Store Milwaukee M18 and M12 lithium-ion packs at room temperature in a dry location, away from moisture and prolonged heat. Do not leave them in places that can exceed 120°F for long periods, and do not use oil or solvents on the casing. Milwaukee says partial charging is safe, the packs do not develop a memory, and a full pack stops charging; nevertheless, its general practice is to unplug the charger and remove the battery when the system is not in use.
The short answer: a safe storage routine
For normal storage, use this sequence:
- Let the pack return to a moderate, room-temperature condition before storing or charging it.
- Wipe away surface dirt with a dry or slightly damp cloth, but keep liquid out of the pack.
- Store the pack indoors, at room temperature, in a dry place away from rain, condensation and other moisture.
- Keep it away from prolonged high heat. Milwaukee warns that storing a pack for a long period above 120°F can cause permanent capacity loss.
- Do not deliberately drain the pack before charging. A partial discharge followed by charging does not create a memory effect.
- After roughly a year in storage, charge the pack normally, following the instructions for that pack and charger.
- When charging is complete, unplug the charger and remove the pack if the setup will not be used.
These are Milwaukee’s general directions for its M18 and M12 lithium-ion system. The exact battery and charger manual takes priority if it gives a model-specific instruction.

How to prepare an M18 or M12 battery for storage
Do not run the pack completely flat
There is no need to use a tool until the battery stops before putting it away. Milwaukee’s M18 and M12 battery-pack manual says the packs do not develop a memory from being charged after only a partial discharge. You can charge a pack when it still has useful capacity remaining.
That guidance is different from a required storage percentage. Milwaukee does not specify a universal state-of-charge target in the cited instructions, so do not treat a particular number on a fuel gauge as a mandatory storage level. If a pack is already partly charged, storing it does not require a special discharge cycle.

Check that the pack is dry
Moisture is one of the avoidable storage hazards. Milwaukee’s battery FAQ recommends storing batteries away from moisture, and the combined M18/M12 manual says to store packs at room temperature away from moisture. Damp storage can corrode terminals and can allow fluid to enter the housing.
Before storage, make sure the outside is dry. Do not immerse the battery, leave it in rain, or store it where condensation regularly forms. If liquid has entered the pack, stop using it and follow Milwaukee’s service guidance rather than trying to open or dry the pack internally.
Clean without damaging the housing
Remove ordinary dust from the exterior with a dry cloth or a cloth that is only lightly dampened. Do not clean or lubricate the pack with oil, gasoline, or solvents. Milwaukee warns that solvents can make the plastic casing brittle and cause it to crack. Never spray cleaner into the pack, its contacts, or its vents.

Where to store M18 and M12 packs
Choose a dry, room-temperature location
Milwaukee’s wording is deliberately practical: “Store battery packs at room temperature away from moisture.” Its battery FAQ similarly says, “To maximize battery life, it is best to store batteries at room temperature away from moisture when not in operation.” Room temperature is the manufacturer’s general direction; it is not a promise that one exact temperature range is ideal for every M18 or M12 model.
A suitable location is an indoor shelf or cabinet that stays reasonably stable and dry. Keep the pack clear of leaking pipes, wet floors, outdoor exposure and areas where humidity condenses on tools. The important controls are ordinary temperature, dryness and protection from physical damage, not a special battery box.

Avoid prolonged storage above 120°F
The M18/M12 operator manual warns that permanent capacity loss can result when packs are stored for long periods above 120°F. This is a warning threshold, not a recommended storage temperature. It does not establish that one brief exposure above that point will permanently damage a pack, but it does rule out places that remain extremely hot for weeks or months.
Do not use a closed vehicle, attic, shed or other location that is known to stay above that threshold for prolonged periods. If a pack has been sitting in unusual heat, allow it to return to room temperature before charging and consult the exact pack and charger manual for any additional instructions.

Protect terminals from damp conditions
Keep the battery contacts dry and free of contamination. Moisture can promote corrosion, while oil and solvent residue can damage the casing or interfere with proper contact. Do not apply terminal lubricant unless the exact Milwaukee documentation for your model explicitly calls for it; the cited battery guidance does not recommend a routine lubricant.
Long-term storage: what to do after months or a year
Do not invent a monthly charging schedule
Milwaukee says lithium-ion packs retain their charge during storage longer than other battery types. The combined manual gives one specific direction for extended storage: “After about a year of storage, charge the pack as normal.” The word “about” matters. The instruction does not define a precise day, a fixed percentage, or a universal interval such as every 30, 60 or 90 days.
For a pack stored for less than a year, there is no cited Milwaukee requirement to wake it on a recurring calendar schedule. For a pack stored for around a year, place it on the correct charger and charge it normally. If your individual pack manual gives a different interval or procedure, use that document instead.

