The block must stay in place while you brush it, because breaking or moving it can destroy the excavation opportunity. The structure you excavate controls the loot table, including which pottery sherds can appear.

What the Minecraft brush does
The brush is the tool used by Minecraft’s archaeology system. When you brush a suspicious block, the game gradually removes its contents and reveals an object buried inside. Mojang’s update description summarizes the mechanic as: “Brushing Suspicious Sand or Suspicious Gravel with a Brush will extract objects that were buried long ago.”

The block has a subtly different appearance, so examine the terrain around a ruin or structure instead of brushing every nearby block. A normal block gives you ordinary building material; a suspicious block can give you a site-specific archaeology item.
Archaeology is not a general treasure table shared by every location. Each supported structure has its own archaeology loot table. The place where you find the suspicious block therefore affects what can emerge, as well as which pottery sherds are available.

Where suspicious sand and suspicious gravel generate
There are five archaeology sites associated with the Trails & Tales update. Three use suspicious sand and two use suspicious gravel.
| Archaeology site | Structure or location | Suspicious block | Access considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desert well | Desert well | Suspicious sand | Search the desert structure and its surrounding sand. |
| Desert pyramid | Desert temple | Suspicious sand | Inspect the temple, not only the visible exterior. |
| Warm ocean ruin | Warm ocean ruin | Suspicious sand | Excavate underwater and manage breathing, visibility and currents. |
| Cold ocean ruin | Cold ocean ruin | Suspicious gravel | Look for the gravel-based suspicious blocks around the ruin. |
| Trail ruin | Trail ruins | Suspicious gravel | Clear surrounding terrain carefully; the ruins can be partly buried. |
“Desert pyramid” and “desert temple” refer to the same structure in this context. Likewise, warm and cold ocean ruins are separate site categories with different suspicious block types and loot tables.

Suspicious sand locations
Suspicious sand is found at warm ocean ruins, desert pyramids and desert wells. In a desert, it can blend into the surrounding sand and the structure itself. At a warm ocean ruin, underwater lighting, kelp and water movement can make the visual difference harder to spot, so slow down and inspect blocks before mining.
Suspicious gravel locations
Suspicious gravel is found at cold ocean ruins and trail ruins. Do not assume every gravel patch at one of these sites is suspicious. Identify the subtly different block, then brush it in place rather than clearing the area with a shovel or pickaxe.
How to use the brush safely
The interaction is simple, but the order matters. Treat each suspicious block as fragile until the excavation is complete.

- Find an archaeology site. Travel to a desert well, desert pyramid, warm ocean ruin, cold ocean ruin or trail ruin.
- Identify the suspicious block. Confirm whether the block is suspicious sand or suspicious gravel. Ordinary sand and gravel do not contain archaeology loot.
- Stabilize the area. Remove hazards around the block without breaking the block itself. In an ocean ruin, create a safe air supply and control water flow. At trail ruins, clear only enough surrounding terrain to reach the block.
- Keep the block supported. Suspicious blocks can be lost if they fall, are pushed, or are otherwise dislodged before you finish. Avoid actions that cause the block to break or move.
- Hold the brush on the block. Use the brush interaction for your edition and control setup. Continue until the excavation animation finishes and the buried object is released.
- Collect the item. Pick up the revealed object, then inspect nearby suspicious blocks one at a time.
Exact interaction timing and the way the item appears can vary between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition and individual patches. If a tutorial shows a different duration, animation or control prompt, use the instructions for the edition and version running on your world.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy support and positioning matter
Suspicious sand and suspicious gravel are not ordinary decorative blocks. Breaking one before brushing it can remove the buried object instead of yielding archaeology loot. The same risk applies when the block is allowed to fall or is displaced by environmental changes. That is why a careful excavation starts with the surroundings, not with the tool.
Before brushing
- Block water currents near an underwater ruin.
- Make sure you can breathe and see the target block.
- Do not place or remove blocks in a way that causes suspicious sand or gravel to fall.
- Keep hostile mobs away from the excavation area.
- Leave room to collect the revealed item.
During brushing
- Keep the crosshair on the same suspicious block.
- Do not switch to a mining tool and accidentally break the block.
- Watch the block and item output rather than assuming a successful brush happened instantly.
- If the interaction stops, check distance, line of sight and the control binding before touching the block with another tool.
What loot can come from archaeology?
Loot is determined by the archaeology loot table attached to the structure. A suspicious block at a desert well is not guaranteed to produce the same item pool as one at a trail ruin. This is the central rule for predicting drops: identify the site first, then consult the loot table for the exact edition and patch.
Pottery sherds are the signature archaeology collectible. Mojang’s archaeology announcement states: “A total of 20 sherds have been distributed between the 5 Archaeology sites: Desert Wells, Desert Temples, Cold Ocean Ruins, Warm Ocean Ruins, and Trail Ruins.” The statement establishes twenty sherds across five sites; it does not mean that every site contains all twenty or that every suspicious block produces a sherd.
Pottery sherds
Each sherd represents one part of the decorated-pot pattern system. Because sherd pools are tied to site tables, the location you choose affects which designs you can collect. If you are seeking a particular sherd, repeatedly brushing a convenient structure without checking its table may never produce the design you need.

