To choose one, start with the Microsoft product and task you need, then check that server’s current documentation and your MCP client’s setup instructions. The catalog distinguishes local servers, such as Azure MCP, from remote endpoints, such as Microsoft Learn MCP.
What Microsoft’s official MCP catalog is
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol for connecting AI applications to tools and data sources. In the host-client-server pattern, an MCP server exposes capabilities that a compatible client can use. Microsoft’s catalog groups implementations across its product areas; it should be read as a directory of distinct integrations, not as a single package that gives an AI client access to every Microsoft service.
That distinction matters in practice. Each entry has its own purpose, deployment type, documentation, and potentially different access requirements. Being listed in the catalog does not establish that a server is installed with a Microsoft product, enabled in every client, or authorized for every account or resource.
Examples: which servers do what?
The catalog spans Azure, documentation, data and analytics, developer tools, security, productivity, and other areas. These examples show why it is useful to select by task and deployment model rather than by brand alone:

| Catalog entry | Type | Catalog description | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azure MCP | Local | Azure tools and services | A local server offering Azure-related capabilities; check its documentation for setup and authentication. |
| Microsoft Learn MCP | Remote | Microsoft documentation | The listed endpoint is https://learn.microsoft.com/api/mcp. |
| Microsoft Foundry MCP | Remote | Models, knowledge, evaluation, and related tools | A distinct Foundry service, not part of a universal Azure MCP installation. |
| Azure Resource Manager MCP | Remote | Azure Resource Graph and ARM deployment tasks | Its remote designation is separate from the local Azure MCP entry. |
| Microsoft Clarity MCP | Local | Clarity analytics data export | A product-specific integration with its own setup requirements. |
| Microsoft SQL MCP | Local | SQL databases | Do not assume the same permissions or authentication as Azure MCP. |
| Microsoft Sentinel data exploration | Remote | Sentinel data lake exploration | A separate security-oriented remote service. |
These descriptions identify the catalog’s broad scope, not a complete feature or permission list. Before using an entry against a real account, subscription, database, or security environment, consult that server’s own current documentation for the operations it supports and the access it requires.
Local server or remote endpoint?
Local and remote describe different deployment patterns. The catalog labels some implementations local and others remote, which changes what you should expect during setup. A local server is something your client must be configured to run or reach on the local environment; a remote service is addressed as an endpoint. The catalog label alone does not specify all hosting, authentication, network, or data-handling details.
- Choose a local entry when its product area matches the task and the specific server’s instructions support your environment and client.
- Choose a remote entry when its published endpoint and client configuration fit your use case. For Microsoft documentation, the catalog lists the Learn endpoint shown above.
- Do not infer parity. Two entries in the same broad product area can differ in task, deployment, permissions, and client setup.
How to select the right Microsoft MCP server
- Name the task. Decide whether you want to consult Microsoft documentation, work with Azure services, explore Sentinel data, connect to SQL, or use another product area. A product name by itself is not enough to identify the right server.
- Find the matching catalog entry. Check the server’s name, description, category, and local-or-remote designation. Treat the catalog as an index to individual implementations.
- Open that server’s current instructions. Confirm supported operations, prerequisites, authentication, permissions, and any restrictions before connecting it to a real service. The catalog description is not a substitute for server-specific documentation.
- Check your MCP client’s instructions. Compatibility and configuration are client-specific. Do not copy a setup path for one client into another without confirming that the server and client support it.
- Review release status. For repository-hosted servers, check the current release listing and changelog immediately before installation. A version number observed at one point is not a lasting “latest” designation.
- Test access deliberately. Start with an account and resource appropriate to the task, and verify that the configured server exposes only the capabilities you intend to use. Follow the selected server’s authentication and permission guidance.
Azure MCP setup: what the official guide covers
Azure MCP is a local server for Azure tools. Microsoft’s installation guide documents more than one route, but those directions are examples for Azure MCP rather than a universal recipe for every catalog entry.
Rank #2
- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
VS Code
For VS Code users, the guide recommends the Azure MCP Server VS Code extension. Follow the current extension and server instructions, and make sure the client configuration required by the guide is in place. Do not assume that installing an extension alone configures credentials or grants access to an Azure subscription.
Claude Desktop
The guide also documents downloadable .mcpb assets for Claude Desktop, as well as a package-manager and configuration route. Use the current guide to choose the route supported by your installation; the catalog does not establish that every client can use every package.
Authentication and production access
Before connecting Azure MCP to a real subscription, read its current authentication instructions and understand the permissions being granted. The catalog and general installation guidance do not provide enough detail to prescribe a particular role, credential flow, or least-privilege configuration for every Azure task. Those details depend on the server’s current documentation and what you intend to do.

Using Microsoft Learn MCP
Microsoft Learn MCP is listed as a remote endpoint for Microsoft documentation at https://learn.microsoft.com/api/mcp. Use it through an MCP-compatible client and follow Microsoft’s Learn MCP instructions for the supported client configuration. The endpoint is not a local Azure MCP package, and choosing it does not imply access to Azure resource-management tools.
The catalog establishes the endpoint and its documentation-oriented purpose. For configuration syntax, client support, or any usage constraints, refer to the current Learn MCP instructions rather than extrapolating from the Azure MCP setup guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVersion and catalog freshness
Catalog membership, endpoints, installation procedures, and releases can change. The Azure MCP Server release listing showed version 3.0.0-beta.41 with release assets dated September 9, 2026. That is a dated observation, not a guarantee that beta.41 remains the latest release or that a beta is appropriate for a production workload. Check the repository release page, changelog, and server-specific documentation at the time you install.

The catalog and installation material do not establish a single total server count, adoption statistic, performance figure, or common service-level guarantee. Avoid treating a catalog listing as evidence of those things. Likewise, a shared Microsoft association does not mean every server has identical support, maintenance status, or compatibility.
Troubleshooting a Microsoft MCP connection
Because setup varies by server and client, troubleshoot from the specific combination you chose instead of applying one server’s fix everywhere.
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The client does not show or connect to the server | Confirm whether the entry is local or remote, then verify that you followed the setup instructions for that server and the exact MCP client. For a remote service, check the documented endpoint; for a local server, check the documented installation and client configuration. |
| The server starts but cannot perform the task | Check the server-specific documentation for supported operations, authentication, and required permissions. A catalog description does not guarantee that a particular operation is available to your identity. |
| Instructions do not match your client | Return to the server’s current setup guide and select the route for your client. The Azure guide’s VS Code, Claude Desktop, and package/configuration paths should not be treated as universal MCP configuration instructions. |
| A version or download appears outdated | Check the current release page and changelog before installing; do not rely on an older version observation as a latest-version claim. |
| A Microsoft service is missing from the expected server | Re-check the catalog entry and task description. Separate entries such as Azure MCP and Azure Resource Manager MCP are not interchangeable merely because both relate to Azure. |
When ScreenshotNeo is the better MCP alternative
ScreenshotNeo is not a Microsoft catalog server. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media, and it is the alternative to try first when the job is giving an AI agent a visual capture of a web page rather than connecting to a Microsoft service. Its MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf, for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Details are at ScreenshotNeo.
