How do I beat captains in Shadow of War?
Scout before you commit
Do not begin by trading direct attacks with a captain if you can first learn what makes that opponent vulnerable. WB Games’ starter guide recommends gaining intel by dominating a nearby Worm, which can reveal a captain’s weakness. Use that information to choose an approach rather than treating every captain as the same fight.

- Inspect the captain and review any available intel.
- Find and dominate a nearby Worm if you need more information.
- Choose an attack plan that takes advantage of the weakness the intel identifies.
- If the encounter turns against Talion, change position instead of continuing an unfavorable exchange.
Use height and distance to reset the fight
Climbing is a tactical tool, not just a way to navigate. WB Games says Talion can climb nearly any surface or structure to leave combat, buy time to heal, or attack from a different position. Use it to create space when overwhelmed or to approach from a better angle; the guidance does not mean every encounter can be escaped safely.
Check the controls for your controller
Control layouts vary by controller type and gameplay situation. WB Games’ controls support page gives basic movement and riding a Caragor as examples of those different contexts. Consult the in-game control display for the controller and situation you are using rather than relying on button mappings for another platform.

How do I get better gear in Shadow of War?
Gear mainly comes from defeating Orc Captains and completing missions. WB Games’ gear FAQ says more difficult Orcs with higher rarities drop gear matching their rarity. In practical terms, missions and captain encounters are the core progression loop: take on content, compare the rewards with your current equipment and combat needs, and adjust your setup as useful drops arrive.

How does the Nemesis System work?
Nintendo describes the system this way: “The Nemesis System creates unique Orc rivals who remember every battle, defeat, and encounter.” Those rivalries make captain encounters feel connected: opponents can become recurring adversaries rather than one-off enemies. Talion can also dominate opponents and make them loyal captains, then command his army in fortress conquests.
WB Games calls the Nemesis System the backbone of much of the game’s conflict. For a beginner, the useful lesson is to pay attention to the particular captain in front of you: learn their intel, adapt your approach, and expect the relationships between rivals and followers to evolve through play rather than follow one fixed sequence.
