat than finding or bartering for the block. The recipe is useful when you have a reliable Ghast farm or a large Nether hunting area.
Step 2: Hydrate the Dried Ghast
Move the Dried Ghast to a location where it can remain waterlogged continuously. The Overworld is usually the easiest place because you can build a safe enclosure, keep the block supplied with water, and avoid Nether hazards.
- Place the Dried Ghast where you want the Ghastling to appear.
- Surround or cover it with water so the block stays waterlogged at all times.
- Leave the water in place for approximately 20 minutes.
- Watch for the hydration stages and the green particles that indicate rehydration progress.
- When the final stage completes, the block produces a Ghastling.
How the three hydration states work
The block moves through three hydration levels during the roughly 20-minute process. This is progress over time, not an instant transformation after a single water placement. Keep the water source stable rather than relying on a temporary flow that can be removed by an update or accidental block change.

What happens if water is removed
Removing the water reverses hydration progress on the same general timescale. A partially hydrated block therefore loses time if it dries out. Mining the block is more severe: breaking it returns the Dried Ghast to its dry state, so you must begin the hydration process again after placing it.
- Use a roof or wall around the setup to stop accidental water removal.
- Do not mine or relocate the block once hydration has started.
- Keep the area loaded while you are waiting; if you leave the area, growth may not advance as expected because the relevant chunks are no longer active.
- Place the setup away from redstone, pistons, flowing lava, and other construction that could disturb the water.
Recognizing a stalled hatch
If the block appears unchanged, first check that water is still touching it and that the chunk is loaded. A dry block cannot continue the timer. If you broke and replaced it, the timer has reset even if the replacement looks identical.
Step 3: Raise the Ghastling
Once hydration finishes, the Dried Ghast produces a Ghastling. The baby mob is the stage between the block and the rideable adult.
Ghastling behavior
A Ghastling follows nearby players or suitable passive and neutral mobs within 16 blocks. When no suitable target is close, it idles near its home position. You can use this behavior to keep it in a safe pen while it grows: stay close enough for it to follow, but remove hazards such as lava, cacti, and drops that could trap it.

Under normal conditions, a Ghastling takes about 20 minutes to mature into a Happy Ghast. Feeding it snowballs shortens the growth period. Snowballs can also tempt the Ghastling toward you, which is useful when it drifts away from your preferred enclosure or landing area.
Keep a stack of snowballs in your hotbar during the waiting period. Use them to draw the Ghastling back rather than chasing it into unsafe terrain. The exact amount of acceleration per snowball is not specified in the release documentation, so plan around the approximately 20-minute baseline instead of assuming a particular number of throws.

Prepare the landing area while it grows
Use the growth interval to build a clear, well-lit staging area. Leave vertical clearance above the platform, fence off nearby drops, and place a chest with the Harness and leads nearby. A broad platform makes the first approach easier because the adult descends toward a player holding a Harness or snowball.
Step 4: Craft a Ghast Harness
The Harness is the item that makes the adult Happy Ghast rideable. It can only be equipped on a Happy Ghast, not on the Dried Ghast or Ghastling.

| Leather | 3 | Harness body |
| Glass Blocks | 2 | Harness frame |
| Wool Block | 1 | Sets the Harness color |
Arrange the three Leather, two Glass Blocks, and one Wool Block in the crafting grid according to the Harness recipe shown in your recipe book. The wool color determines the initial Harness color. There are 16 color variants, and an existing Harness can be re-dyed if you want to change its appearance later.
Gathering materials efficiently
- Leather comes from common overworld animals or other established leather sources.
- Glass Blocks require smelting sand, so bring fuel if you are crafting at the growth site.
- Wool comes from sheep or a wool farm; any of the 16 dye colors can determine the Harness color.
Craft the Harness before the Ghastling finishes so you can equip it immediately when the adult appears. Carry a spare if several players are preparing separate rides, but each Happy Ghast needs its own Harness.
Step 5: Equip the Harness and mount
Bring the adult down
An adult Happy Ghast may be airborne when you first approach. Hold a Harness or a snowball so it comes down toward you. Stand in your prepared landing area and avoid moving under hazards while you wait for it to descend.
Equip the Harness
- Hold the Harness in your hand.
- Use the interact action on the adult Happy Ghast to equip it.
- Confirm that the Harness is visible and that the mob is now ready for passengers.
- Interact again to mount.
The Harness cannot be placed on a Ghastling. If interaction fails, verify that the mob has completed its growth stage and that you are holding the correct item rather than a similarly named material.

