Minecraft bells cannot be crafted. They generate naturally in villages, usually near the settlement’s middle, and can sometimes be obtained from armourers, toolsmiths or weaponsmiths. A pickaxe lets you mine a bell without destroying it.

Bells are meeting points and alarms. Ringing one sends villagers into nearby homes, while Java Edition can apply Glowing to nearby raid mobs. Java and Bedrock Edition also differ in how bells behave when a raid begins, so the edition-specific details matter.

How to obtain a bell
Minecraft’s official Taking Inventory: Bell article says: “Bells aren’t craftable – instead, they’re generated naturally in all village variants, usually pretty close to the middle of the settlement.” That makes village exploration the dependable acquisition method.
Find the village meeting area
- Locate a naturally generated village.
- Search the settlement’s central or busiest-looking area first. A bell is usually close to the middle, but village layouts vary.
- Look for a freestanding block that produces a ringing sound and visibly sways when interacted with.
If the bell is difficult to spot, check paths and open spaces between houses rather than searching only inside buildings. The bell is commonly associated with the village’s meeting area.

Mine it safely
Use a pickaxe to break the bell. The official guidance specifically identifies a pickaxe as necessary for mining one without destroying it. After it drops, you can place it elsewhere or keep it as a spare.
Trade for another bell
Armourers, toolsmiths and weaponsmiths can sometimes offer a bell in their trades. Availability is not guaranteed, and the cited official material does not establish a universal emerald price. Treat any displayed price as the offer for that villager and edition rather than a fixed game-wide cost.

Trading is useful when you want to leave the original village alarm in place while acquiring a second bell for a base, a raid-defense position or a technical build.
What a bell does in normal village play
It acts as a meeting point
A claimed bell can serve as a village gathering site. Villagers use claimed gathering sites, so the block is more than decoration: it provides a recognizable place for village activity.
Ring it to call villagers to safety
Interacting with a bell produces its ringing sound and a visible sway. The official Bedrock Village & Pillage notes state: “When rung, all villagers will run into their houses.” Java’s cited snapshot notes describe villagers running into a random nearby home and hiding for a short time.

This makes a bell useful before a dangerous night, while preparing a village for an attack, or when you need villagers indoors before moving through the settlement. The bell does not create a raid by itself.
Place it on different faces
Bells can be attached to the side, floor or ceiling of blocks. Choose the mounting surface according to the approach you want for your village: a central floor placement is easy to reach, while a wall or ceiling position can keep the meeting point out of the way.
Activate it without direct interaction
Redstone activation is documented for bells. The cited mechanics reference also records projectile and dropped-item activation in Bedrock. These activation details are version-sensitive, so confirm the behavior against the release you are playing before building a timing-dependent contraption.
How bells relate to raids
Bad Omen starts the raid
Entering a village while carrying Bad Omen triggers a raid. The bell is not the trigger; it is an alarm and information tool used after villagers are threatened.
Defending the village grants a reward
The official Bedrock Village & Pillage notes say that successfully defending the village grants Hero of the Village. That status provides steep trade discounts, making a defended settlement valuable for later villager trading.

Use the bell as an alarm
Once danger is present, ring the bell to send villagers toward shelter. In a manually prepared village, this gives you a quick way to start the villagers’ hiding response rather than trying to move each villager individually.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences
The same block has different raid behavior in the two editions. The following comparison uses the cited Java mechanics reference, Java snapshot notes and official Bedrock notes.
| Behavior | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Villager shelter response | Villagers run into a random nearby home and hide for a short time when the bell is rung. | Official notes say all villagers run into their houses when the bell is rung. |
| Bell behavior when a raid starts | When the first raid wave appears, at least one villager may rush to ring the central bell if close enough. | Bells in the corresponding village ring automatically when the raid starts. |
| Ringing near raid mobs | Can apply Glowing to raid mobs within the relevant range and produce a resonating sound. | The cited material does not establish the same Glowing behavior. |
| Village-center implications | A claimed bell can participate in village-center calculations; exact behavior depends on the current version. | A claimed bell can participate in village-center calculations; exact behavior depends on the current version. |
Java: locating attackers with Glowing
In Java Edition, ringing a bell while raid mobs are within the relevant range can apply Glowing to those mobs. The effect helps expose attackers through walls, and the resonating sound provides an additional warning that the bell has detected nearby raiders.
Use this when a wave appears to have stalled or when terrain, buildings or darkness make visual searching difficult. It is an edition-specific behavior; do not assume the same effect exists in Bedrock.

