The name “Minecraft 26.4 Winter Update” combines two different things: Java Edition’s 26.4 snapshot series and the icy content Mojang calls the final game drop of 2026, currently testable as experimental content in Bedrock Preview 26.60.29. Java 26.4 snapshots do not confirm that the winter drop has launched—or will launch—as stable version 26.4.
When does the Minecraft 26.4 winter update come out?
Mojang’s official pages reviewed for this article do not give a stable release date for the winter drop. The September 30, 2026 testing roundup calls it the final game drop of 2026, and the same day’s Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 changelog labels its Drop 4 of 2026 content experimental. That establishes its place in the announced schedule, not a launch day. Java snapshot announcements and the Bedrock Preview changelog describe testing builds, not a stable release announcement.
Minecraft says game drops generally release for Java and Bedrock on the same day, but the current official timeline does not identify the date for this drop. A date circulating elsewhere should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless Mojang announces it.
What is the difference between Java 26.4 and Bedrock 26.60?
Minecraft’s year-based versioning gives 2026 releases the shared prefix “26,” but Java and Bedrock have different release cadences and their following version numbers need not match. A shared year prefix does not mean the editions are on identical builds or contain identical changes. Minecraft’s version-numbering explainer describes a version number as identifying a specific release.

These are separate test channels, not two stable builds of one winter update. The official Java snapshot notes and Bedrock Preview notes list their respective changes.
What is in the winter drop preview?
The announced icy gameplay features below are experimental in Bedrock Preview 26.60.29. They may change before a stable release. The details are from the official preview changelog.
Ice Caves
Ice Caves are a new cave biome beneath colder, low-temperature Overworld biomes. Their terrain is mainly Packed Ice and Calcite, with icicles, occasional snow, ore pockets in Stone and Deepslate, and occasional Ice Crystals. Strays and Frostbites can appear alongside ordinary cave mobs.

Ice Crystals
These crystal-like blocks naturally appear on Packed Ice and emit light. You can place them in any direction, but they break if the block supporting them is removed. The preview changelog notes that their current size is smaller than intended, so their appearance may change.

Icicles
Icicles grow naturally in Ice Caves and can reach five blocks long when pointing downward. Falling icicles can hurt entities; landing on one adds damage. Nearby light sources or the Nether break an icicle except for its base block.
Freezing effect and potions
The Freezing effect makes a player shake, reduces jump height, and eventually causes damage. Affected players gradually freeze as they do in Powder Snow. Leather armor prevents the player from becoming frozen in the same way as in Powder Snow, but it does not prevent the effect from being applied or remove it.

Ice Balls can be used to brew a Potion of Freezing. Arrows dipped in a cauldron containing the potion become Arrows of Freezing.
Frostbites
Frostbite is a zombie variant that spawns in cold or icy biomes. It switches between melee and ranged attacks: melee hits apply Freezing, while ranged attacks throw Ice Balls. Frostbites are immune to freezing and can stand on Powder Snow.

Ice Balls
Frostbites throw Ice Balls as projectiles. In the preview, an Ice Ball deals 4 damage, with damage scaling down as its velocity falls, and breaks when it hits a block or entity.

Java 26.4 is a snapshot series with its own graphics, interface, and technical changes; it should not be mistaken for the Bedrock winter-content preview.
Snapshot 1: September 22, 2026
Java 26.4 Snapshot 1 made Vulkan the default graphics API. It also changed world upgrading: worlds from before Caves and Cliffs now generate sulfur caves below old chunks. The snapshot includes minor block, item, and entity changes. See the official Java snapshot notes.

Snapshot 2: September 29, 2026
Snapshot 2 improved render-distance fog. When Improved Transparency is enabled, the sky background and clouds behind terrain blend into the fog. The Overworld skybox’s lower half occludes celestial objects, and the F3 debug overlay has been redesigned for readability. Technical notes list Data Pack version 122.1 and Resource Pack version 99.0. Details are in the Snapshot 2 announcement.
How to try the test builds safely
Snapshots and previews are test versions, not the stable game. Mojang warns that snapshots can corrupt worlds, so keep testing separate from saves you care about.
- For Java snapshots: Open the Minecraft Launcher, go to Installations, and enable snapshots. Back up important worlds or use a separate game folder before opening them in a test version.
- For Bedrock Preview/Beta: Enable the Preview or Beta channel on a supported platform. Mojang’s testing roundup lists Preview availability on Realms for Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS, and Android Betas through Google Play. Check the relevant platform’s current availability before switching a world into testing.
Experimental content can be altered or removed as testing continues; its presence in a preview is not a guarantee that every detail will ship unchanged.
