Microsoft’s new serif typeface, Michelangelus, takes inspiration from Michelangelo’s work, handwritten manuscripts and signature—but its designers say it is not a replica of his handwriting. Studiogusto created it for the Fabbrica di San Pietro to mark the 400th anniversary of the consecration of St. Peter’s Basilica. Microsoft says the font is available to download and is planned for Word, PowerPoint and Excel through Microsoft 365 at the end of 2026.
What is the Michelangelus font?
Michelangelus is a new serif typeface commissioned by the Fabbrica di San Pietro and designed by Studiogusto. Microsoft Design announced it on 8 October 2026 as a font inspired by Michelangelo’s work and handwritten manuscripts, with his signature a particular focus. The commissioning institution says the project marks the 400th anniversary of the consecration of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The design is inspired by historical material, not meant to reproduce Michelangelo’s handwriting. Studiogusto founder, co-partner and creative director Stefano Calandro explained the choice: “Our first decision, probably the most important one, was not to emulate and perfectly imitate the Michelangelo’s handwriting,” Microsoft Design’s announcement reports.
How many glyphs and styles does Michelangelus have?
The official announcements agree that Michelangelus comes in four styles, but they give different glyph totals. Neither announcement explains the discrepancy, so there is not yet a single confirmed count.

Where can you get Michelangelus, and when will it appear in Office?
Microsoft says Michelangelus is available for download and is planned to be distributed through Microsoft 365 apps, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel, at the end of 2026. The Fabbrica di San Pietro describes it as free to use worldwide. The announcements do not provide detailed licensing terms, a direct download URL, or installation instructions, so check the official font listing or announcement for the current download and terms.

Is Michelangelus replacing Aptos?
No. Michelangelus is a separate serif font, not a replacement for Aptos and not the new Office default. Microsoft identifies Aptos as the current default Office font. It is a contemporary sans serif designed by Steve Matteson to replace Calibri; Michelangelus is a newly announced serif inspired by Michelangelo’s work and signature.
