The pair must be close enough to recognize one another, and several species need an extra prerequisite such as taming, a bucket, or a suitable habitat. The complete food list and the exceptions are below, including animals that produce eggs, frogspawn, or a mule instead of an ordinary baby.

How breeding works
Breeding is a controlled interaction, not an automatic result of leaving food in an enclosure. Hold the correct breeding item and use it directly on each adult. Hearts indicate love mode; when two compatible adults are close enough, they produce their species’ offspring or other documented result.

The basic rule
- Find two adult mobs of a breedable species.
- Make sure both adults meet any prerequisite, such as taming.
- Give each adult the exact breeding item listed in the table below. One item must be applied to each mob; food dropped on the ground generally does not start breeding.
- Keep the pair near one another until love mode can complete.
Most breeding is within one species. Variants of the same species can breed with one another, so a pair does not have to look identical. The major cross-species exception is a horse and a donkey, which produce a mule.
Breeding is different from luring, healing, or taming
An item can attract an animal without being a breeding item. A lure, a healing item, or a food that another species accepts will not activate love mode. Cats, wolves, horses, donkeys, and llamas must be tamed before their breeding item can be used for reproduction. An ocelot is a separate case: it is not a tamed cat, and it must be fed as an ocelot.

Not every result is a live baby
Most pairs create a live young mob. Turtles lay turtle eggs on a suitable home beach, frogs produce frogspawn, and sniffers produce an egg that hatches into a snifflet over time. A horse-donkey pairing creates a mule. Plan the enclosure around the result rather than assuming a baby will appear immediately beside the adults.
Complete Minecraft breeding food table
Use this as the authoritative quick reference for the species covered by this guide. “Feed two adults” means one valid breeding item per adult unless a special condition is stated.
| Animal | Breeding food | Requirement or important note |
|---|---|---|
| Armadillo | Spider eye | Feed two adults. |
| Axolotl | Bucket of tropical fish | The bucket is required; loose tropical fish does not work. |
| Bee | Any flower | Feed two bees. |
| Camel | Cactus | Feed two adults. |
| Cat | Raw cod or raw salmon | The cat must be tamed first. |
| Chicken | Any accepted seed | Accepted examples include wheat, beetroot, melon, pumpkin, and torchflower seeds where supported by the game version. |
| Cow | Wheat | The same item works for mooshrooms. |
| Donkey | Golden carrot or golden apple | The donkey must be tamed; pairing it with a horse produces a mule. |
| Fox | Sweet berries or glow berries | Feed two adult foxes. |
| Frog | Slimeball | The result is frogspawn rather than a live baby. |
| Goat | Wheat | Feed two adults. |
| Hoglin | Crimson fungus | This hostile Nether mob is breedable. |
| Horse | Golden carrot or golden apple | The horse must be tamed; pairing it with a donkey produces a mule. |
| Llama | Hay bale | The llama must be tamed. |
| Mooshroom | Wheat | The same item works for cows. |
| Ocelot | Raw cod or raw salmon | Feed an ocelot directly; do not substitute a tamed cat for this entry. |
| Panda | Bamboo | Player feeding is still required, and nearby bamboo conditions affect breeding. |
| Pig | Carrot, potato, or beetroot | Any one of the three listed foods works. |
| Rabbit | Carrot, golden carrot, or dandelion | Any one of the listed foods works. |
| Sheep | Wheat | Sheep also eat grass and certain grass blocks to regrow wool. |
| Sniffer | Torchflower seeds | The result is an egg that hatches into a snifflet. |
| Strider | Warped fungus | The same item also lures striders. |
| Turtle | Seagrass | The result is turtle eggs laid on a suitable home beach. |
| Wolf | Meat | The wolf must be tamed; the accepted meat set varies by edition and version. |
Build a pen that makes breeding reliable
A contained pen is more dependable than an open pasture. In a large area, adults can wander apart before they detect one another in love mode, and a player can lose track of which animals have already been fed.
Six-step pen setup
- Choose a safe location. For ordinary animals, use a fenced area with a gate. For Nether mobs or species with habitat needs, make the enclosure appropriate to that environment before moving the adults.
- Make the pen large enough for adults and offspring. A cramped pen makes it difficult to target the correct mob and can cause newly produced animals to block access to the parents.
- Use a controlled entrance. A gate or similarly managed opening prevents adults from escaping while you bring in the second parent.
- Move animals with leads where possible. The breeding item generally doubles as a lure, so hold it while guiding each adult through the entrance.
- Feed inside the pen. Apply the item directly to both adults and watch for the love-mode hearts. Do not throw the food on the floor and wait for an automatic result.
- Protect the output. Keep eggs, frogspawn, or a sniffer egg in the conditions they need to complete their development, and leave enough room for a live offspring to appear.
Keep the breeding pair identifiable
When a pen contains many adults, separate two parents into a smaller section before feeding. This prevents accidentally feeding a third mob, helps you see the hearts, and makes it easier to spot a pair that has not met a prerequisite.

