Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShort answer: The Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra is worth buying only if you need unusually large local-AI models, CUDA development, or heavily threaded work in a premium 15-inch notebook. Its RTX Spark N1X platform can load models that 24GB gaming laptops cannot, but Windows on Arm compatibility, an unresolved power-off problem under one sustained test, and prices from $2,599.99 to $5,899.99 make it a specialist purchase rather than a safe recommendation for everyone.
What the Surface Laptop Ultra is
The Surface Laptop Ultra pairs a 15-inch Surface chassis with NVIDIA’s RTX Spark N1X platform. The platform combines up to a 20-core Grace CPU, a 6,144-core Blackwell RTX GPU and up to 128GB of shared LPDDR5X memory. CPU and GPU draw from the same pool, so memory capacity—not just graphics speed—is the central reason to consider it.

Microsoft positions the machine for local agents and private workloads: “Run local agents, automate routine tasks, keep sensitive work closer to you, and reserve the cloud for larger AI workloads.” That is a more accurate description of the Ultra than calling it simply a faster Surface Laptop.

For local AI, memory is the buying decision. StorageReview’s tested 128GB model allocated 64GB to the GPU and 64GB to the system; the GPU allocation can be adjusted up to 96GB. A 24GB configuration cannot offer the same model capacity, so paying for more memory can matter more than paying for a modest CPU upgrade.
Performance: where the Ultra earns its premium
Independent CPU and system results
StorageReview tested a 20-core system with a 6,144-core GPU and 128GB of LPDDR5-9400 memory. It recorded a 6,963 Cinebench 2026 multi-core score, completed an LLVM 21.1.4 build in 206.4 seconds and measured 122GB/s of memory bandwidth. These are results from one review configuration, not guarantees for every SKU.
Local AI capacity versus token speed
The strongest evidence concerns models that exceed the memory available in conventional laptops. With 64GB assigned to graphics, the Ultra ran gpt-oss:20b and Qwen3.6-35B-A3B at roughly 58–89 tokens per second in StorageReview’s tests. Its large unified pool also loaded models above the 24GB ceiling of the tested RTX 5090 laptop.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
The RTX 5090 laptop was about 2.3 times faster on models that fit within 24GB. The trade-off is capacity: on larger models, the Surface was the only tested system to reach usable speed. StorageReview’s MLPerf examples include 48.9 tokens per second for the Data Analyst Agent and 46.0 seconds end-to-end for the SWE Agent.
That makes the Ultra a capacity-first workstation. If your models fit comfortably in 24GB, a high-power RTX 5090 notebook should deliver more tokens per second. If they do not, the Ultra may be the practical option despite lower peak speed.
Windows on Arm: the compatibility cost
Windows 11 Pro runs natively on Arm64, while x64 applications rely on Microsoft’s Prism emulation. Native Arm builds generally provide the best experience; compatibility can still depend on drivers, plug-ins, anti-cheat systems and specialist software.

Check these applications before buying
- CUDA, AI and developer tools you use daily
- GPU drivers, device utilities and hardware control software
- Audio, video and 3D plug-ins that may not have Arm versions
- Enterprise security tools or games that use kernel-level anti-cheat
Windows on Arm is not automatically a deal-breaker, but a workflow that depends on one incompatible plug-in can make an expensive workstation unusable. Confirm native Arm support or verified Prism behavior for every critical application.

Storage behavior
The Gen5 SSD produced 14.1GB/s sequential reads in StorageReview’s testing. Through NTFS and BitLocker, however, approximately 300,000 4K random IOPS were measured versus 1.67 million IOPS from the raw device. Sequential transfers are excellent; encrypted small-file workloads can show a much larger gap.
The serious stability warning
StorageReview reports that two review units failed the same all-core OpenBLAS LU solve at N=20000. The tested laptop powered off three times on October 14 while the processor reached 95°C. The reviewer believes the pattern points to power delivery or firmware protection rather than simple overheating.

This is one laboratory’s early result, not an established failure rate. It is nevertheless a meaningful reason to wait for firmware updates and follow-up testing if your work involves long, uninterrupted CPU loads. A machine that handles short benchmarks but shuts down during a sustained solve is not dependable enough for every professional workload.

Microsoft’s battery figures are claims from preproduction hardware and software tested in September 2026 at 150-nit brightness over Wi-Fi: up to 15 hours of local video playback and up to 12 hours of active web browsing across 12 sites. StorageReview had not yet published independent battery, display or keyboard testing, so these figures should not be treated as measured review results.

How it compares with the alternatives
Against an RTX 5090 laptop
Choose the RTX 5090 class when your models fit in 24GB and maximum token speed matters. Choose the Ultra when model capacity is the constraint. Also compare sustained power behavior, fan noise, weight and Windows on Arm compatibility; the available test data does not establish a universal winner on those factors.
Against a MacBook Pro
A MacBook Pro comparison should focus on the AI frameworks and native applications your workflow requires, available unified memory, battery measurements, display quality and total price. The Ultra’s advantage is an NVIDIA RTX environment and the ability to dedicate up to 96GB of its shared pool to graphics; its unresolved stability result and Arm Windows compatibility require more caution.
Against a conventional Surface Laptop
The ordinary Surface Laptop is the simpler choice for office work, portability and broad compatibility. The Ultra’s premium buys the RTX Spark GPU, substantially larger memory configurations and local-AI capability that conventional models do not target.
Who should buy it now?
Buy if
- You run local models large enough to exceed 24GB of GPU memory.
- You need CUDA development or heavily threaded builds on a mobile workstation.
- You can verify Arm-compatible drivers, plug-ins and security software.
- You accept that early firmware and power-delivery behavior may change.
Wait if
- You primarily do web, office or light creative work.
- You need independently verified battery life immediately.
- Your income depends on uninterrupted sustained CPU workloads.
- You require broad x64 compatibility without application-by-application testing.
Verdict
The Surface Laptop Ultra is a compelling specialist machine, not a universal upgrade. Its unified-memory design changes what can run locally: StorageReview’s 64GB GPU allocation, adjustable to 96GB, gives it a capability that faster 24GB laptops lack. That advantage is real enough to justify the price for AI practitioners, developers and creators with large models.
For ordinary productivity, the premium is difficult to justify. Microsoft’s battery numbers remain first-party estimates, Windows on Arm still requires compatibility checks, and repeated power-offs in one sustained OpenBLAS test make it sensible to wait for firmware and follow-up reviews unless the Ultra’s large-memory capability solves an immediate problem.
