Allays are peaceful flying helpers that collect dropped copies of an item you give them. Find them in cages at pillager outposts or in jail cells in woodland mansions, assign an item with the use interaction, and they will follow you while searching nearby loaded chunks. They can deliver items to you or, temporarily, to a note block. You cannot tame an Allay in the usual animal sense, and it does not pull items from chests.

What an Allay does
An Allay is a small, friendly flying mob built for gathering loose items. Give it one item through the normal use interaction and it treats that item as its target. It then looks for dropped items of the same type, picks them up, and brings the matching items back to the player who assigned it.

The item you hand over is not duplicated. It acts as the pattern the Allay uses for its search. For example, giving it one cobblestone makes it look for dropped cobblestone, not for every block and not for cobblestone inside storage. An Allay has one inventory slot for its carried stack in addition to the item being used as its target.
Use an empty hand on the Allay to take back the assignment item. That interaction ends the current assignment, so the mob no longer has that item as its collection target. Because Allays are peaceful rather than combat mobs, their value comes from transport and collection systems, not fighting.

Where Allays spawn
Allays generate in two kinds of structures. Neither structure guarantees them: each applicable location has a 50% chance to generate Allays, and a successful location generally contains one to three.
| Structure | Where to search | Generation chance and group size |
|---|---|---|
| Pillager outpost | Dark-oak cages near the outpost | 50% chance at an applicable cage; usually one to three Allays |
| Woodland mansion | Jail cells inside the mansion | 50% chance at an applicable cell; usually one to three Allays |
At an outpost, inspect the dark-oak cages around the main structure rather than assuming the towers themselves contain the mobs. In a woodland mansion, check the rooms that function as jail cells. Since generation is probabilistic, finding an outpost or mansion does not prove that Allays will be present; you may need to search another structure of the same type.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSecure the mob before moving it
Allays can wander and are vulnerable to ordinary environmental hazards. Close the cage or cell, build a temporary enclosure, or attach a lead before attempting a long move. A safe holding area prevents the Allay from drifting away while you prepare a route, boat, portal, or other transport method.

How to assign an item and start collecting
The basic collection loop is simple, but its range and timing determine whether a farm works reliably.
- Choose the target item. Decide exactly which dropped item you want collected. The Allay searches for copies of that item type.
- Give it one example. With the item in your hand, use the interaction on the Allay. It keeps that example as its assignment and begins following you.
- Drop matching items. Throw the same item onto the ground in loaded chunks. The Allay retrieves dropped copies; it does not withdraw items from chests, barrels, hoppers, or other storage.
- Stay close enough. The documented following range is up to 64 blocks from its player, while its item search reaches up to 32 blocks. If you move beyond the following range or unload the area, collection can stop until you return.
- Allow for its delivery cycle. After each delivery, the Allay waits about three seconds before searching again. A stream of items therefore arrives in batches rather than continuously.
- Recover the assignment item when needed. Use an empty hand on the Allay. This takes back the item and ends that collection assignment.
Keep the assigned item available while transporting the mob and avoid taking it back until the Allay is in its intended work area. If an Allay appears idle, first check that the target items are genuinely dropped on the ground, within the search radius, and in a loaded area.
Collection ranges, loading, and timing
| Mechanic | Value | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum following range | 64 blocks | Stay within this distance if you expect the Allay to continue tracking you. |
| Item-search range | 32 blocks | Place dropped targets close enough for the Allay to detect them. |
| Delay after a delivery | 3 seconds | Expect a pause before the next search. |
| Note-block trigger distance | 16 blocks | An audible note block in this range can redirect a delivering Allay. |
| Note-block focus duration | 30 seconds | The Allay delivers to that note block before targeting its player again. |
These distances are operating limits, not guarantees that every item will be found at the outer edge. A compact build with short travel paths is more dependable than a layout that places targets exactly at the maximum radius. Keep the relevant chunks loaded, avoid walls or terrain that separate the mob from the item stream, and account for the three-second pause when estimating throughput.

Delivering to a note block
An Allay normally brings collected items back to its player. A note block provides a temporary alternative destination. If the Allay hears a note block play within 16 blocks while it is delivering, it switches its delivery target to that note block. It searches around the note block and returns items there for 30 seconds, after which it targets the player again.
Build a basic note-block station
- Place the note block at the point where you want deliveries to arrive.
- Put a hopper or another collection point beneath or beside it so delivered items can enter your storage design.
- Position the dropped-item source inside the Allay’s 32-block search area and keep the Allay within the note block’s 16-block trigger distance when you want a handoff.
- Play the note block while the Allay is carrying out a delivery. A vibration particle indicates that the note block has captured its attention.
- Let the Allay work for the 30-second focus period, then play the note block again when you need to recapture it.
The note block does not turn an Allay into a permanent chest sorter. It changes where the mob deposits items for a limited period. Since the Allay still collects only dropped items, the input side of the build must expose items to the world rather than leaving them inside storage.
Prevent accidental redirection
Nearby note blocks can capture the wrong Allay. Keep separate stations physically separated and isolate sound where practical. Wool placed between an Allay and a note block can block the sound interaction, which is useful when one collection area contains several stations. If an Allay suddenly leaves a player-facing route, inspect nearby note blocks before rebuilding the item stream.

