Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Microsoft Print to PDF has disappeared, restore the built-in Windows feature rather than downloading a random printer driver. Open Windows Features with Win + R, enable the feature, and restart. If it is already enabled, turn it off, restart, then turn it on again. When that fails, use the elevated DISM command documented for the feature.
What Microsoft Print to PDF is—and why it can disappear
Microsoft Print to PDF is a virtual printer included with Windows. It converts a document or web page into a PDF file through the normal Print dialog, so it does not require a physical printer, a USB connection or a separate retail driver. Windows exposes it as an optional Windows feature named Microsoft Print to PDF.

That distinction matters when it goes missing. The usual repair is not downloading a driver from a third-party site; it is restoring the Windows feature. Microsoft Support notes that Windows generally supports printers out of the box, and the virtual printer is part of that operating-system installation.

There are two different problems that are often described as “missing”:
#1 Best Overall
- Windows-wide absence: Microsoft Print to PDF is not listed in the Print dialog or in Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Printing failure: the printer is listed, but a job remains stuck, fails, or works in one application and not another.
Use the feature repair for the first problem. For the second, verify the printer, restart Print Spooler and run Windows printer troubleshooting before changing the feature.
Identify the state before changing anything
| What you see | Likely state | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| The checkbox is clear in Windows Features | The optional feature is disabled | Enable Microsoft Print to PDF, select OK and restart if requested. |
| The checkbox is selected, but no printer exists | The feature registration may be stuck or incomplete | Clear the checkbox, apply the change, restart, then enable it again. |
Windows shows an installation error, such as 0x800f0922 |
Feature servicing did not complete | Repeat the disable/restart/enable cycle, then use DISM from an elevated Command Prompt. |
| The printer is listed but jobs fail | The feature exists; the print pipeline or an application is failing | Test another application, restart Print Spooler and use the Windows printer troubleshooter. |
Restore Microsoft Print to PDF with Windows Features
This is the least invasive and most direct repair. It uses the same Windows component that originally installs the virtual printer.
- Press
Windows + Rto open the Run dialog. - Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. The Windows Features dialog opens. - Scroll through the list and find Microsoft Print to PDF.
- If its checkbox is clear, select it, choose OK and allow Windows to apply the change. Restart when Windows asks you to.
- After the restart, check the printer list and try a simple print job.
When the checkbox is already selected
A selected checkbox does not always mean the virtual printer is correctly registered. If Microsoft Print to PDF is checked but absent from Windows, perform a complete toggle:

optionalfeaturesagain. - Clear Microsoft Print to PDF and select OK.
- Restart Windows, even if the dialog does not insist on an immediate restart.
- Open Windows Features a second time and select Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Select OK and restart again if prompted.
The two restarts give Windows an opportunity to remove the old feature state before installing it again. Do not interrupt the feature-change process or shut down while Windows is applying it.
Use DISM when the graphical repair fails
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) can enable the feature directly in the running Windows installation. This is useful when Windows Features refuses to complete or the checkbox appears to change but the printer never returns.

Enable the feature from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command exactly:
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:"Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features"
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is servicing Windows.
- Restart Windows, then check Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
The feature identifier is Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features; it is different from the friendly label shown in Windows Features. The /Online switch targets the Windows installation that is currently running.
If DISM reports that the component is in a bad state
Disable the same feature, restart, and enable it again. You can use Windows Features for the disable step, or run the corresponding DISM operation from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:"Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features"
Restart after disabling, then run the enable command again. This sequence is a reset of the optional-feature state; it is not a download of a separate PDF driver.
Understanding error 0x800f0922 on Windows 11 24H2
Some Windows 11 version 24H2 users have reported installation error 0x800f0922 while enabling Microsoft Print to PDF. Microsoft Q&A guidance documents the same Windows Features toggle and DISM paths, but it does not establish one universal root cause or a single guaranteed remedy for every 24H2 installation.
If the code appears, record that exact error and your Windows version, complete the disable/restart/enable sequence, and retry the elevated DISM command. If it still fails, the code is useful when you escalate the problem through Microsoft support or an administrator because it identifies a feature-servicing failure rather than a missing application setting.

Confirm that Windows recreated the printer
After a successful feature change or DISM operation, verify the result in the system settings instead of relying on one application’s Print menu.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Look for Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Open a basic document, choose Print, select Microsoft Print to PDF and save a test PDF.
A test document checks the complete path: application, Windows print queue, virtual printer and file-save dialog. If the printer appears in Settings and the test document creates a PDF, the Windows-wide installation is working even if one particular app still has a problem.
Separate an application problem from a Windows problem
Try the same test from a second, simple application. If printing works there but fails in only one program, the missing-printer repair is complete and the remaining fault is application-specific. Check that program’s selected printer and print settings, or use its own repair or reset options. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling the Windows feature when it is already producing PDFs elsewhere.
When the printer exists but will not print
Restart Print Spooler
The Print Spooler service manages queued print jobs. Restarting it can clear a temporary recognition or queue failure without removing installed printers.
- Press
Windows + R, typeservices.mscand press Enter. - Find Print Spooler in the services list.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Start.
- Retry a small test document.
Restarting the service does not re-enable a disabled Microsoft Print to PDF feature. Use it only after confirming that the virtual printer is listed.
Rank #4
Run Windows printer troubleshooting
Windows provides automated printer troubleshooting. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for printer problems and follow the guided checks. The workflow can identify whether Windows can communicate with the printer queue and whether a service or configuration issue is blocking the job.
If the printer is present but only one application fails, run the test from another application before treating the issue as system-wide. A successful second test points away from the feature and toward the original program.

Feature registration can be disturbed after a Windows update, which is why the checkbox reset and DISM paths are useful after an update-related disappearance. The repair steps apply broadly to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but labels can vary slightly by build or display language.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft Support. A Windows 10 computer may continue to run and may still be able to restore Microsoft Print to PDF, but the end-of-support date matters when deciding whether a continuing printing problem should be addressed as part of an upgrade plan. It is not, by itself, proof that the PDF feature disappeared because of support status.

Choose the right repair level
| Situation | Action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Feature unchecked | Enable it in Windows Features | Restores the built-in component with the normal graphical control. |
| Feature checked, printer absent | Disable, restart, enable, restart | Rebuilds the feature state and its printer registration. |
| Feature toggle fails or returns an error | Run DISM as administrator | Uses Windows servicing directly and the documented feature identifier. |
| Printer listed, jobs stuck | Restart Print Spooler and run Get Help troubleshooting | Targets the print queue and service rather than reinstalling a working feature. |
| Works in one app only | Test another app and repair the failing app | Confirms whether the fault is application-specific. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Downloading an unknown “PDF printer” driver: Microsoft Print to PDF is a Windows feature, so an unrelated installer can add another printer without fixing the missing component.
- Stopping after checking the box: If the printer is still absent, complete the clear-and-restart cycle instead of assuming the installation succeeded.
- Running DISM without elevation: A normal Command Prompt may not have permission to service the online Windows image.
- Repeating feature changes when the printer already works elsewhere: Switch to application-level troubleshooting once a test document succeeds.
- Ignoring the exact error code: Record codes such as
0x800f0922and the Windows release, especially on Windows 11 24H2, because they narrow the problem to feature servicing.
Bottom line
Restore Microsoft Print to PDF through optionalfeatures first. If it is checked but missing, clear it, restart, then enable it again. Use the elevated DISM command with feature name Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features when the graphical path fails. Once the printer returns to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, test a document; if jobs still fail, restart Print Spooler and use the Windows printer troubleshooter instead of reinstalling the feature again.
