The key issue is not that the programs suddenly stop opening; it is that newly found security problems and software defects will not be fixed by Microsoft. Continuing to use an unsupported version means accepting that gap.

Can Office 2010 still connect to Microsoft 365 services?

It might connect to some services, but a connection is not proof of support or reliable operation. Microsoft says older Office versions may still connect to Microsoft 365 services, while warning that this use is unsupported and can lead to unexpected performance or reliability problems. Do not assume a particular mailbox, cloud service, or sign-in will work consistently. Microsoft Lifecycle FAQ for Office

What should Office 2010 users do?

If you manage your own computer

Microsoft recommends moving to a newer Office option so you can receive supported features, patches, and security updates. Microsoft 365 is one option; unlike an older one-time Office license, it is a subscription service. Check current plan details and system requirements before choosing, since available features and commercial terms can change.

Compare options against your situation rather than assuming one choice suits everyone:

  • Who manages the installation: personal users can choose an option themselves; work or school devices may be governed by organizational policies.
  • Payment model: decide whether a subscription or a one-time license better fits your needs, and verify current terms with the vendor.
  • Computer requirements: confirm that your operating system and hardware meet the requirements for the version you are considering.
  • Cloud and collaboration needs: check whether the option includes the storage and collaboration features you actually use.
  • Moving your work: consider whether you need help transferring files, settings, or account access.

If work or school manages Office

Contact your IT help desk. Microsoft directs work and school users to their organization’s IT support for upgrade guidance, because the organization may control licensing, deployment, and timing.
