On February 7, 2023, Microsoft unveiled an AI-powered Bing search experience alongside new features for its Edge browser, describing the combined search, browsing and chat experience as a “Copilot for the Web.” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella framed the launch as a competitive turning point: “In fact, a race starts today in terms of what you can expect.” That was an expression of ambition—not evidence that Microsoft had already won a search race.
What Microsoft announced on February 7, 2023
Microsoft introduced a redesigned Bing experience and an updated Edge browser at the same event. The proposed experience combined conventional search results with AI-generated answers grounded in web information, a conversational chat interface and help generating content. Microsoft presented Bing and Edge together as a way to search and work with information across the web.

The announcement was a product vision and launch presentation, not an independent assessment of search quality. Microsoft’s announcement and its event transcript record what the company introduced and claimed.
What the AI-assisted search experience was meant to do
Microsoft described four intended benefits: improve search results, answer questions directly, support conversational follow-ups and help users create content. The distinction from a conventional search workflow was not simply “AI instead of links.” Microsoft’s pitch was that users could move between familiar results and synthesized assistance, then continue exploring through chat.

This table reflects Microsoft’s product positioning, not independent scores of accuracy, usefulness or performance. The examples below were demonstrations at Microsoft’s 2023 event, not proof that every prompt would work reliably in everyday use.
Finding a practical answer
Microsoft demonstrated asking whether a loveseat would fit in a car and requesting substitutes for eggs in a recipe. These examples showed the intended shift from matching keywords to asking a question in ordinary language and receiving a direct response.
Planning and creating
Other demonstrations included generating a five-day travel itinerary, making a meal plan and creating a trivia game. These illustrated the content-generation side of the announcement: Bing was presented not only as a way to find existing pages, but also as a tool for drafting a useful starting point.

Working with material in Edge
Microsoft showed Edge assistance summarizing a PDF, comparing information across documents and helping transform a code snippet. That browser integration extended the pitch beyond a search box: users could ask for help with material they were already viewing.
What Microsoft said powered the new Bing
Microsoft said Bing used a next-generation OpenAI large language model customized for search. It also described “Prometheus Model” as a proprietary collection of techniques connecting the model to Bing’s search index and query methods. According to Microsoft, that approach was intended to improve answer relevance, provide web links and citations, draw on fresher information, understand location better and apply safety checks.
These are Microsoft’s launch-era descriptions of its system, not independently verified measurements. The company also said it had applied AI to its core search-ranking engine and called the resulting relevance improvement the largest in two decades; the cited event transcript does not provide independent evaluation data for that claim.

How to read the launch statistics and “race” language
During the presentation, Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi offered several figures to explain the company’s case for changing search. They should be read as claims made at the February 2023 event, not as independently established or current statistics.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Microsoft said it handled “over 10 billion queries a day.” The transcript gives no methodology alongside the figure.
- Microsoft said users clicked a search link and immediately clicked back “40% of the time.” The cited passage does not describe the underlying study.
- Microsoft said “75% of all searches are three keywords or less.” This, too, is a presentation claim rather than an independently verified current measure.
Nadella’s “race starts today” quote belongs in the same context: it signaled Microsoft’s intent to compete by changing what people might expect from search and browsing. It does not establish that the launch led to a particular market result. Microsoft’s broader description of the ambition was to bring search, the browser and chat together as a “Copilot for the Web.”

Microsoft’s current product pages use the name “Copilot Search in Bing” for an experience described as providing summarized answers, cited sources and suggestions for further exploration. The company contrasts it with traditional Bing search, which it presents as suited to finding websites, articles, quick facts and product information. Microsoft cautions that Bing features and functionality may vary by device, market and browser version. See Microsoft’s current Bing features page for its description.

That is the company’s product description, not an independent evaluation of its accuracy or comparative performance. Details are on Microsoft’s Edge Copilot page.
The current product names and descriptions provide context for the 2023 announcement, but they should not be treated as proof that today’s features exactly match the original preview. Availability and functionality can differ across markets, devices and browser versions.
