Midgard Infra says it plans to extend its Oslo–Stockholm fibre route across the Baltic Sea to Finland with an approximately 200-kilometre subsea cable containing 144 fibre pairs. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2027, with service expected in 2029. These are company-announced targets; the project’s permits, construction award and delivery have not been independently established.

What Midgard Infra announced

In an announcement dated 8 October 2026, Midgard Infra—formerly Altibox Carrier—said it would extend its recently announced Oslo–Stockholm long-haul fibre route onward into Finland. The proposed corridor would connect Norway, Sweden and Finland. The Sweden–Finland crossing is its Finnish extension; the entire Oslo–Stockholm–Finland corridor is not a subsea cable. Planned route, cable and schedule

Midgard describes a subsea segment of approximately 200 kilometres, with 144 fibre pairs. It says the cable would land on the coast northeast of Stockholm and southwest of Finland, but has not named the landing sites. Construction is scheduled to commence in early 2027, and service is expected in 2029. These are planned specifications and target dates, not confirmation that construction has begun or that service will start on schedule. Midgard Infra’s announcement

How the design is intended to provide route diversity

Midgard says the route is designed to avoid sharing landing points, cables or rights-of-way with incumbent Sweden–Finland systems. It also describes the crossing as repeaterless, with active components located onshore, and says it is designed to support high-capacity DWDM deployments while leaving room for future optical technology. These are company design claims; no independent assessment has demonstrated the route’s separation or operational resilience.

The rationale is to create an end-to-end Nordic route rather than stop at the Swedish border. CEO Svein Arild Ims said the company sees Finland’s growing AI infrastructure as a reason for more connectivity and described the unrepeatered crossing as a way to simplify the route. His comments explain Midgard’s case for the project; they do not independently verify resilience or market demand. Midgard Infra’s announcement

Who the cable is for

This is wholesale telecommunications infrastructure, not a consumer broadband service. Midgard identifies carriers, hyperscalers and data centre operators as prospective customers. It says it is discussing duct, indefeasible right of use (IRU) and leased-capacity arrangements, but has not named customers or disclosed signed capacity commitments.

How it differs from other Sweden–Finland cable announcements

Several projects can appear in searches for a new Sweden–Finland cable, but their routes and schedules are distinct.

GlobalConnect’s announcement concerns a different route and must not be treated as an earlier phase of Midgard’s proposal. Eastern Light’s SF-II is also a separate project; the available information is too limited to support a fuller comparison. Eastern Light SF-II announcement

What remains undisclosed

Midgard’s announcement does not state the project’s investment or financing, exact landing locations, permits, construction contractor, detailed construction schedule, named customers or signed capacity agreements. Until those details are established, the cable’s announced length, design and schedule should be understood as plans rather than verified delivery milestones.
