Microsoft is changing several Copilot experiences in 2026, but they are not all simple replacements with a paid product. Group Chat and Copilot Labs are ending, Mico is moving to Learn Live while Copilot Voice continues, and separate changes affect the Copilot app, Edge, Outlook and some Windows companion apps. The date, account type and whether content is preserved depend on the specific service.
Which Copilot services are changing?
Microsoft Support describes the changes as part of an updated Copilot experience. The practical outcomes differ considerably:

| Service | Change | Date or rollout | Content or feature impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group Chat | Retired | Account updates begin August 18, 2026; timing is gradual and account-specific | Messages and images do not carry forward after the account update |
| Copilot Labs | Retired | Microsoft lists September 29, 2026, with timing potentially varying by account update | Experiments and unsaved generated assets become inaccessible |
| Mico | Moved out of the voice experience | Starts in August 2026 and rolls out in waves | Mico continues in Learn Live; voice conversations migrate, but Mico appearance settings do not |
| Copilot Voice | Continues | No universal end date announced | Microsoft says voice conversations remain available even though the animated character leaves the voice experience |
These are feature-level changes, not proof that every retired function has an equivalent paid Copilot replacement.

What happens to Group Chat history and content?
Microsoft says Group Chat account updates begin August 18, 2026 and roll out gradually. After your account is updated, Group Chat content will not carry forward. That includes messages and images that remain only inside the feature.

Save important conversations before your account updates
- Open Group Chat and identify conversations, instructions or images you may need later.
- Copy important messages into a document, notes app or another approved workspace.
- Download images individually if you need the original files.
- Keep the saved copies in a location available to the same people and account that used the chat.
Microsoft Support says the retirement reflects lessons being incorporated into broader Copilot improvements: “We are evolving the Copilot experience to focus on streamlined, high-quality interactions. Learnings from Group Chat are being incorporated into broader Copilot improvements.” The statement does not promise that Group Chat history will be recreated elsewhere.
Is Copilot Labs being replaced?
Copilot Labs is a separate retirement. Microsoft lists September 29, 2026 as the retirement date, although the timing can vary with an account update. Once the feature is retired, its experiments will no longer be accessible.
Protect generated Labs content
- Save or download 3D creations, audio clips and any other generated asset you want to keep.
- Export supporting text or prompts if recreating a project later would matter.
- Do not assume that an asset visible in Labs will be available in the updated Copilot app.
Microsoft specifically warns that generated assets such as 3D creations and audio clips will not carry forward unless they are saved. The retirement date and the Group Chat date therefore require separate preparation.
Is Mico coming back to Copilot Voice?
Mico, the animated character, is leaving the Copilot voice experience and continuing in Learn Live. Microsoft says the change starts in August and rolls out in waves, so users may see different behavior at different times.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.

Voice itself is not being retired. Microsoft’s FAQ states: “Voice in Copilot isn’t going away.” Voice conversation history migrates, but Mico-specific appearance settings do not. If the character’s look matters to you, record those preferences or screenshots before the transition; they will not be transferred as settings.
How the updated Copilot app affects personal, work and school accounts
Microsoft is also updating the Copilot app so chat and image creation sit alongside access to Microsoft 365 apps and files. The transition is not identical for every account:
- Personal accounts: The updated consumer app combines Copilot conversations and image creation with access to eligible Microsoft 365 content.
- Work and school accounts: Organizational identity, administrator controls and licensing affect which Microsoft 365 apps, files and agents appear.
- Separate data boundaries: Microsoft says personal and organizational data remain separate. Signing into one account does not merge its content with the other.
Microsoft says most eligible Copilot content migrates to the updated experience, while feature-specific exceptions apply. Group Chat and Labs are the clearest exceptions. Check the account named in the notice before assuming that a conversation, file or generated asset will move.

Microsoft says free chat and image creation remain subject to capacity and usage limits. A Microsoft 365 subscription can provide higher limits and access to agents where the account and market support them. A subscription is not presented as a requirement to retain Group Chat or Labs content, and it does not restore a retired feature.

What happens to Podcasts and Deep Research?
Microsoft’s troubleshooting page says Podcasts and Deep Research are retired after August 18. That page displays the year as “20206,” an apparent typographical error. The intended date appears to be August 18, 2026 when compared with Microsoft’s other transition guidance, but readers should treat the page’s malformed year as a qualification rather than silently quoting it as clean evidence.
Do not assume that every saved result from these features is lost. The updated-app guidance says eligible content generally migrates, while feature-specific behavior can differ. Export anything important before the account update instead of relying on migration.
Edge Copilot Mode is a separate change
Microsoft’s Edge blog announced on May 13, 2026 that Copilot Mode would be retired as Copilot functions become integrated into Edge. Existing Copilot Mode users were expected to retain priority access to new features through Copilot in Edge Preview. The same announcement described Browse with Copilot as available to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States only at that time.
Edge availability, preview status and market eligibility can change independently of the consumer Copilot app. Read the notice inside your current Edge build rather than treating the Edge announcement as a change to Group Chat, Labs or Mico.

Other reported Microsoft 365 and Windows changes
Outlook Meeting Insights
Windows Central reported on July 20, 2026 that Microsoft planned to retire Outlook Meeting Insights by early September in favor of Copilot meeting preparation for licensed users. The report quoted an archived Message Center notice; that notice was not directly available for independent verification. Organizations should check their current Microsoft 365 tenant messages and licensing before planning around the reported date.
Calendar, People and Files companion apps
TechRadar reported on September 22, 2026 that the Windows Calendar, People and Files companion apps would become unsupported in December 2026. The report says the underlying data remains in Microsoft 365: Outlook and Teams can provide calendar and people information, while Search, File Explorer, SharePoint and OneDrive provide file access. Because the underlying Microsoft notice was not independently retrieved, treat this as reported information and verify it in Windows and Microsoft 365 administration notices.
A practical checklist before a Copilot retirement
- Identify the product: Check whether the notice names personal Copilot, work or school Copilot, Edge, Outlook or a Windows companion app.
- Identify the account: Confirm which Microsoft account is signed in; personal and organizational data remain separate.
- Preserve exceptions first: Copy Group Chat messages, download its images, and save Labs creations before the relevant account update.
- Export anything irreplaceable: Keep files, audio, images, prompts and notes outside the retiring feature.
- Check current notices: Rollouts, licensing, preview access and regional availability can change after the original announcement.
- Test the destination: Sign in to the updated Copilot app or replacement Microsoft 365 surface and confirm that migrated content is present.
The safest assumption is not that all Copilot data disappears, nor that all of it moves automatically. Microsoft’s general migration guidance covers eligible content, while the retirement notices define exceptions that require manual saving.
