Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 are different products
Microsoft sells Office 2024 as a one-time purchase of a fixed version. Microsoft 365 is the recurring subscription that provides current Office apps and ongoing feature updates while the subscription is active. Cheapest subscription with installed desktop Office apps
For one person: Microsoft 365 Personal
Personal is the relevant starting plan for an individual who wants installed desktop Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Microsoft describes its subscription apps as the latest versions, with feature, security, and bug-fix updates while the subscription remains active. Personal also includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage for the subscriber. Microsoft’s comparison says the subscription includes Outlook, OneNote, and, on Windows, Access and Publisher.
Microsoft 365 Basic may appear at a lower price, but do not assume that a low-cost consumer subscription includes the full installed desktop Office suite. Check the plan’s included apps against what you need; Microsoft’s subscription and purchase guide outlines its consumer options.

Microsoft lists up to 1 TB of storage per person. If all six places are used, the annual price works out to about $21.67 per person; that is arithmetic, not a guaranteed individual price.
For premium features: Microsoft 365 Premium
Premium is listed at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year. It includes desktop apps and higher-tier, including AI-related, benefits. Features, usage limits, regional availability, and sharing rules can depend on current plan terms, so verify them with Microsoft before subscribing.

What the $179.99 Office Home 2024 purchase includes
Microsoft lists Office Home 2024 for non-commercial use on one PC or Mac. It includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. The listing does not name Outlook, so do not assume it is included; compare Microsoft 365 or Office Home & Business 2024 if you need Outlook.
- Payment: $179.99 once at the observed US list price, rather than a recurring subscription.
- Installation: One PC or Mac, subject to Microsoft’s current system requirements.
- Use: The Home license is listed for non-commercial use. A business should check a commercial-use license or business subscription instead.

Business plans: the lowest price depends on whether you need desktop apps
Microsoft’s US business prices below were observed on August 16, 2026. They are per user per month, and the two columns have different commitment and payment terms.

Business Basic is the least expensive of these plans, but it provides web and mobile Office apps rather than the installed desktop suite. Business Standard is the least expensive listed option here with desktop apps. Microsoft describes plan features and terms on its Microsoft 365 business plans and pricing page. Business plans generally support organizations of up to 300 users, subject to plan-specific licensing terms.

Is annual billing cheaper?

- One home or school user who wants to avoid recurring payments: Office Home 2024, provided one computer and its non-commercial-use terms fit.
- Freelancer or company needing desktop apps for commercial work: Compare a suitable commercial Office license with Microsoft 365 Business Standard; do not assume the Home license permits business use.
- Small business that can work in browser and mobile apps: Business Basic may fit; it is not a desktop Office replacement.
