Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 are no longer supported. Microsoft ended support on October 10, 2023, so installations still running these releases no longer receive normal security updates, bug fixes, non-security updates, technical support or updates to online technical content. Administrators should now plan an upgrade to Windows Server 2022, migration to Azure, or a time-limited Extended Security Updates (ESU) arrangement while a broader modernization project is completed.
What changed after October 10, 2023
Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement set October 10, 2023, as the end-of-support date for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft’s lifecycle table lists October 30, 2012, as the product start date and October 10, 2018, as the end of mainstream support. The practical result is the same: systems that remain on these versions are outside normal product servicing.

- No regular security updates
- No non-security quality updates or bug fixes
- No standard Microsoft technical support
- No updates to online technical content for the retired release
Running software after end of support does not automatically shut it down, but it leaves newly discovered vulnerabilities without ordinary product fixes. The exposure applies to physical servers, virtual machines and workloads hosted in private data centers.
Microsoft’s recommended destinations
Upgrade on premises to Windows Server 2022
For organizations that must keep workloads in local facilities, Microsoft identifies Windows Server 2022 as the preferred supported destination. The project still requires application and hardware compatibility checks, licensing decisions, maintenance windows, backup validation and rollback planning. An operating-system upgrade can expose dependencies on older drivers, authentication components, database versions or vendor applications, so treat it as a change project rather than a routine patch.

Rehost eligible workloads in Azure
Eligible Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 workloads moved to Azure can receive up to three years of Extended Security Updates at no additional ESU charge beyond the Azure virtual-machine cost. Azure consumption charges still apply, and the organization remains responsible for operating the migrated virtual machines, configuring access, monitoring performance and controlling spend.
Microsoft describes Azure migration as a way to obtain additional planning time while preserving a virtual-machine operating model. The three-year period is annually renewable and, under Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement, runs through October 13, 2026.

- Server 2025 will be delivered by post, FPP version
- Enterprise Security – Built-in advanced security features including Hotpatching for seamless updates and Credential Guard to protect against unauthorized access.
- Hybrid Cloud Integration – Connects seamlessly with cloud-based services for efficient management of on-premise and cloud infrastructure
- Optimized Performance – Enhanced networking and storage capabilities with improved data handling and support for high-performance workloads
- User-Friendly Interface – A modernized desktop experience with streamlined management tools such as WinGet and Terminal.
Modernize to managed services
Some applications can move beyond a server-based model. Microsoft cites Azure SQL Managed Instance and Azure App Service as examples of platform services that take over much of the underlying patching and lifecycle work. This route can reduce operating-system maintenance, but it may require database changes, application refactoring, new identity and networking designs, and a different cost model.
How the options compare
| Option | Security coverage | Cost model | Operational change | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade on premises to Windows Server 2022 | Supported-release security servicing | New licensing and project costs | Application and compatibility testing required | Organizations that must retain local infrastructure |
| Rehost to Azure virtual machines | Up to three years of free ESUs for eligible workloads | Azure consumption charges; ESU benefit included | Cloud migration and ongoing Azure operations | Teams needing time while preserving VM-based workloads |
| Modernize to managed services or PaaS | Platform handles much of patching and lifecycle | Service consumption plus modernization costs | Application redesign or refactoring may be required | Workloads suited to managed database or application services |
| Buy on-premises ESUs | Security updates only, for up to three years | 100% of the full license price annually in Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3, according to Microsoft’s ESU FAQ | Legacy platform remains in place and ESU prerequisites apply | Short-term exception while a migration project finishes |
What ESUs do—and do not do
Extended Security Updates are a bridge, not a replacement for a supported operating system. They provide security updates only. Microsoft says ESUs do not add product features, provide customer-requested non-security hotfixes or deliver design changes. They also do not restore the full support level that existed before end of support.

- Offers quick and easy installation on PC
- The software is licensed for 5 User CAL
On-premises ESUs require the correct licensing and preparation steps. Before purchasing, verify eligibility, licensing terms, servicing-stack updates and licensing-preparation requirements through your Microsoft licensing channel. Record an end date for every ESU-protected server so temporary coverage does not become an indefinite exception.
A practical migration checklist
- Inventory the estate. List every Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 instance, edition, physical or virtual placement, workload owner, dependencies and data classification.
- Classify each workload. Separate systems that can be upgraded with limited change from those needing application remediation, rehosting or redesign.
- Assess Azure options. Use Azure Migrate for discovery, assessment and migration planning. Microsoft positions it as a free tool that can also migrate and upgrade Windows Server 2012/R2 workloads to Windows Server 2022 in Azure.
- Choose a target and date. Select Windows Server 2022, Azure virtual machines, a managed service or a temporary ESU path. Assign an owner and retirement date to every legacy instance.
- Validate the change. Test application compatibility, identity, networking, backups, monitoring, performance, licensing and compliance requirements before production cutover.
- Protect the rollback path. Keep tested backups and document how to restore service if the upgrade or migration fails.
- Close the exception. Remove the 2012/R2 server when its replacement is accepted, rather than renewing ESUs without a defined exit.
Can an organization keep running Windows Server 2012?
It can continue operating technically, but it is outside normal support. The supported choices are to move to a current Windows Server release, migrate eligible workloads to Azure, modernize to an appropriate managed service, or use ESUs temporarily while completing one of those projects. ESUs should be treated as a documented risk exception with a fixed retirement date, not as a permanent support strategy.

What administrators should decide first
- If local infrastructure is mandatory, begin a Windows Server 2022 compatibility and licensing project.
- If the workload can run in the cloud without redesign, evaluate Azure virtual machines and the included ESU benefit for eligible systems.
- If the application is suitable for platform services, compare modernization effort with the long-term reduction in operating-system maintenance.
- If none of those paths can finish immediately, confirm on-premises ESU prerequisites and budget the annual charge while the migration proceeds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows Server 2012 still supported?
No. Microsoft ended support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 on October 10, 2023.
Can I still get security updates for Windows Server 2012?
Only through an eligible Extended Security Updates arrangement. ESUs provide security updates only and do not restore full product support.
Best Value
How long are Azure ESUs available?
Eligible workloads moved to Azure can receive up to three years of ESUs at no additional ESU charge beyond Azure virtual-machine costs; Microsoft’s stated period runs through October 13, 2026.
What is Microsoft’s preferred on-premises upgrade target?
Microsoft recommends moving on-premises workloads to Windows Server 2022, subject to compatibility, licensing and project testing.
