Microsoft is pursuing two separate ways to make Windows 11 feel faster. Its accelerated warm-launch design can remove an intermediary process when a supported single-instance app is already running. Separately, Windows 11’s Low Latency Profile (LLP) briefly raises processor frequency during interactive actions. Neither change is a universal speed boost, and neither gives users a normal switch to turn it on immediately.
What extra process is Windows 11 getting rid of?
In the normal warm-launch path for some single-instance Windows applications, Windows starts an intermediary process. That process redirects the launch request to the instance that is already running, rather than opening a second copy. Microsoft’s accelerated-launch API allows the existing instance to receive the launch notification directly, eliminating that intermediary and its redirection overhead.

The result is a reduction in warm-launch latency, not a guarantee that every application will open dramatically faster. The design applies only where the app supports Microsoft’s API and maintains its own single-instancing behavior.

A warm launch occurs when the application, or enough of its runtime state, is already in memory. Cold starts—where Windows must load the executable and dependencies from storage—are a different workload and are not automatically improved by removing the redirecting process.

Why the accelerated-launch feature is limited
Microsoft documents the accelerated-launch API as experimental and limited-access. Support can vary by application, launch source and Windows version, so an app that works when launched from one place may not behave the same way when started through another.
Developers using the API should first perform Microsoft’s support check, then retain a conventional single-instancing path for systems or launch routes that do not support acceleration. The API does not replace an application’s own instance-management logic.
What developers need to preserve
- A normal fallback when the API is unavailable.
- Correct handling of launch notifications in the already-running instance.
- Tests for each relevant launch source, such as a shortcut, file association or protocol activation.
- Compatibility testing across the Windows versions the app supports.
Low Latency Profile is a different Windows 11 change
LLP is an operating-system power and scheduling behavior, not the accelerated-launch API. During interactive work—such as launching an application or opening Start, File Explorer or a context menu—Windows can temporarily raise processor frequency for roughly one to three seconds and prioritize interactive tasks.

Windows Central reported potential improvements of up to 40% for application launches and up to 70% for shell interactions. Those are reported maximums, not guaranteed results: the effect depends on the processor, firmware, power settings, background activity and the particular action being measured.
| Aspect | Accelerated warm launch | Low Latency Profile |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Removes an intermediary redirecting process and notifies the running app instance directly. | Temporarily increases processor frequency and prioritizes interactive work. |
| Primary beneficiary | Developers and users of supported single-instance applications. | Windows 11 users whose devices receive the feature. |
| Availability | Experimental, limited-access API with app and version dependencies. | Staged Controlled Feature Rollout. |
| User control | Implemented and checked in application code. | No ordinary Settings or Control Panel toggle. |
| What is measured | Warm-launch notification and redirection latency. | Hardware-dependent responsiveness during short interactive bursts. |
Why you cannot force-enable LLP normally
Microsoft is distributing LLP through Controlled Feature Rollout. That means compatible Windows 11 devices can receive the behavior at different times, even when they run the same broad release. The feature is not exposed as a user-facing switch in Settings or Control Panel.
Reports have mentioned an unofficial configuration-tool workaround, including tools commonly used to expose hidden Windows features. Such a method is not an assurance that LLP will work correctly, remain enabled, or be safe on a particular build. A forced configuration can also be removed or changed by a subsequent update.

What users should do
- Install supported Windows 11 updates through Settings > Windows Update.
- Restart when Windows requests it, since feature activation may require a reboot.
- Allow time for Microsoft’s staged rollout to reach the device.
- Compare launch and shell responsiveness under similar power and background-load conditions rather than assuming a reported maximum.
There is no supported procedure that guarantees immediate activation. Waiting for rollout is the safest course; an unofficial force-enable utility should not be treated as a Microsoft-supported fix.

No single percentage applies to every PC. The “up to 40%” application-launch figure and “up to 70%” shell-interaction figure reported in 2026 describe potential peaks for LLP under particular hardware and test conditions. They do not describe the accelerated-launch API, and they do not promise that every cold or warm launch will improve by that amount.
On a system limited by storage latency, application initialization, network sign-in or heavy background work, a short CPU-frequency boost may have little visible effect. Conversely, a processor-bound interaction may feel noticeably quicker during LLP’s brief boost window.

What the change means in practice
For users, the two efforts may eventually make Windows 11 feel more responsive, but they arrive through different paths. LLP is an OS rollout that users receive; accelerated warm launch is an app-level capability that developers must adopt and support.
For developers, Microsoft’s documentation—last updated September 26, 2026—should be the authority for current API availability and support checks. Implement the accelerated path only when the documented check succeeds, and keep the standard single-instance route for all other cases.
