Copilot+ PCs are not being dropped: Microsoft is continuing to position them as a key part of Windows’ hybrid AI strategy. The company says Copilot will be able to use relevant local PC context, perform actions on a user’s device with permission, and draw on on-device models alongside cloud AI. Those capabilities are planned for rollout in the coming months—not broadly available yet—and Microsoft says timing may differ by device, market, and silicon platform.
What Microsoft announced about Copilot+ PCs
In an October 7, 2026 Windows Experience Blog post, Microsoft Executive Vice President of Windows + Devices Pavan Davuluri described Windows hybrid intelligence: a platform in which AI agents can run locally when appropriate and use cloud computing when needed. Microsoft’s announcement keeps Copilot+ PCs in the picture as a device category for that approach.

For Copilot on Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft outlined three capabilities:
Recommended Free Tools
- Local context: Copilot can use relevant files and recent activity on the PC to understand what the user is working on.
- Local actions: Copilot can take actions across Windows, with the user’s permission.
- On-device models: Copilot can access AI models running on the PC, combining them with cloud intelligence as needed.
Davuluri summarized the approach this way: “Copilot understands your PC, takes action with your permission, and uses local models when it makes sense, with you in control at every step.” That describes Microsoft’s intended capabilities, not a guarantee that every request or piece of data will stay on the PC.

When will the new Copilot features arrive?
Microsoft says features powered by hybrid intelligence are expected to begin rolling out to Copilot+ PCs in the coming months. Windows Update is required. The company’s footnote cautions: “Availability and timing may vary by device, market, and silicon platform.”
That means the announcement does not establish a single release date or confirm that every Copilot+ PC model will receive the same features at once. Microsoft named Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft Surface among the makers in the Copilot+ PC ecosystem, but did not publish a model-by-model eligibility list in the announcement.

What does “tens of millions of PCs a year” mean?
Windows Latest reported on October 8, 2026, that Davuluri described Copilot+ PCs at an October 7 Windows and Surface event as shipping in “tens of millions of PCs a year.” That is an event remark reported by Windows Latest, not an independently audited shipment count.
Microsoft’s own blog gives two different company-reported figures: more than 2 trillion local inferences per month across Copilot+ PCs, and more than 40% of laptops being built for business are Copilot+ PCs. The first is a usage-scale claim; the second concerns business laptops being built. Neither is the annual shipment figure, and Microsoft does not present these numbers as independent measurements.

What this means if you are choosing a PC
The announcement signals that Microsoft intends Copilot+ PCs to remain relevant to its Windows AI plans, but it is not enough to determine whether a particular laptop will support a particular feature or when it will arrive. For a purchase decision, check the exact model’s confirmed Copilot+ eligibility and processor platform, then consider whether the announced capabilities fit your workload. Microsoft’s timing caveat and the absence of a complete model matrix make broad assumptions about support premature.
