Neither platform is universally better. Ryobi 18V ONE+ is the more natural starting point for many homeowners who want a broad, DIY-oriented range for the house, garage, workshop and yard. Milwaukee M18 is the better fit when your priority is a professional-focused lineup or you already own M18 tools and batteries. The practical choice depends on the jobs you expect to do, the exact kit contents, battery sizes, warranty terms and current price—not the badge on the box.
There is no published, independent head-to-head test establishing that one platform drills, cuts or lasts longer than the other on matched homeowner tasks. Manufacturer pages document compatibility and product ranges, but they do not prove comparative performance. Use the framework below to choose one battery ecosystem before you start accumulating tools.

The short answer: choose the platform you can keep building
A cordless tool purchase is also a battery-system purchase. Ryobi states that its 18V ONE+ batteries work with ONE+ tools, while Milwaukee states that M18 batteries work with M18 tools and chargers. Those are separate ecosystems; an M18 pack cannot be used in a ONE+ tool, and a ONE+ pack cannot be used in an M18 tool. The charger must match the battery family as well.

| If your priority is… | Start by looking at… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A wide homeowner-oriented selection | Ryobi 18V ONE+ | Ryobi describes more than 300 compatible products for home, garage, workshop and yard use. |
| A professional-focused cordless lineup | Milwaukee M18 | M18 includes drilling, fastening, cutting, grinding, lighting and other jobsite-oriented categories. |
| Protecting an existing collection | The platform you already own | Keeping one system avoids duplicate batteries and chargers. |
| The best value in a starter bundle | The exact SKUs, not the brand | Tool count, battery capacity, charger and case contents vary substantially between kits. |
Think of the table as a starting point, not a performance ranking. A two-tool kit can be a better purchase than a six-tool kit if those two tools match your projects and include useful batteries.

What the two battery systems actually are
Ryobi 18V ONE+
Ryobi presents ONE+ as one 18V battery system shared across more than 300 products. Its stated scope covers work around the home, garage, workshop and yard. The company’s battery guide separates standard Lithium packs, positioned for everyday projects, from Lithium EDGE packs, positioned for more demanding applications. These descriptions explain how Ryobi organizes its range; they are not independent runtime or power measurements.
You can review the platform’s compatibility explanation and battery guidance on RYOBI’s 18V ONE+ battery page. The US ONE+ collection shows current tools and kits, but inventory and displayed prices can change.
Milwaukee M18
M18 is Milwaukee’s 18V family. Milwaukee says M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers. It is distinct from the company’s M12 and MX FUEL systems, so a tool’s voltage label alone is not enough when you are shopping for a battery.
The M18 range includes common homeowner tools such as drills, impact drivers, circular saws, reciprocating saws, grinders and work lights, along with more specialized equipment. The manufacturer’s battery and charger information explains the platform boundaries.
Why compatibility matters more than the first tool
The first drill often becomes the battery and charger you use for years. Once you add a saw, light, inflator or yard tool, changing platforms means buying another charger and another set of packs. Decide which family you intend to grow before buying a sale kit. Adapters or improvised wiring are not a safe substitute for a manufacturer-approved battery and charger, and neither company describes the other brand’s packs as compatible.
System breadth: what a homeowner can realistically cover
Where ONE+ makes sense
Ryobi explicitly frames ONE+ around the whole property rather than only construction tasks. That positioning is useful if your list includes shelving, picture hanging, furniture assembly, occasional carpentry, trimming, outdoor cleanup and small repairs. A single family can cover drill and driver work, cutting, sanding, fastening, lighting and selected yard equipment without maintaining separate battery standards.
The “more than 300” figure is a manufacturer-reported count on the US battery page, not an independently audited comparison with M18. Product availability also differs by country and retailer. Treat it as an indication of range, then check that the specific tool you need is sold in your location.