Bring the battery back to a normal condition first
Do not charge a pack immediately after moving it from a freezing or very hot location. Let it reach a normal room-temperature condition, then follow the charger’s instructions. Charging behavior is controlled by the battery-and-charger system, but the exact acceptable temperature range can vary by model and charger.
Inspect before returning a long-stored pack to work
Look over the housing and contacts for visible cracks, swelling, corrosion, contamination or moisture. A damaged casing is not a normal maintenance issue to solve with glue or solvent. Do not disassemble the pack. If a persistent fault remains after the pack is dry and at a suitable temperature, use Milwaukee’s authorized service path and the instructions for the exact model.
Can I leave my Milwaukee battery on the charger?
Milwaukee says a pack stops charging when it is full, and its charger electronics are designed to protect against overcharging when a pack remains connected. Milwaukee also describes its charging system as communicating with the pack to monitor cell voltage, temperature and charge status.
That protection does not make permanent connection the preferred storage habit. Milwaukee’s general practice is to unplug chargers and remove battery packs when they are not in use. Therefore, leaving a pack connected until it reaches full charge is covered by the system’s stated protection, but once charging is finished, disconnect the charger and store the pack as directed if you will not be using it.
Do not use a generic charger simply because its connector appears to fit. The charger must be intended for the battery family and model, and the exact manual controls the procedure.

What the charger indicators mean when a pack is too hot or cold
The combined M18/M12 manual shows that a rapidly flashing red charger indicator means the pack temperature is outside the charging range. That signal tells you to use the indicator instructions in the applicable charger manual rather than forcing a charge.
There is no single temperature number that should be transferred to every M18/M12 combination. Charger and battery models can have different operating limits, and older or different manuals may describe the indicators differently. If the red light continues to indicate an out-of-range temperature, disconnect the pack, let it reach room temperature, and check the exact charger and battery documentation. Do not bypass the charger or attempt to charge a wet, damaged or visibly compromised pack.
Routine maintenance that is safe—and what to avoid
Safe habits
- Keep the exterior and contacts dry.
- Store the pack indoors at room temperature when it is not operating.
- Use the correct Milwaukee charger for the pack family.
- Charge whenever convenient; a partial discharge does not create a memory effect.
- Follow the exact manual if a model-specific warning or indicator differs from the general guidance.
Habits that can shorten service life or create a hazard
- Leaving packs for long periods in locations above 120°F.
- Storing them where rain, condensation or other fluid can reach the housing.
- Immersing a pack or allowing liquid to enter it.
- Cleaning or lubricating the pack with oil or solvents.
- Opening, puncturing, modifying or attempting to repair the cells yourself.
- Continuing to charge a pack that is wet, cracked, swollen or otherwise damaged.
Milwaukee’s cited battery instructions direct users to service for persistent faults. A battery that repeatedly refuses to charge, triggers an error after it has returned to a normal temperature, or shows physical damage should not be treated as a cleaning problem.

Milwaukee lists its M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger, model 48-59-1812, as accepting both M18 and M12 batteries. That makes it a compatibility option for owners who use both systems, but it is not a requirement for correct storage and the cited information does not establish a battery-life advantage or a universal charging-speed advantage over every other compatible Milwaukee charger.

Before selecting any replacement, confirm the model number, the M18 or M12 platform, the charger input requirements and the indicator instructions. A charger that is physically convenient but not specified for your pack is not an appropriate substitute.

A practical storage checklist
Use this checklist whenever an M18 or M12 pack is going on the shelf:
- Identify the pack and charger. Note the M18 or M12 family and keep the relevant manuals available.
- Check condition. Do not store a visibly cracked, swollen, wet or persistently faulty pack as though it were normal.
- Clean gently. Remove dust with a dry or lightly damp cloth; never use oil or solvents.
- Choose the location. Use a dry indoor area at room temperature, away from condensation and prolonged high heat.
- Do not force a discharge. Partial charging is acceptable and does not create memory.
- After long storage. Once storage reaches about a year, charge normally with the correct charger.
- After charging. When the pack is full and will not be used, unplug the charger and remove the pack.
- Resolve warnings correctly. If the charger indicates an out-of-range temperature or another fault, use the exact model’s manual and service instructions.
Which instruction wins when manuals differ?
The room-temperature, dry-storage direction and the 120°F prolonged-heat warning are Milwaukee’s general M18/M12 guidance. However, Milwaukee also tells users to consult the battery manual for operation, maintenance, storage and charging. Product generations, charger designs and regional documentation can differ.
