Microsoft’s Stock Rebound: What the Bullish Melius Research Headline Does—and Doesn’t—Tell Investors

A bullish headline credited to MarketWatch says Microsoft’s stock comeback is far from over and attributes the view to Melius Research. But the available summary does not identify the analyst, give a rating or price target, or explain the call’s time horizon. Treat it as a reported bullish thesis—not a verified forecast or a direct analyst quote.

What the headline establishes

A Glideslope republication dated October 5, 2026, credits the headline to MarketWatch and says Melius Research views Microsoft as a comparatively safer way for investors to gain exposure to artificial intelligence. The complete MarketWatch article was not available in the material reviewed. As a result, the individual analyst, recommendation, target price, forecast period, and supporting comparison with other AI investments are not established.

The headline’s forceful wording should not be read as a direct quotation from an analyst. It also does not, by itself, show that Microsoft shares are attractively valued or that the rally will continue.

What the recent rebound looked like

Separate context comes from Daniel Sparks’s September 25, 2026, analysis in The Motley Fool. Sparks reported that Microsoft shares closed at $542.07 on October 28, 2025, then fell to $352.83 on June 25, 2026—roughly a 35% decline from the earlier close. By the time of his article, the shares had risen about 46% from the late-June low. Those are historical figures reported in that article, not current returns or a measure of what an investor will earn going forward.

The two pieces should not be combined into a single consensus call: the October 5 headline summary attributes a bullish view to Melius Research, while Sparks’s earlier article examines both Microsoft’s growth opportunity and the costs of pursuing it.

The operating case: Azure growth and AI demand

Sparks reported that Azure and other cloud services grew 43% in the quarter ended June 30, 2026. That growth provides a concrete operating reason investors might be optimistic about Microsoft’s AI opportunity: demand for cloud computing can translate into revenue when Microsoft has capacity available and customers use it.

Growth alone does not settle the investment question. Investors need to distinguish demand from delivery: whether Microsoft can bring data-center capacity online, whether customers are using that capacity, and whether the resulting revenue and profit justify the investment. Sparks also noted that Microsoft later shifted its reporting categories in September, changing the presentation of comparable growth. The 43% figure belongs to the June quarter and should not be treated as a current growth rate or compared casually with figures reported under the later presentation.

The counterweight: infrastructure spending and cash flow

The AI buildout is both a potential growth engine and a substantial financial commitment. In his September 25 article, Sparks reported $41 billion of capital expenditures including finance leases for the June quarter, and an expected roughly $175 billion of spending for calendar 2026 following an accounting change. These figures are reported by Sparks; they should not be mistaken for independently verified current guidance.

He also reported that quarterly operating cash flow rose 30% year over year to $55.4 billion, while free cash flow fell about 23% to $19.6 billion. For the full fiscal year, his article put free cash flow at roughly $67 billion, compared with about $72 billion the previous year. The divergence matters: a company can generate more cash from operations while spending so heavily on infrastructure that less remains as free cash flow.

That does not prove the investment will fail. It does mean investors should look for evidence that new capacity is being monetized and that spending can ultimately support durable cash generation, rather than treating faster cloud growth as sufficient proof.

How to assess the bullish thesis

Because the available Melius summary does not disclose its valuation work or forecast details, investors can evaluate the broader thesis using questions rather than assuming a particular target or return:

  • Cloud growth and capacity: Is Azure growth continuing, and can Microsoft deliver enough capacity to serve demand?
  • AI monetization: Is demand translating into paid usage and business results, not just announced investment or interest?
  • Capital intensity: How do spending commitments and the eventual costs of operating infrastructure compare with the revenue it supports?
  • Free-cash-flow conversion: Does free cash flow recover as capacity comes online, or does heavy investment continue to absorb more cash?
  • Valuation: Does the share price leave room for the expected growth, given execution risks and the capital required?

These are analytical tests, not a sourced ranking of Microsoft against other AI investments. The available summary does not provide enough detail to verify Melius Research’s comparative safety claim or its assumptions about valuation and returns.

What this means for an investor

The evidence supports a mixed, time-sensitive picture: Sparks’s September analysis reported a sharp recovery from the June low alongside strong Azure growth, but also unusually large infrastructure spending and weaker free cash flow. The October 5 headline adds a separate bullish attribution to Melius Research, without enough detail to assess the analyst’s target, timing, or reasoning.

The Motley Fool article is an independently authored analysis, and The Motley Fool disclosed that it has positions in and recommends Microsoft. That disclosure is relevant context when weighing its perspective. Neither the historical price rebound nor the headline attribution is a substitute for checking current financial reports, valuation, and your own risk tolerance.