Player-following collection versus a note-block station
| Consideration | Following the player | Note-block station |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery destination | The player who assigned the item | The note block that captured its attention for 30 seconds |
| Relevant operating distance | Up to 64 blocks of following; items searched up to 32 blocks away | Note block must be within 16 blocks to redirect delivery; item searches still use the Allay’s search behavior around that destination |
| Storage integration | Items return to the player | A hopper or other collection point can be placed at the note block |
| Main interruption risk | Leaving the 64-block following range or unloading the area | Another audible note block redirecting the Allay |
| Best use | Portable gathering while exploring, mining, or moving between work sites | A fixed collection area or sorting build with controlled sound |
Use player-following mode when you want a mobile helper and do not need automatic storage. Use a note-block station when the same Allay should repeatedly deliver to a known point. In a multi-Allay build, assign different item types and give each delivery zone its own sound control; otherwise one note block can attract a mob assigned to another stream.

Allay duplication is a separate mechanic from collection. It requires a jukebox, a music record, and an amethyst shard. Mojang added the feature to Java Edition in version 1.19.1. The release notes state that Allays dance to a record playing in a jukebox and duplicate when handed an amethyst shard while dancing. The duplication cooldown is five minutes.
- Bring an Allay to a jukebox. Use an enclosure or lead so it cannot drift away during the setup.
- Insert and play a music record. Wait until the Allay visibly dances to the jukebox.
- Give it an amethyst shard. Use the shard on the dancing Allay. The shard is consumed.
- Collect the new Allay. The original splits into two Allays. Both can then be assigned items independently.
- Wait for the cooldown. The pair shares a five-minute cooldown before another duplication can occur.
Minecraft writer Sofia Dankis described the sequence in a June 28, 2022 article: “The allay will consume the shard and split in two. Voila! You now have two allays!” That wording reflects the practical result: one shard produces the second mob and is not returned.

Edition and version qualification
The cited release notes document the mechanic for Java Edition 1.19.1. Mojang’s June 28, 2022 article described the feature as available in Bedrock at publication and coming to Java with 1.19.1. If a jukebox, dancing, shard interaction, or cooldown behaves differently in your edition or version, check that edition’s current release notes before redesigning the build. Do not assume a Java-specific timing or interface detail applies unchanged everywhere.

Plan the route before taking an Allay away from its structure. A lead or enclosed corridor reduces the chance that it will wander into hazards. Keep the area lit and remove openings that let the mob escape. Once the Allay has been assigned an item, retain that assignment until it reaches the destination; taking the item back stops the current collection behavior.
Allays are not immune to environmental damage. Fire, falls, hostile-mob exposure, and other ordinary world hazards can kill or displace them. A roofed enclosure with a controlled entrance is safer than leaving an unprotected Allay beside a farm. If you use portals or long corridors, check both ends before releasing it so the mob cannot drift into an unloaded or dangerous area.
Important limitations and gamerule interaction
- Dropped items only: An Allay retrieves matching items lying in the world. It cannot take items directly from chests or other containers.
- No item cloning: The example item identifies the target; it does not create additional copies.
- One assignment at a time: Taking the item back with an empty hand ends that assignment.
- Mob griefing rule: When
/gamerule mobGriefingisfalse, the Allay cannot pick up world items. A player can still hand it an item, but the collection behavior is blocked. - Loaded-area requirement: The search and delivery cycle depends on the relevant chunks remaining active.
- Sound sensitivity: A note block can temporarily override player delivery, and unintended note blocks can redirect the wrong mob.
Troubleshooting an Allay setup
The Allay holds an item but collects nothing
- Confirm the target objects are dropped copies of the assigned item, not items sitting in a chest.
- Move the source within 32 blocks and keep the chunks loaded.
- Check
/gamerule mobGriefing; it must not befalsefor world-item pickup. - Allow for the three-second delay after its last delivery.
The Allay stops following
- Return within the 64-block following range.
- Check that you did not use an empty hand and accidentally reclaim the assignment item.
- Secure the route with a lead or enclosure if the mob is wandering around obstacles.
Items go to the wrong place
- Look for a note block within 16 blocks that may have played during delivery.
- Separate neighboring stations and add wool between the Allay and unwanted note-block sounds.
- Watch for the vibration particle, which confirms that a note block has captured the Allay’s attention.
Duplication does not trigger
- Make sure a music record is actively playing in the jukebox and that the Allay is dancing.
- Use an amethyst shard, not the assignment item.
- Check whether the shared five-minute cooldown has elapsed.
- Verify the edition and version; Java’s documented addition is version 1.19.1, while Bedrock behavior should be checked against the current release for that edition.
A practical Allay workflow
- Find an outpost cage or mansion jail cell with Allays present.
- Secure at least one Allay before opening the structure or beginning transport.
- Move it to a protected work area and decide whether deliveries should return to you or go to a note block.
- Assign one sample item, then place dropped matching items within the 32-block search area.
- Keep yourself within 64 blocks for mobile work, or trigger a nearby note block for a 30-second fixed-delivery period.
- Use wool and physical separation to prevent other note blocks from taking control.
- When you need more workers, play a record in a jukebox and give an amethyst shard to the dancing Allay, then wait out the shared cooldown before repeating.
With those constraints planned into the build, an Allay is most useful as a flexible collector for loose drops: portable when it follows you, and semi-automated when a controlled note-block station routes its deliveries into a hopper.