In Bedrock Edition, the corresponding village bells ring automatically when the raid starts. You still can ring a bell yourself to make villagers run home, but the raid-start alarm does not depend on a villager reaching the bell.

Java: a villager may ring first
In the cited Java behavior, the first raid wave can prompt at least one nearby villager to rush to the central bell. The condition includes proximity, so a distant or poorly connected settlement may not produce the behavior you expect.
Step-by-step raid defense with a bell
- Secure the village layout. Check that villagers have nearby homes and that you can reach the bell quickly.
- Control Bad Omen. Entering the village with Bad Omen is what starts the raid, not ringing the bell.
- Ring before searching. Use the bell to send villagers into shelter. In Java, watch and listen for the raid-mob Glowing response when attackers are within range.
- Search systematically. If the wave is not visible, check behind houses, terrain changes and enclosed spaces. In Java, ring again when you believe raiders are nearby but hidden.
- Keep the bell accessible. A central position lets you activate it quickly, but do not block your own movement while defending.
- Finish the wave and later waves. After the village is successfully defended, Hero of the Village grants the documented trade discounts.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bell placement and village-center mechanics
Village mechanics are more technical than the visible meeting area. The cited village-mechanics reference says that a subchunk containing a claimed bed, bell or job-site block can count as a village center, and that villagers use claimed gathering sites.
Why moving a bell can matter
Adding or moving a bell may change where villagers gather and which point is treated as the village center for some village and raid calculations. A bell relocated by only a short distance can therefore have consequences beyond decoration if your build depends on precise village behavior.
Best Value
Practical guidance for technical builds
- Place the bell deliberately instead of treating every bell as a visual ornament.
- Track which bell villagers have claimed as a gathering site.
- When changing a farm or raid-defense layout, recheck the village center after moving beds, bells or job-site blocks.
- Verify technical behavior against the exact edition and current version, because the mechanics reference qualifies these interactions by version.
Common problems and fixes
“I cannot craft a bell”
That is expected. Search a generated village or check qualifying armourer, toolsmith and weaponsmith trades instead of looking for a crafting recipe.
“Breaking the bell destroyed it”
Use a pickaxe. The official guidance specifies that tool for mining a bell without destroying it.
“The villagers did not all hide where I expected”
Edition behavior differs. Java villagers may choose a random nearby home and hide for a short time; Bedrock’s official wording says villagers run into their houses. Make sure homes are nearby and usable, and remember that the village layout affects the response.
“The bell did not reveal raiders”
The Glowing raid-mob behavior is documented for Java Edition. Do not expect an identical result in Bedrock. In Java, the mobs must also be within the relevant range.
“The bell changed my farm’s behavior”
A claimed bell can influence gathering-site and village-center logic. Recheck the placement of bells, beds and job-site blocks whenever a village or raid build starts behaving differently.
Best uses for spare bells
- Village alarm: Keep one in the settlement’s meeting area so villagers can be sent home quickly.
- Java raid locator: Place an accessible bell where you can ring it while searching for hidden raid mobs.
- Remote settlement marker: A bell’s sound and visible sway make it a practical focal point for a village layout.
- Mechanics testing: Use a separate bell when experimenting with village-center behavior so you do not disturb the bell that villagers already use.
What to remember
The essential route is simple: find a village, mine its bell with a pickaxe, or check the specified villager professions for a possible trade. Ringing sends villagers toward shelter, while raid behavior depends on edition. Bad Omen starts the raid; the bell does not. Java can use ringing to reveal nearby raid mobs with Glowing, Bedrock rings its village bells automatically when a raid starts, and a claimed bell can influence village-center logic. Treat version-sensitive mechanics accordingly, especially in technical farms.