Other site-specific items
Archaeology tables also contain non-sherd items. Some are ordinary outcomes, while trail ruins have documented rare outcomes in Java 1.20 reference data. The exact item names, weights and probabilities are version-sensitive, so a complete drop list should always identify Java or Bedrock and the exact patch. Do not apply a Java 1.20 table to a Bedrock world or to a later update without verification.
Suspicious sand versus suspicious gravel
The two blocks use the same basic brushing mechanic, but they differ in where you find them and which structure table governs their loot.
| Comparison | Suspicious sand | Suspicious gravel |
|---|---|---|
| Sites | Warm ocean ruins, desert pyramids and desert wells | Cold ocean ruins and trail ruins |
| Typical setting | Deserts or warm underwater ruins | Cold underwater ruins or partly buried trail ruins |
| Tool action | Brush while supported and stationary | Brush while supported and stationary |
| Loot control | Structure-specific archaeology table | Structure-specific archaeology table |
| Main failure risk | Breaking, falling or dislodging the sand before excavation | Breaking, falling or dislodging the gravel before excavation |
The block name alone does not tell you the item. A suspicious gravel block at a trail ruin and one at a cold ocean ruin can have different possible results because their structures use different tables.
Choosing the best site for your goal
If you want the simplest first excavation
A desert site avoids underwater breathing problems. Desert wells and desert pyramids both use suspicious sand, so you can concentrate on recognizing the block and protecting it from falling. A pyramid is a larger structure and may require more careful exploration; a well is smaller but can be easier to miss in a broad desert.
If you want underwater archaeology
Warm ocean ruins provide suspicious sand, while cold ocean ruins provide suspicious gravel. Prepare for water before brushing: establish an air source, improve visibility and prevent currents from carrying you away from the target. Underwater excavation is slower to set up, but it gives you access to a different structure category and loot table.

If you want trail-ruin loot
Trail ruins use suspicious gravel and can be partly hidden by terrain. Excavating the surrounding area is useful, but do it in controlled stages. A large clearance with a shovel can destroy the very blocks you are trying to brush.

Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition can differ in generation details, loot tables and the way mechanics are presented. Patch updates can also change structure generation or table contents. The five-site distribution and the sand-versus-gravel locations describe the archaeology system broadly, but they are not a substitute for an edition-specific reference when you need exact probabilities.

- The edition: Java or Bedrock.
- The game version and patch, such as Java 1.20 or a later release.
- The structure name used by that edition’s reference data.
- Whether the table lists ordinary outcomes, rare outcomes or both.
- Whether the table describes one suspicious block, one structure or an entire generation attempt.
If a guide gives percentages without those qualifications, treat the numbers cautiously. A table copied from Java 1.20 may describe distinct archaeology loot tables and rare trail-ruin outcomes that do not match another edition or patch.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Breaking the block before brushing
If you mined suspicious sand or gravel as though it were ordinary terrain, the buried object may be lost. There is no reliable way to recover an item that was destroyed by breaking the block. On future sites, switch to the brush as soon as you identify the suspicious texture.
Letting the block fall
Gravity and environmental movement are major hazards for sand and gravel. Stabilize the area before interacting, and avoid removing a supporting block underneath a suspicious block. If it has already fallen or disappeared, search the nearby area for the dropped item; if no item exists, the excavation may have been lost.

Brushing the wrong block
Normal sand and gravel do not use archaeology loot tables. If nothing happens, verify the block type and location instead of holding the brush longer. You may be looking at ordinary terrain, or at a structure that does not contain that suspicious block.
Expecting every site to drop every sherd
The twenty sherds are distributed across five sites. A single desert well, ruin or trail ruin is not a complete collection. Use the site-specific pool to plan where to search for a design you still need.
Using an out-of-date table
When an item seems absent from a table, check the edition and patch first. Structure generation and loot references can diverge, and a table without a version label is not precise enough for probability planning.
A practical archaeology checklist
- Carry a brush and enough general supplies for the environment.
- Identify the site before predicting loot.
- Confirm whether the suspicious block is sand or gravel.
- Secure the block against gravity, water and accidental mining.
- Brush one block at a time until the excavation completes.
- Collect each revealed object before moving on.
- Record the site and edition if you are tracking pottery sherds.
- Use an edition- and patch-specific table for exact drops or probabilities.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use any tool to excavate suspicious blocks?
No. The archaeology action is performed with a brush. Breaking the block with a mining tool can remove the opportunity to extract its buried object.
Is suspicious sand found in every desert?
No. Search the listed archaeology structures: desert wells and desert pyramids. Ordinary desert sand is not automatically suspicious.

Which sites use suspicious gravel?
Cold ocean ruins and trail ruins use suspicious gravel.
How many pottery sherds were introduced across the archaeology sites?
Mojang announced twenty sherds distributed across five sites: desert wells, desert temples, cold ocean ruins, warm ocean ruins and trail ruins.
Why did I receive a different item from another player?
The structure’s archaeology loot table controls the possible result, and Java/Bedrock editions or patches can use different generation details. Compare the site, edition and version before comparing drops.
