The reliable way to sort Minecraft storage automatically is a tileable hopper-and-redstone line: items enter an input chest, each filter cell recognizes one item, matching items drop into that cell’s output chest, and everything else continues to an overflow chest. A standard cell uses 41 units of the target item and four filler items in its filter hopper. Build for your edition, test at the actual feed rate, and always keep an overflow destination.

What an automatic chest sorter does

An automatic sorter divides a continuous stream of items into labeled storage cells. The input chest feeds a horizontal hopper line. Under each position, a filter hopper holds the pattern for one item, a comparator reads that hopper’s inventory level, and a redstone lock controls the hopper that leads to the output chest.

Hoppers pull items from containers above and push them into containers below or into the container they point toward. A redstone signal locks a hopper, stopping that transfer. In a filter cell, the comparator signal changes when the filter hopper receives its matching item. The circuit then unlocks the output path briefly, allowing the matching item to leave for the cell’s chest. Items that do not match remain in the transport line and reach later filters.

“By default, a hopper will suck up any items that fall on it from above, storing them in its five-stack inventory.”

The final container is the overflow chest. It catches items for which you did not install a filter, as well as items that arrive faster than the line can process them. Without that destination, a blocked output or a missed item can stop the entire line.

Materials and planning

Gather materials before building, then decide which item categories deserve permanent filters. The exact number of hoppers depends on the length and schematic of your transport line, but every sorted category needs its own filter cell and output container.

Component Use Planning note
Input chest Receives items from a player, farm or another transport system Place it where it can be reached for testing and clearing jams.
Transport hoppers Carry items past successive filter cells Each hopper must point toward the next stage in the line.
Filter hopper Stores the target pattern for one category One per sorted item or category.
Output chest Stores matching items Label or otherwise distinguish every chest before connecting the line.
Comparator Reads the filter hopper’s inventory level One comparator is required for each standard cell.
Redstone torches and dust Lock and unlock hopper transfers Use the torch-and-dust arrangement required by your chosen schematic.
Repeaters Restore or delay a redstone signal where the design calls for them Not every tileable design needs one in every cell.
Solid blocks Build the frame and carry redstone power Use full blocks wherever the schematic requires a powered surface.
Iron and chests for hoppers Craft the transport and filter hoppers Minecraft’s official recipe uses one chest and five iron ingots for one hopper, making iron the main material cost.

Choose categories before placing blocks

Start with items your farms produce in volume: common building blocks, crops, ores or mob drops. Give each category a dedicated output chest and leave a final chest for everything not represented by a filter. A filter cell is easiest to maintain when it has one clear purpose rather than a vague mixture of related items.

Prepare safe filler items

Each filter hopper has five slots. The four non-target slots need filler items that cannot be confused with sortable materials. Name the fillers in an anvil or use items that will never enter the line, and use the same recognizable set in every cell. A filler that later appears as normal input can make a cell accept the wrong item.

How one filter cell works

A standard cell has four functional layers:

  • Transport layer: the upper hopper line carries the incoming stream.
  • Filter hopper: a branch receives items and holds the target pattern.
  • Detection: a comparator reads the filter hopper’s contents and produces the trigger signal.
  • Output and lock: a lower hopper or directly connected chest receives the matching item, while a redstone torch or equivalent circuit keeps that path locked until the comparator signal changes.

When a target item enters the filter hopper, its inventory level rises enough to change the comparator output. The circuit briefly releases the lower hopper. The target item falls into the output chest, the filter returns to its resting level, and the lock closes again. Non-target items continue along the transport line instead of being diverted.