Passenger positions and controls
The first player to mount sits in the front position and controls the Happy Ghast’s horizontal and vertical movement. Additional riders occupy the side seats. The total capacity is four players, including the controller.
- First rider: controls direction and altitude.
- Second, third, and fourth riders: occupy side seats and do not take over steering.
- Dismounting: sneaking or crouching dismounts the top rider.
Coordinate before mounting: decide who will steer, who will handle leads, and where passengers will dismount. The player in front should keep enough clearance for the side seats and cargo below.
Using a Happy Ghast for transport and building
Flight and roaming range
The Happy Ghast can move horizontally and vertically, giving it true three-dimensional travel rather than a ground-mount jump. Its normal roaming range is within 64 blocks of its home position. While harnessed, that range is reduced to 32 blocks. A leash keeps it closer still, which is useful when you park it beside a base or loading platform.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe official release information does not provide a numeric flight-speed figure. Do not treat it as a confirmed speed champion over other mounts; its documented advantage is flexible vertical and horizontal movement, not a published speed ranking.
Towing entities with leads
A harnessed Happy Ghast can tow supported cargo and mobs when you attach leads. Documented examples include:
- Boats
- Chest boats
- Horses
- Camels
- Sniffers
- Other entities that the game supports for this towing interaction
Attach the lead from a safe, low altitude, then have the pilot rise gradually. Check that the towed entity is clear of trees, cliffs, and structures before traveling. Chest boats can carry supplies while the Happy Ghast provides the lift, but the lead connection remains vulnerable to terrain and distance.

Landing after a midair dismount
If you dismount in midair, the Happy Ghast descends before resuming its normal roaming behavior. It does not simply remain frozen at the altitude where you left it. Plan the dismount point anyway: descending over lava, a cave, or an unloaded area can make recovery difficult.

Standing on top of the Happy Ghast makes it stop and align to a cardinal direction. This predictable orientation is useful for aerial building, surveying, and placing long straight runs of blocks. Build a small platform or carry scaffolding so you can work safely, and keep a leash available if the mob is near the edge of its home range.

The useful comparison is not a claimed speed record; it is what the Happy Ghast enables in survival play.
| Capability | Happy Ghast | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger capacity | Up to four players | A single flight can move a small group. |
| Movement | Horizontal and vertical flight | Crosses terrain and gains altitude without roads or towers. |
| Cargo and mob towing | Supported boats, chest boats, horses, camels, sniffers, and other compatible entities via leads | Extends transport beyond the riders themselves. |
| Acquisition time | About 20 minutes hydration plus about 20 minutes growth before snowball acceleration | Plan a roughly 40-minute baseline in addition to gathering materials. |
| Home-range behavior | 64 blocks normally; 32 blocks while harnessed; closer when leashed | Choose a parking and tethering strategy before long trips. |
| Published flight speed | Not stated in the official release information | Avoid unsupported speed comparisons. |
Troubleshooting checklist
The Dried Ghast is not progressing
- Check that every part of the block remains waterlogged.
- Confirm the area is loaded and has not been unloaded for most of the waiting period.
- Look for green rehydration particles and a change through the three hydration levels.
- If the block was mined, restart the process from the dry state.
The Ghastling disappeared or will not follow
- Move within 16 blocks so it can select you as a nearby target.
- Use snowballs to tempt it back toward the home area.
- Remove hazards and narrow gaps from the enclosure.
- Remember that it idles near its home position when no suitable player or mob is nearby.
The adult will not accept the Harness
- Verify that it is a fully grown Happy Ghast, not a Ghastling.
- Hold the Harness itself when interacting.
- Approach while holding a Harness or snowball so the adult descends into reach.
- Check that you are using the correct edition and a release that includes the Chase the Skies content.
Passengers cannot control the mob
Only the first rider steers. Have the designated pilot mount first; later passengers should use the side seats. If the pilot dismounts, establish a new front rider before continuing.
Release and edition notes
The Happy Ghast and Harness mechanics described here are documented for Java Edition 1.21.6 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.90. Bedrock 1.21.90 was released on June 17, 2025. Because Minecraft receives ongoing updates, a later patch may alter recipes, timings, AI ranges, or controls. If your game shows different behavior, compare the exact edition and version number displayed by your launcher or title screen before troubleshooting the build.
Complete survival checklist
- Enter the Nether and obtain a Dried Ghast from a Nether Fossil, Piglin barter, or the one-Soul-Sand/eight-Ghast-Tear recipe.
- Move it to a protected, loaded Overworld site.
- Keep it continuously waterlogged for approximately 20 minutes.
- Wait for the Ghastling to appear and keep it safe within its 16-block follow behavior.
- Use snowballs to attract it and accelerate its roughly 20-minute growth period.
- Craft a Harness from three Leather, two Glass Blocks, and one Wool Block.
- Hold the Harness or a snowball to bring the adult down.
- Equip the Harness, choose the first rider as pilot, and add up to three side-seat passengers.
- Use leads for supported cargo or mobs, and leash the mount when you need a tighter parking range.
Once those steps are complete, the Happy Ghast becomes a reusable four-seat flying mount and a practical aerial transport platform. Its most distinctive uses are group flight, vertical building access, and lead-towing for boats, chest boats, and compatible mobs.