Where M18 makes sense
M18 is aimed at a broad professional tool line, and its catalog extends well beyond a basic drill-and-saw set. That variety can matter to a homeowner who regularly renovates, builds a workshop or wants access to jobsite-style tools. Milwaukee’s six-tool kit, for example, combines drilling, fastening, cutting, grinding and lighting in one bundle.
A large catalog does not automatically make every M18 product a better homeowner purchase. Specialized tools may cost more than a casual user needs, and a professional-oriented lineup can be unnecessary if your work is limited to occasional assembly and repairs. Select tools by the work you actually do.
Compare the documented starter kits by contents
The two example bundles below are useful illustrations, but they are not equivalent packages. One contains two tools and the other contains six, so comparing their prices as though they were competing versions of the same kit would be misleading.
| Kit | Tools listed by the manufacturer | Included power items | Storage | Warranty information shown on the cited page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryobi 18V ONE+ 2-Tool Combo Kit (PCL1201K2) | Drill/driver and circular saw | Batteries and charger | Bag | Current kit pages describe a three-year manufacturer’s warranty; verify the exact SKU and purchase geography. |
| Milwaukee M18 Cordless 6-Tool Combo Kit (2696-26) | Hammer drill/driver, reciprocating saw, circular saw, impact driver, grinder and work light | Two batteries and charger | Contractor bag | The page states five years for tools and three years for batteries, subject to Milwaukee’s terms and exclusions. |
See the full Ryobi PCL1201K2 listing and Milwaukee 2696-26 listing for the manufacturer’s current contents. Before ordering, confirm the exact battery model and amp-hour rating, whether the charger is standard or rapid, and whether every pictured accessory is included. Product photography can show items that are not part of the box.
Performance: what is known and what is not
There is no independent, matched test in the available material that measures Milwaukee M18 and Ryobi ONE+ on the same drilling, fastening, cutting or runtime tasks. That means it would be inaccurate to promise that one brand always drives screws faster, cuts more boards or lasts longer per charge.
Tool-level specifications still matter. A brushless drill, for example, may be a better fit for repeated heavy work than a compact brushed model, regardless of the logo. Compare the exact model’s motor type, chuck, speed and torque settings, blade size, safety features and included battery. Do not infer those details from the platform name alone.
Ryobi’s standard-versus-EDGE battery descriptions and Milwaukee’s M18 compatibility statements tell you how each company organizes its products. They do not constitute laboratory comparisons. If performance is decisive, look for independent testing of the exact two models you are considering and make sure the test used comparable batteries and conditions.

Battery capacity, runtime and charging decisions
Amp-hours are part of the comparison
The battery family tells you whether a pack fits; the pack’s amp-hour rating affects how much energy it stores. A larger pack can run longer but usually adds weight and cost. A compact pack can make a drill or light easier to handle. The kits cited above establish that batteries are included, but they do not establish equivalent amp-hour ratings or equivalent runtime.
Read the battery label or the technical listing for each SKU. Record the amp-hours, number of packs and charger type in your comparison notes. If a kit includes one small pack, budget for a second battery so a charged pack is available while the other is in use.
Match battery size to the job
- Use a lighter pack for overhead drilling, cabinet hardware and inspection lights where balance matters.
- Use a higher-capacity pack for repeated sawing, grinding or long outdoor sessions, while accounting for extra weight.
- Keep a spare pack charged if a project cannot pause for charging.
- Store batteries in a dry, moderate-temperature location and use the charger designed for that battery family.
These are selection practices, not promises of a particular number of cuts or holes. Runtime depends on the tool, material, technique, battery age and temperature.
Warranty terms require a model-by-model check
Tool and battery warranties are separate. A statement about a tool’s warranty should never be applied automatically to its battery or to every product in the brand’s catalog.
| Brand and item | Term reported in the cited material | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ryobi ONE+ battery page | Three-year limited warranty for the cited batteries | Confirm the battery model, region and current exclusions. |
| Ryobi current kit pages | Three-year manufacturer’s warranty described for the cited kits | Verify the exact kit page and purchase geography. |
| Milwaukee 2696-26 kit | Five years for tools; three years for batteries | The kit page’s terms apply to that product; they are not a blanket promise for every Milwaukee tool. |
| Milwaukee general warranty information | Product-specific periods and exclusions | Read the current registration and warranty information before relying on coverage. |
Keep the receipt, record the model number and register the purchase when the manufacturer offers registration. Warranty coverage can depend on geography, normal wear, misuse and excluded components. A longer stated period is useful only if the exact product and failure are covered.
Price and value: compare the bundle you will actually use
Displayed prices and stock change, and the cited pages do not establish a like-for-like, independently tested total-cost comparison. Instead of asking which logo is cheaper, calculate the cost of the complete setup:
- List the tools you need in the next year, not every tool that exists in the catalog.
- Find an equivalent model in each platform—for example, a drill/driver with similar size and features.
- Record the included batteries by model and amp-hours, the charger, case or bag and any accessory.
- Add the cost of one spare battery if the kit’s runtime would interrupt your work.
- Check the current warranty and return policy for the exact seller and region.
- Compare the resulting totals, then choose the system whose future tools fit your list.
A six-tool bundle can look inexpensive per tool while leaving you with unused equipment and heavy batteries. Conversely, a two-tool kit can be poor value if you immediately need to buy a saw, light and extra charger. Value comes from useful coverage and shared batteries, not the largest number printed on the package.

