Minecraft Biomes Guide: Every Biome and What You Can Find

Minecraft biomes are regions with distinct terrain, climate, plants, mobs, sounds, lighting and generation rules. This guide indexes the documented biomes by dimension and explains the blocks, wildlife, structures and practical resources associated with each one. Microsoft’s 2025 Bedrock documentation lists 54 Overworld biome types, five Nether types and one End type; Java Edition uses a different End taxonomy and has a few edition-specific differences.

What a Minecraft biome changes

A biome is more than a color palette. Minecraft defines it as a region with its own geography, plants, mobs and other characteristics. Temperature, humidity, erosion and weirdness help determine which biome is selected. The biome then influences precipitation, atmospheric lighting, background music and which world features and mobs are appropriate.

World generation happens in stages. A seed first produces terrain, the biome pass assigns climate and surface rules, the structure pass places eligible structures, the feature pass adds trees, plants, ores, springs and coral, and the final pass handles mob spawning. Therefore, a biome name is not a promise that every listed structure, animal or resource will appear in every seed, version or edition.

How many biomes are there?

Counts depend on edition and documentation date. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation published in 2025 records the following totals:

Dimension Bedrock documentation Java Edition note
Overworld 54 biome types Java shares most names, but some entries and behaviors are edition-specific.
Nether 5 biome types The same five major Nether biome categories are used.
End 1 documented biome type Java divides the outer End into highlands, midlands, barrens and small islands in addition to the central End.

These are versioned documentation counts, not a permanent universal total. New releases can add, rename or change generation rules.

The End

The End in Bedrock Edition

Bedrock documentation records one End biome type: The End. Its central island contains the obsidian pillars and Ender Dragon arena. The biome is the entry point for the main End encounter and the starting point for later outer-island exploration.

End highlands in Java Edition

Java’s outer End includes highland terrain where chorus plants and End cities can generate. These islands are the principal destination for chorus and city exploration after the central dragon arena.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

End midlands in Java Edition

End midlands are transitional outer-island terrain around the highlands. They connect the central End experience to more specialized outer-island landscapes and can serve as staging ground during long crossings.

End barrens in Java Edition

End barrens are narrow outer edges with little land area. They are less useful for building but matter when mapping the full Java End biome taxonomy.

Small End islands in Java Edition

Small End islands are separated outer islands. They are useful for chorus gathering and for continuing searches for End-city terrain, but their limited size makes travel and safe shelter more challenging.

Best biomes for common goals

Goal Strong choices Reason
Early wood and food Forest, plains, taiga Forests provide dependable logs, while plains and taiga offer open ground, passive animals or spruce resources.
Villages Plains, savanna, desert These biomes are associated with common village locations, though generation is seed-dependent.
Glass and sandstone Desert, beach Both provide convenient access to sand; deserts also add sandstone, cacti and dead bushes.
Colored building blocks Badlands, wooded badlands, eroded badlands Terracotta is exposed in large quantities and comes in a range of natural colors.
Coral and tropical fish Warm ocean Warm oceans are the documented coral-reef biome and contain dolphins, pufferfish and tropical fish.
Lush decoration Lush caves, flower forest, cherry grove These provide concentrated sources of moss and cave plants, varied flowers, or cherry trees and pink petals.
Bamboo materials Bamboo jungle Dense bamboo growth and pandas make this the most direct natural source.
Nether wood Crimson forest, warped forest Crimson and warped fungi ecosystems provide the two Nether wood families.
Quiet hostile-mob-free settlement Mushroom fields Hostile mob spawning is unusually limited on mycelium islands.
Ancient-city exploration Deep dark Ancient-city possibilities are tied to the sculk-covered deep underground biome.

Edition, seed and version cautions

  • Java and Bedrock share most biome names but do not have identical taxonomies. The clearest documented difference is the End: Bedrock records one End type, while Java separates outer-island sub-biomes.
  • Structures such as villages, woodland mansions, desert structures, jungle temples, witch huts, ancient cities and End cities are possible generation outcomes, not guarantees for every area carrying that biome name.
  • Mob lists describe distinctive or suitable wildlife, not an exclusive population. Spawn rules also depend on light, blocks, difficulty, nearby terrain and edition.
  • Feature placement is version-sensitive. Trees, plants, flowers, ores, springs and coral are applied according to biome rules during generation, so release changes can alter where a resource appears.
  • When planning an exploration checklist, record the edition and game version first. A biome count or Java-only End label should not be applied to a different edition without checking its current documentation.
