Microsoft Removed 44 Intel Xeon CPUs From Windows 11 22H2’s Support List in 2023

Microsoft removed 44 Intel Xeon E-series processors from its Windows 11 version 22H2 supported-processor list in a change reported in July 2023. It was not a blanket removal of Xeon CPUs, nor did editing the list automatically shut down Windows 11 on PCs already using those chips. Current eligibility depends on the exact processor and Windows release.

What Microsoft changed in 2023

Microsoft’s Windows 11 22H2 Intel processor list was updated in late July 2023, and contemporary reporting identified 44 Xeon E-series models that had disappeared from it. The reports were published in August 2023; this is a historical change, not a new 2026 announcement. Gizmochina’s report and WinCert’s report documented the change.

The models span Xeon E-2100, E-2200 and E-2300 families. The reported list is:

  • Xeon E-2104G, E-2124, E-2124G, E-2126G, E-2134, E-2136, E-2144G, E-2146G, E-2174G, E-2176G, E-2176M, E-2186G and E-2186M.
  • Xeon E-2224, E-2224G, E-2226G, E-2226GE, E-2234, E-2236, E-2244G, E-2246G, E-2254ME, E-2254ML, E-2274G, E-2276G, E-2276M, E-2276ME, E-2276ML, E-2278G, E-2278GE, E-2278GEL, E-2286G, E-2286M and E-2288G.
  • Xeon E-2314, E-2324G, E-2334, E-2336, E-2356G, E-2374G, E-2378, E-2378G, E-2386G and E-2388G.

These are specific E-series models—not every processor sold under the Xeon name. Microsoft has not publicly stated a specific reason for this particular list change in the sources documenting it. The fact that desktop processors from related generations were treated differently does not establish the reason.

What “removed from the support list” does—and does not—mean

Microsoft publishes processor compatibility information in the context of Windows 11 hardware requirements and supported devices. A processor list is relevant to official eligibility and OEMs building new Windows PCs, but it is not the same thing as an on/off switch for each existing installation. Several questions are often collapsed into the word “support”:

  • Official processor eligibility: whether the exact CPU appears on Microsoft’s list for the Windows release in question.
  • OEM qualification: whether a manufacturer can offer a new system in the supported Windows configuration.
  • Installation: whether Windows Setup permits installation on a particular machine.
  • Updates: whether a feature update is offered, and whether cumulative or security updates continue to arrive.
  • Existing operation: whether an installed system continues to boot and run.

Those are related, but one does not prove the outcome of the others. A system’s absence from a processor list does not by itself show that it will stop booting, immediately lose updates, or become physically incapable of running Windows. Nor does a successful installation establish official support or guarantee future updates.

Will an existing PC with one of these Xeons still work?

The 2023 list edit alone was not evidence of an immediate shutdown or forced downgrade for an already-installed PC. Owners should not wipe a functioning system solely because of the historical change. However, the list change also does not promise that an affected system will qualify for every later feature release or receive every future update indefinitely. Microsoft’s policy and enforcement can differ by release and update type.

For a business-critical machine, keep a verified backup and recovery route, track the Windows release currently installed, and plan around support certainty rather than assuming the current installation guarantees long-term eligibility. If the machine is used mainly as a server, compare its needs with an appropriate server operating system rather than assuming Windows 11 client is the best fit.

Check the exact CPU, Windows release and hardware settings

  1. Find the processor and firmware mode: press Windows key + R, enter msinfo32, and check Processor, BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.
  2. Check TPM: press Windows key + R, enter tpm.msc, and see whether a compatible TPM is present and ready. A motherboard may require enabling TPM in firmware.
  3. Identify the installed Windows version: open Settings > System > About, or press Windows key + R and run winver.
  4. Compare the exact model against the list for that release: do not rely on “Xeon E-23xx” or another family label alone. Microsoft publishes distinct Intel processor pages for Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2.
  5. Use PC Health Check as a system-level check: it can help identify compatibility issues across the PC, but it is not a substitute for checking the exact CPU against the applicable release list. Intel’s Windows 11 eligibility guidance also points users to Microsoft’s supported-processor information.

Eligibility is not determined by the CPU name alone. TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, UEFI firmware, motherboard support and drivers can affect the result. In a virtual machine, the hypervisor may hide CPU features from the guest; that is a separate issue from the physical processor’s entry on Microsoft’s list.

Why check 24H2 or 25H2 separately?

The 44-model change concerned the Windows 11 22H2 list. It should not be re-described as a 24H2 or 25H2 removal. Microsoft maintains release-specific processor pages, and its later documentation still includes Xeon families. For example, the 24H2 list identifies 3rd Generation Xeon Scalable processors, while the 25H2 page identifies 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable processors. That does not mean every Xeon is supported: check the exact model on the page for the intended release.

For a PC running or being considered for a newer Windows 11 version, use the applicable Microsoft page rather than drawing conclusions from the 2023 22H2 report. A historical change to one list is not proof of current eligibility—or ineligibility—for another release.

Keep the current installation and monitor eligibility

If the PC is stable, first establish its exact Windows version and update status, then maintain backups and check supported release information before attempting a feature upgrade. This avoids turning a list entry into an unnecessary reinstall.

Install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware

Some systems that are not officially supported can still install or run Windows 11, but an installation workaround does not confer official support or guarantee updates. Microsoft’s caveats for unsupported hardware, where applicable, should be read before proceeding. Tools such as Rufus can bypass selected setup checks; they cannot add missing CPU instructions, fix firmware incompatibility or guarantee that a future release will accept the machine. Back up data and prepare recovery media before an unsupported upgrade.

Choose an operating system that fits the machine

Windows Server may suit hardware performing server duties, while a supported Linux distribution may extend the useful life of a workstation. Both choices require checking application, driver and operational needs. Server-oriented Xeon systems can have client-Windows limitations involving firmware, power management, graphics or drivers.

Replace the platform when long-term Windows support is essential

For a system where predictable Windows 11 support is a requirement, choose a complete platform whose exact CPU is listed for the target release and whose manufacturer documents TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and current drivers. CPU speed alone is not a reliable eligibility test.

What to verify before buying a used Xeon workstation

A used workstation may offer ECC memory or a useful multi-core configuration, but its age and platform matter as much as the processor badge. Confirm:

  • The exact CPU model and its presence or absence on the list for the Windows version you intend to use.
  • TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and UEFI support in the machine’s firmware, not just in the CPU specification.
  • Whether the vendor still provides firmware and drivers for storage, graphics, networking and chipset components.
  • Memory type and capacity, and whether the motherboard supports ECC in the configuration offered.
  • Whether the Xeon model has integrated graphics; models without it need a suitable discrete GPU.
  • For dual-socket or server-oriented systems, whether Windows 11 client software and drivers suit the actual workload.
  • For a virtualized deployment, whether the hypervisor exposes the CPU features the Windows guest requires.

If a used machine will support a business or a long-lived workstation, uncertain release eligibility, older firmware and limited upgrade options can outweigh an attractive purchase price. Check the complete model and platform before buying.