Special prerequisites and pairings
Tamed animals
Five entries require taming before breeding: cats, wolves, horses, donkeys, and llamas. If using the listed food produces no hearts, confirm that both adults belong to you rather than assuming the item is wrong. A wild ocelot is not interchangeable with a tamed cat, so use the ocelot procedure for that species.
Axolotl bucket requirement
Axolotls require a bucket of tropical fish. The loose tropical-fish item is not an equivalent substitute. This is a common inventory mistake because the item name sounds close to the required object; check that the held item is the bucketed form before trying again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPanda habitat check
Pandas need player feeding with bamboo, and nearby bamboo conditions matter. If two adult pandas show no response, inspect the enclosure for the required bamboo surroundings instead of repeatedly using more food. Keep the bamboo area close to the pair and make sure both adults can remain in the same contained space.
Turtles and their home beach
Seagrass starts the turtle breeding interaction, but the result is a clutch of turtle eggs on a suitable home beach. A general animal pen is not enough if it does not provide the turtles’ beach conditions. Prepare the beach first, then watch the sand area for eggs rather than searching for a live baby beside the adults.
Rank #3
Frogs and frogspawn
Frog breeding ends with frogspawn. Treat the water or egg area as part of the enclosure: after the adults complete the interaction, look for the frogspawn block and give it room to progress instead of expecting an immediately spawned frog.
Sniffers and their eggs
Sniffers use torchflower seeds and produce an egg. Leave the egg in place while it hatches into a snifflet. A successful breeding interaction therefore may look “unfinished” until the egg’s development completes.
Horse, donkey, and mule breeding
Horses and donkeys share the same golden-carrot or golden-apple breeding items, but the pair determines the result. Two compatible horses produce a horse, two compatible donkeys produce a donkey, and one horse plus one donkey produces a mule. The mule is the intentional cross-species exception; do not expect other animal types to cross-breed.
Hostile and Nether species
Hoglins are hostile but breedable with crimson fungus, and striders respond to warped fungus. Build secure Nether pens, keep an escape route closed while feeding, and use the fungus as a held item so you can control movement and apply it directly.

| Food source | Examples | Typical preparation | Output to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farm crops and seeds | Wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, accepted seeds, cactus, and torchflower seeds | Maintain a crop plot and reserve a stack for direct feeding. | Mostly live offspring; sniffers produce an egg. |
| Flowers and berries | Flowers, sweet berries, and glow berries | Keep the plants accessible and carry the exact item rather than relying on dropped food. | Live bees or foxes. |
| Fish and aquatic items | Raw cod, raw salmon, seagrass, and a bucket of tropical fish | Prepare fishing or aquatic collection first; remember that the axolotl item must be bucketed. | Live cats, ocelots, and axolotls; turtles produce eggs. |
| Fungi | Crimson fungus and warped fungus | Use a protected Nether enclosure so the adults cannot wander into danger. | Live hoglins or striders. |
| Rare or prepared items | Spider eyes, golden carrots, golden apples, hay bales, slimeballs, and meat | Check the inventory before entering the pen; taming or a special habitat may be the real bottleneck. | Live armadillos, horses, donkeys, llamas, frogs, and wolves, with the documented mule exception. |
Java version and variant notes
Chicken variants in Java Snapshot 25w06a
Mojang’s Java Snapshot 25w06a, published February 5, 2025, added warm and cold chicken variants and renamed the existing chicken variant temperate. The snapshot describes variant selection by biome category. It also documents three egg outcomes: blue eggs hatch cold chickens, brown eggs hatch warm chickens, and ordinary eggs hatch the temperate variant.
Those chicken and egg details are snapshot-specific. If you are playing a later full release, a different snapshot, or Bedrock Edition, verify that your version has the same variant system before designing a farm around colored eggs.
Dry grass and sheep in that snapshot
The same Java snapshot documents short dry grass and tall dry grass as edible by sheep for wool regrowth. This is separate from breeding: wheat is still the breeding item in the table, while grass consumption restores wool. Because the dry-grass behavior is tied to that Java snapshot, label it when sharing a farm design and do not assume every edition or release has it.

