MikroTrick RouterOS Checks: Find Log Clues, Assess Flagged Status, and Respond

To check a MikroTik router for MikroTrick indicators, review its logs for SSH activity involving user -2, inspect the user list for an unexpected privileged ops account, and examine scripts and configuration for changes you do not recognize. Also check RouterOS’s Flagged status—but an unflagged device is not proof of safety. If compromise is suspected, preserve logs and configuration before resetting or rebuilding the router.

What is the MikroTrick RouterOS chain?

CERT Polska uses the name MikroTrick for an unauthenticated SSH exploitation chain affecting RouterOS devices whose SSH service is reachable from public networks. Its technical analysis identifies the chain as CVE-2026-67279, which allows an unauthenticated client to create an SSH session channel, combined with CVE-2026-86060, which lets a crafted username manipulate session privileges.

Do not confuse that chain with CVE-2026-67276. CERT Polska describes CVE-2026-67276 as a separate public-key authentication flaw: exploitation requires knowledge of an account name and its RSA public-key modulus, and access is limited to that account’s privilege level. MikroTik’s September 2026 disclosure also lists issues involving WebFig, certificate handling, and bandwidth-test; the checks below focus on the SSH chain and its reported forensic indicators.

What are the MikroTrick log indicators?

CERT Polska reported these RouterOS log patterns as indicators to investigate:

#1 Best Overall
Mikrotik hEX RB750Gr3 5-port Ethernet Gigabit Router
  • hEX also known as RB750Gr3 is a five port Gigabit Ethernet router for locations where wireless connectivity is not required
  • The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
  • It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
  • IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
  • Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
  • login failure for user -2 from <ip> via ssh
  • user <name> added by ssh:-2@<ip>

Search for the literal -2 and ssh:-2 portions. In the second pattern, <name> is the account added and <ip> is the reported source address. A matching entry is a reason to investigate; its presence alone does not establish the full scope or cause of an incident.

CERT Polska attributes observed successful attacks, including creation of ops, to 82.192.72.4, with activity occurring since at least 2 September 2026. It also reports 103.102.31.18 in attempts to exploit the chain. These are campaign indicators reported by CERT Polska, not an exhaustive list: traffic from another address is not thereby benign, and an address match should be assessed alongside the router’s logs and configuration.

Check for suspicious accounts and configuration

  • Review the local user list for an unexpected, highly privileged account named ops.
  • Inspect scripts and other configuration entries for additions or changes you cannot account for.
  • Where logs or retained artifacts permit, look for evidence of a RIF diagnostic file being created and then transferred using RouterOS fetch. CERT Polska’s technical analysis describes this sequence in published reports, including transfer to 82.192.72.4; it is an observed pattern, not an artifact guaranteed to appear in every compromise.

How do I check whether my MikroTik router was compromised?

Use the indicators together rather than treating any single check as a verdict. A clean-looking log or configuration snapshot cannot establish that no unauthorized activity occurred, while a suspicious entry warrants investigation rather than an assumption about precisely which flaw was used.

  1. Identify the installed RouterOS version and branch. Record the version before changing the device. Compare it with the fixed releases below and verify the applicable branch against MikroTik’s current security guidance.
  2. Review the logs. Search available logs for the two -2 SSH patterns and note timestamps, source addresses, and nearby events.
  3. Inspect accounts and configuration. Check for the privileged ops account, unfamiliar scripts, and other configuration changes you cannot explain.
  4. Check the built-in signal. After updating, look for the compromise notice in the log and run /system/device-mode/print to inspect the Flagged value, as CERT Polska recommends.
  5. Preserve evidence if anything is suspicious. Secure the logs and configuration before a reset or other destructive recovery action. Then follow the response steps below.

What does Flagged mean in RouterOS?

In fixed releases, RouterOS scans configuration at startup for selected known signs of unauthorized changes. It can disable recognized suspicious entries, write a critical message to the log, and mark the device as Flagged. The marker is useful evidence that the system found a selected trace, but CERT Polska cautions that it does not by itself identify which reported vulnerability was exploited.

Is my router safe if it is not Flagged?

No. The scan detects only selected traces, so an unflagged result does not prove the router is uncompromised. Review logs, users, scripts, and configuration even when Flagged is absent. Likewise, treat a flagged result as a reason for investigation and evidence preservation, not as a complete incident diagnosis.

Which RouterOS version fixes MikroTrick?

MikroTik’s security page, updated 6 October 2026, lists the following releases as containing complete fixes for the six September 2026 issues, including the MikroTrick SSH chain. The versions were verified in the advisory on 7 October 2026; check the current advisory and the correct update channel before deployment, since release guidance can change.

MikroTik’s initial September releases 7.24.2 and 7.23.4 contained an incomplete fix for CVE-2026-67278. The advisory identifies 7.24.3 and 7.23.6 as the corrected complete fixes for that issue. The listed fixed versions—or later releases—are the stated guidance; confirm that a release applies to your device’s branch rather than assuming that a version number from another branch is interchangeable.

What should I do if I cannot patch immediately?

Restrict exposure while arranging the update. CERT Polska advises disabling exposed services or limiting access to trusted management networks, especially SSH, WWW/WWW-SSL, and bandwidth-test. DIVD likewise advises restricting SSH to trusted sources or managing the device through a VPN. These are temporary exposure-reduction measures, not substitutes for installing the fix.

What should I do if compromise is suspected?

  1. Isolate the device. Follow CERT Polska’s recommendation to isolate a router when logs, configuration, Flagged status, or other circumstances suggest compromise.
  2. Preserve evidence before reset. Secure the logs and configuration before factory-resetting the device. Do not clear the Flagged status before analysis and evidence capture are complete.
  3. Rebuild from a trusted configuration. After preserving the evidence, restore factory settings and rebuild using a configuration you have verified as trusted. Do not blindly restore a full backup from a potentially compromised router.
  4. Rotate secrets. Change passwords, keys, and other secrets associated with the device or its administration.
