Mike Flanagan says adapting Warhammer 40,000 for television is difficult because the setting has no obvious narrative doorway. Its stories span thousands of years, shift among a huge cast of characters and factions, and now encompass approximately 700 full-length novels. Flanagan calls the project an “adaptation Everest” and says it is a “brutally difficult adaptation,” although he also says working on it has been fun.
Why Warhammer 40,000 has no simple starting point
Most large television adaptations can identify a first book, a central hero or a chronological beginning. Warhammer 40,000 is structured differently. Its fiction covers many eras and viewpoints rather than following one universally accepted opening story. The adaptation team therefore has to make several foundational choices before filming can establish the universe for viewers.

- Where to enter: The show needs an opening situation that makes sense to newcomers without requiring a history lesson.
- Who to follow: The setting offers numerous possible protagonists, factions and competing perspectives.
- How much to explain: Too little context can leave new viewers lost, while too much background can overwhelm the drama.
Flanagan’s comments were reported by Maxbit Games on October 16, 2026, in its account of the project and his comparison with Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series: Maxbit Games report.
The scale problem: thousands of years and about 700 novels
Flanagan cited approximately 700 novel-length Warhammer 40,000 books in 2026. That volume is not merely a large reading list; it is an adaptation-selection problem. The production cannot treat every era, character and faction as equally important in a television season, so it must decide which part of the setting represents the wider universe most effectively.
#1 Best Overall
- The ideal way to get started with the Warhammer 40,000 hobby
- Includes two full Combat Patrol armies of push-fit miniatures, a Core Rules Book, gaming boards, and accessories to get you playing games quickly
- A comprehensive guidebook will walk you through your first steps in building, painting, and playing games
- Also includes a set of plastic, push-fit terrain to provide objectives and cover as your armies advance
- These push-fit miniatures require assembly and are supplied unpainted
The sheer timespan also makes continuity less straightforward than in a conventional series. A story can be set far from another in both chronology and viewpoint while still sharing the same broader setting. That gives writers enormous creative freedom, but it removes the obvious “beginning” that would normally guide a first season.
Why Flanagan finds The Dark Tower easier to structure
Flanagan contrasts Warhammer 40,000 with The Dark Tower, which he says has eight books that can be adapted in sequence. That order provides a defined route: begin with the first novel, introduce the central journey, and let the world expand as later books are adapted.
| Adaptation factor | Warhammer 40,000 | The Dark Tower |
|---|---|---|
| Available novel-length material | Approximately 700 books, according to Flanagan’s 2026 estimate | Eight books |
| Entry structure | No single universally accepted beginning | Books can be followed in sequence |
| Story shape | Many eras, factions and viewpoints | A more clearly ordered central journey |
| Main television challenge | Choosing an era, protagonist and amount of required context | Expanding the world while moving through an established order |
That comparison does not mean The Dark Tower is easy to produce. It explains why Flanagan sees its source structure as cleaner: the adaptation can use the books’ order as a built-in roadmap, while Warhammer 40,000 requires the roadmap to be created first.

What Flanagan actually said about the project
Flanagan described the undertaking as an “adaptation Everest.” His central assessment was: “That’s really a brutally difficult adaptation, but it’s been so fun for it.” The wording points to the tension at the heart of the project: the same abundance that makes the universe hard to organize also gives its creators an unusually deep pool of stories and settings.

Where beginners can start with Warhammer 40,000 books
For readers who want a contained introduction rather than a galaxy-wide survey, Dan Abnett’s Eisenhorn series is presented as a popular starting point. The Eisenhorn Omnibus collects the core material around a single protagonist, giving newcomers a focused plot and a grounded view of the setting before they tackle its wider factions and eras.

Why Eisenhorn is a practical entry point
- Single-protagonist focus: The story is easier to follow than a narrative that constantly changes viewpoint.
- Contained scope: It offers a defined run of novels instead of asking a new reader to navigate the entire publishing line.
- Limited background burden: Readers can learn the setting through the protagonist’s investigations rather than memorizing its history first.
- Self-contained momentum: A newcomer reaches a complete narrative arc quickly compared with trying to read hundreds of connected books.

What this means for the television adaptation
The central creative decision is not whether there is enough material. There is more than enough. The difficult question is how to turn a sprawling setting into a first season that works for viewers who know nothing about it while still satisfying established fans.
- Select a narrative doorway: Choose an era and conflict that can stand on its own.
- Define the primary viewpoint: Give the audience a character or small group through which the unfamiliar world can be understood.
- Explain only essential lore: Introduce background when it changes the stakes of the immediate story.
- Reserve expansion for later: Let additional factions, periods and viewpoints emerge after the first storyline has earned the audience’s attention.
Flanagan’s “brutally difficult” description therefore refers to structure and selection, not a lack of stories. The adaptation must create a clear path through a universe that was built to support many paths.