Edition differences
Java and Bedrock can differ in accepted foods, variant behavior, and the details of newly added mobs. When a step fails despite matching the table, check the edition and exact release first. The wolf entry is explicitly version-sensitive, and the chicken variant notes above apply to the named Java snapshot rather than universally to Minecraft.

| No hearts after feeding | Wrong item or an unmet prerequisite | Compare the held item with the table, confirm both mobs are adults, and verify taming for cats, wolves, horses, donkeys, or llamas. |
| The animal follows you but does not breed | The item is a lure rather than the breeding item | Use the species’ exact breeding item and apply it directly to the adult. |

| Food on the floor has no effect | Breeding is generally triggered by direct player feeding | Pick the item up and use it on each adult instead of dropping it. |
| Eggs or frogspawn are missing | The result was expected in the wrong place or the habitat is unsuitable | For turtles, provide the home beach; for frogs, inspect the area where frogspawn should form; for sniffers, look for the egg rather than a live baby. |
| Pandas refuse to breed | Nearby bamboo conditions are not met | Keep bamboo close to the pair and ensure both adults remain in the prepared enclosure. |
| An axolotl refuses the item | Loose tropical fish was used | Replace it with a bucket of tropical fish. |
| Parents wander apart | The enclosure is too open | Use fences, a gate, and a smaller breeding section; leads help position adults before feeding. |
| The expected variant does not appear | Edition or release behavior differs | Check whether you are on Java Snapshot 25w06a, a later Java release, or Bedrock, and treat snapshot-specific chicken rules as conditional. |
Planning a breeding farm
For food and leather production
Start with species whose breeding item comes from routine crop farming. A fenced pen, a dedicated feed chest, and a gate make repeated cycles predictable. Separate adult stock from offspring when the enclosure becomes crowded so you can continue targeting the parents.
For wool and renewable materials
Sheep require wheat for breeding, while their wool-regrowth food behavior is separate. Keep a grass or approved grass-block area in the pen and maintain a wheat supply for the breeding cycle. Do not mistake a sheep eating grass for a breeding event.
For transport and utility
Horse, donkey, llama, and wolf projects begin with taming. Complete that prerequisite before building a breeding schedule, and reserve the appropriate golden item, hay bale, or meat. If the goal is a mule, place one tamed horse and one tamed donkey together rather than two of the same species.
For novelty or rare mobs
Armadillos, axolotls, pandas, sniffers, turtles, and frogs demand more planning than a standard crop-fed pen. Stock the uncommon item first, then build the habitat or egg area before moving adults. This avoids a successful love-mode interaction producing an egg or frogspawn in a location where it cannot develop.
One-pass checklist
- Identify the exact species; distinguish cats from ocelots and cows from mooshrooms.
- Confirm both mobs are adults and, where required, tamed.
- Bring the precise breeding item, not merely a food that the mob can eat or follow.
- For axolotls, use a bucket of tropical fish.
- For pandas, prepare nearby bamboo conditions.
- For turtles, provide a suitable home beach; for frogs and sniffers, prepare for frogspawn or an egg.
- Use a fenced pen, gate, and leads to keep adults close.
- Feed each adult directly and look for hearts.
- Expect a mule only from a horse-donkey pairing; same-species variants can otherwise breed together.
- Label farms with the Minecraft edition and release, especially when using Java Snapshot 25w06a chicken or dry-grass behavior.
Final answer
Every breedable mob has a defined breeding item, and the fastest reliable method is always the same: contain two adult, compatible parents, satisfy any taming or habitat requirement, and feed each one directly. The exceptions are what make a universal farm fail—bucketed fish for axolotls, tamed status for several domestic mobs, bamboo conditions for pandas, eggs or frogspawn for some species, and the horse-donkey mule pairing. Use the table first, then build the pen around the result your edition and version actually supports.