Build the sorter step by step

  1. Mark the footprint. Reserve a straight run for the transport line, space beneath it for the filter cells, and a final location for the overflow chest. Leave access to the front or top of every hopper so you can inspect and refill it.
  2. Place and label output chests. Put one chest at each planned destination and label it with a sign, item frame or other in-game marker. Keep the labels in the same order as the filters; this makes later diagnosis much faster.
  3. Install the input chest and transport line. Place the input chest at the start of the system. Add the horizontal hopper line above the output row, checking the arrow on each hopper so it points toward the next filter and ultimately toward overflow. A single reversed hopper can strand every item behind it.
  4. Build the first cell. Use the edition-appropriate schematic to branch one position of the line into a filter hopper. Put the output hopper beneath it, pointing toward the assigned chest, or connect the filter hopper directly to the chest if the design permits. Place the comparator so it reads the filter hopper, then add the solid blocks, redstone dust and torch lock shown by the design. Do not load items until the redstone circuit is complete.
  5. Load the filter pattern. Open the filter hopper and place 41 units of the target item in its designated slot. Fill the other four slots with the four safe filler items. Keep the target and filler arrangement identical in every cell so a later inspection is immediately understandable.
  6. Repeat the tile. Extend the transport line and duplicate the filter cell for each category. Check that neighboring redstone circuits are isolated as intended and that each output hopper points to its own chest rather than into the next cell.
  7. Add overflow. Route the end of the transport line into an unsorted or junk chest. Make the overflow chest large enough for the input source, and leave a visible access route so you can see when the system is receiving unrecognized items or falling behind.
  8. Run the controlled test. Before connecting a farm or bulk input, feed one target item, one non-target item, a mixed stack and an item that should reach overflow. Then partially fill an output chest and repeat the test. Confirm that matching items go to the intended chest, non-matching items pass onward, and the line still behaves correctly when an output is nearly full.

Configure and verify the filter hopper

Use the standard 41-plus-four pattern

The common tileable design uses 41 units of the target item and four filler items. The target stack establishes the comparator level used by the lock circuit; the fillers occupy the remaining slots without becoming valid targets. If your schematic specifies a different pattern, follow that schematic rather than mixing patterns between cells.

Keep fillers out of the input stream

Never use a filler that a farm, player or neighboring system might send into the sorter. Renaming filler items is useful because a renamed item is distinct from an ordinary item of the same material for filtering purposes. Store spare fillers in a labeled maintenance chest near the sorter.

Account for stackability

The standard pattern is intended for normally stackable items. Non-stackable items do not behave like a full stack in a hopper, so a basic 41-unit filter is not an appropriate pattern for them. Handle non-stackables manually or use a dedicated design that has been tested for that item type; do not assume that a stackable-item cell will recognize armor, tools or other one-per-slot items correctly.

Throughput, cooldown and edition differences

A hopper sorter is not an unlimited-speed conveyor. The Minecraft Wiki’s current technical tutorial documents a basic sorter transfer rate of about 2.5 items per second and notes an eight-game-tick hopper collection cooldown. Your input source must therefore be buffered or slowed when it can deliver a faster sustained stream.

Edition or condition What to expect Practical response
Java Edition, ordinary operation The basic transfer figure is about 2.5 items per second. Test the complete line with the farm’s real sustained output, not just a handful of items.
Java Edition 1.18 and later, some filter variants A steady 2.5-item-per-second stream can expose redstone-torch flicker burnout in susceptible designs. Use a torch-safe variant, reduce or buffer the feed, and watch the line during the first long run.
Bedrock Edition, full-speed hopper pipe A small percentage of items can pass filters when the pipe is operated at full speed. Slow or buffer the input and test the exact Bedrock schematic before trusting it with a large farm.
Either edition, blocked output A full chest prevents the destination hopper from clearing, allowing items to back up into the line. Keep overflow connected and make output capacity part of your maintenance routine.

The basic concept is suitable for both Java and Bedrock when you use an edition-appropriate schematic, but redstone timing and hopper behavior can differ enough that a design proven in one edition should not be copied blindly into the other.

Choosing an input and layout

Layout choice Strength Trade-off Best use
Compact one-wide tileable line Saves space and can be extended one cell at a time. Places many hoppers and redstone components in a tight service area. Base storage rooms where footprint matters.
Buffered hopper input Smooths bursts before items enter the filters. Requires extra containers and hoppers, increasing iron use and footprint. Farms that produce intermittent surges.
Water-stream feed into a buffer Can reduce direct hopper pressure before the sorting line. Adds water-management complexity and may require a different intake arrangement. Large farms where a direct hopper pipe is difficult to pace.
Longer line with generous overflow Simple to expand and easy to observe during testing. Uses more building space and transport components. Storage rooms expected to gain categories over time.