Which platform fits common homeowner situations?
You are starting with no cordless tools
Write down five likely jobs. If they span indoor repairs and yard work, inspect the ONE+ catalog first because its manufacturer explicitly groups those categories together. If the list is centered on renovation, workshop fabrication or a professional-style tool lineup, inspect comparable M18 models. In either case, buy a kit whose first two tools you will use immediately and whose batteries are suitable for the next tool on your list.
You already own ONE+ batteries
Staying with ONE+ usually avoids duplicate chargers and packs. Confirm that the new tool is an 18V ONE+ model and that your existing batteries are in good condition. If an older pack is worn out, price a replacement battery as part of the purchase rather than assuming every used pack will deliver new performance.

Continuing with M18 preserves the investment you have already made. Check whether the new tool is an M18 model and whether its required battery capacity fits your work. Do not switch to a different Milwaukee voltage family simply because the tool looks similar; M12 and MX FUEL are separate systems.
You want occasional repairs and furniture projects
Prioritize a comfortable drill/driver, a compact battery and a dependable light. A large multi-tool bundle may add cost and storage requirements without improving those jobs. Compare ergonomics and included accessories on the exact models.
You expect frequent cutting or renovation
Compare the exact circular saw, reciprocating saw or grinder models, not just their platforms. Look at blade or disc size, guard design, trigger controls, weight with the intended battery and the availability of replacement accessories. Platform breadth can help you add tools later, but it does not replace tool-specific specifications.

- Define the work. Separate occasional tasks from tools you expect to use every month.
- Choose one battery family. Decide between ONE+ and M18 unless an existing collection already makes the decision for you.
- Shortlist exact models. Compare equivalent drills, drivers, saws or lights by specifications and ergonomics.
- Audit the kit. Write down every tool, battery model, amp-hour rating, charger, accessory and storage item.
- Check current terms. Open the manufacturer warranty page and confirm coverage for your country and model.
- Calculate the expansion cost. Add the next two tools and a spare battery to each platform’s total.
- Buy from a seller with a clear return policy. Inspect the box contents and model numbers before discarding packaging.
- Register and maintain the tools. Save receipts, register eligible products and follow the battery and charger instructions.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing tool counts instead of useful tools
A six-tool kit is not automatically better than a two-tool kit. Remove any tool you will not use from the value calculation, then price that tool separately only if you later need it.

Mixing platforms accidentally
Check the voltage-family marking on both the tool and pack. ONE+ and M18 are not cross-compatible, and chargers are platform-specific.
Applying one warranty statement to the entire catalog
Warranty periods can differ between tools, batteries and models. Read the exact product terms and note exclusions before relying on a headline number.

How to build a durable cordless collection
Start with the jobs that recur
Choose the first drill or driver around the fasteners and materials you handle most. Add a light before a rarely used specialty tool if poor visibility slows your work. For yard tasks, confirm that the battery family offers the specific trimmer, blower or other equipment you need rather than assuming every outdoor product is available in every region.
Standardize batteries deliberately
Use the same family wherever practical, label packs by capacity and keep a simple inventory of which tools share them. Retire swollen, damaged or unusually hot batteries instead of trying to revive them. Buy additional chargers only when simultaneous charging genuinely saves project time.
Review the collection once a year
Look at which tools you actually used, which batteries were inconveniently heavy and which jobs still required borrowing or renting equipment. That review tells you whether to add a higher-capacity pack, a lighter pack or a different tool—not whether to change brands based on a single promotion.
Bottom line for homeowners
Choose Ryobi 18V ONE+ when a broad, explicitly homeowner-oriented system for indoor, workshop and yard projects is your main goal, especially if the available starter kits match your needs. Choose Milwaukee M18 when you value a professional-focused lineup or already own M18 batteries and chargers. In either case, the exact tool, battery capacity, kit contents, warranty and current price matter more than a generalized brand ranking. Because no independent matched testing establishes a universal performance winner, make the decision around your work and the platform you can maintain for the long term.
