Microsoft confirmed on October 2, 2026, that attackers gained unauthorized access to its X account. The company said it had secured the account, removed unauthorized posts and was investigating. One post promised Clippy’s return for 500,000 likes; it came from the compromised account, not from Microsoft as a genuine product announcement.
What happened on Microsoft’s X account
BleepingComputer reported that Microsoft’s official X account, which had over 13 million followers at the time of reporting, reposted and replied to a Clippy-themed account. The reply read: “500,000 likes and we bring Clippy back. The ball is in your court.” Because the account was compromised, that message was not evidence that Microsoft planned to bring back Clippy.

A Microsoft spokesperson, quoted by BleepingComputer as speaking to The Verge, said: “We have confirmed unauthorized access to our account on X including posts that did not come from Microsoft.” The spokesperson added that the account had been secured, the unauthorized posts removed and the circumstances were still under investigation. BleepingComputer’s October 2 report carries the company’s statement.
Did Microsoft endorse the Clippy token?
No. A separate account, @ClippyMSFT, reposted the compromised account’s message and promoted a $Clippy token. BleepingComputer reported that the promoter claimed the token’s liquidity pool was paired directly with $MSFT. That is the promoter’s claim; it does not establish a relationship to Microsoft stock or Microsoft’s approval.

Microsoft said it had not authorized, sponsored, endorsed or permitted a token associated with Clippy, Microsoft or $MSFT. It also stated: “Microsoft does not endorse or have any affiliation with this token, its creators, or any related cryptocurrency project.” The company said it would pursue appropriate legal action to have the unauthorized token and related materials removed. BleepingComputer reported Microsoft’s disclaimer.

How was Microsoft’s X account hacked?

Microsoft account recovery guidance is a separate matter
Microsoft’s support page for recovering a hacked or compromised Microsoft account advises scanning a PC for malware before changing a password, then changing or resetting the password and reviewing account settings. That guidance addresses Microsoft accounts; it does not explain recovery of Microsoft’s X account or show that malware caused this incident.