No single layout is best for every world. A compact line is convenient for a small base, while a buffered or water-fed input is safer when a farm’s bursts approach the sorter’s sustained transfer limit. Choose the footprint before burying the redstone, because access for repairs is more valuable than a few saved blocks.

Testing checklist before automation

Use a temporary chest or a small hand-fed supply and work through these checks:

  • Feed one target item and verify that it reaches only its assigned chest.
  • Feed a different item and confirm that it passes the first filter.
  • Feed a mixed group containing several configured targets and unconfigured items.
  • Inspect every filter hopper after the test to ensure the target and fillers remain in their intended slots.
  • Partially fill an output chest, then repeat the test to check that the remaining items continue to overflow rather than disappearing.
  • Run the system long enough to expose timing problems. A circuit that works for ten items may fail under a sustained farm stream.
  • For Bedrock, test at the intended input speed because full-speed pipes can let a small percentage of items bypass filters.
  • For Java 1.18 or later, observe redstone torches during a sustained run for flicker or burnout.

Troubleshooting common failures

Matching items pass straight to overflow

  • Check that the target item is actually in the filter hopper and that the four filler slots are occupied.
  • Verify that the comparator is reading the filter hopper rather than an adjacent container.
  • Inspect hopper arrows: the branch must receive from the transport line, and the output hopper must point into the intended chest.
  • Reduce the feed temporarily. If sorting resumes when the input is slowed, the line is being overrun and needs buffering or a slower source.

Wrong items enter a chest

  • Look for a filler item that also appears in normal input.
  • Check for a misloaded slot or a filter hopper that contains leftovers from an earlier test.
  • Confirm that the cell’s output hopper is not accidentally receiving from a neighboring branch.

Every cell stops at once

  • Inspect the first transport hopper for a reversed direction or a full inventory.
  • Check whether the overflow chest or an output chest is full and backing up the line.
  • Look for a missing solid block, disconnected redstone dust or a torch that is permanently powering the lock.

A Java line flickers or fails during a long run

Some Java 1.18-and-newer filter variants can burn out their redstone torches when exposed to a steady stream near the basic sorter rate. Stop the input, replace the affected torch if necessary, and then use a design intended to avoid that flicker or buffer the source so the circuit is not held in the failing pattern continuously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bedrock misses items at farm speed

Do not treat a brief hand-fed test as proof of full-speed reliability. Add a buffer, slow the hopper feed or insert a controlled delay, then repeat a sustained test with the exact Bedrock build. Keep overflow active so missed items are recoverable instead of lost.

Maintenance and expansion

Inspect the three points that cause most outages

  • Filter hoppers: verify the target quantity and filler set after any accidental opening or redstone work.
  • Output chests: empty high-volume categories before they become full.
  • Overflow chest: investigate unexpected contents; it may indicate a new item category, a blocked destination or a throughput problem.

Expand one category at a time

To add a category, extend the transport line, duplicate a complete filter cell, load its target pattern, connect a labeled chest and test that cell with both matching and non-matching items. Avoid changing several cells at once; isolating each addition makes a direction or redstone mistake easy to locate.

Keep service access

Do not permanently cover comparators, filter hoppers or the redstone lock with decorative blocks. A sorter is a machine, and the ability to read a hopper, replace a torch or clear a chest is part of its design. Leave a maintenance walkway or removable access panels along the line.

Key design decisions at a glance

  • Use one filter cell and one labeled output chest for each sorted category.
  • Load the standard cell with 41 target units and four safe filler items.
  • Route every unrecognized item to an overflow chest.
  • Design around the documented basic rate of about 2.5 items per second and the eight-game-tick hopper collection cooldown.
  • Buffer or slow high-volume inputs, especially on Bedrock.
  • Watch for torch flicker in susceptible Java 1.18-and-newer variants.
  • Test with a target, a non-target, a mixed input and a nearly full output before connecting a farm.
