Microsoft announced the Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform at Microsoft Build on May 24, 2022. It was a coordinated portfolio and architecture strategy linking databases, analytics, business intelligence and governance—not a single downloadable product or independently priced SKU. In 2026, the term is best understood as the 2022 vision, while Microsoft Fabric is the newer, more unified product experience for many analytics workloads.

What Microsoft announced on May 24, 2022

Microsoft’s Azure announcement described the Intelligent Data Platform as a way to connect the systems enterprises use to store operational data, move and analyze it, deliver insights and govern access. Satya Nadella also presented the idea during the Microsoft Build 2022 keynote. The announcement addressed a practical problem: data is scattered across transactional databases, warehouses, lakes, SaaS applications and on-premises systems, while separate teams operate ingestion, transformation, analytics, machine learning, BI and compliance tools.

Microsoft’s stated promise was less custom integration work, faster access to trusted information and governance closer to the data and workloads. The platform was an architectural approach built from existing and evolving Microsoft services, not a replacement for each of those services.

Microsoft’s announcement and the Build keynote transcript are the primary historical references.

The four pillars

Databases

Operational applications could use Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Hyperscale, SQL Server 2022 or Azure Cosmos DB. These services cover relational and globally distributed NoSQL workloads, with different performance, deployment and licensing models.

Analytics and integration

Azure Synapse Analytics supplied data warehousing, Spark and analytical processing. Azure Data Factory provided data movement and orchestration, while Azure Data Explorer targeted high-volume, time-series and log-style analysis. Azure Synapse Link illustrated the intended connection between operational and analytical systems.

Business intelligence

Power BI delivered semantic models, reports and dashboards. Microsoft also highlighted Power BI Datamarts as a self-service analytics capability in the announcement-era portfolio.

Governance and security

Microsoft Purview supplied inventory, discovery, cataloging, classification, lineage and governance reporting. Purview Data Estate Insights was presented for data leaders who needed a strategic view of estate information and risk. Microsoft said that application would become generally available in the following months; that was a dated 2022 availability statement, not a timeless guarantee.

The August 17, 2022 follow-up discusses SQL Server 2022, Azure Synapse Link for SQL, Purview Data Estate Insights and Power BI Datamarts in this context: Microsoft’s follow-up post.

What “intelligent” meant in 2022

The label did not describe a generative-AI or agent platform. Microsoft used “intelligent” to mean systems that could use current data for real-time or near-real-time analysis, machine-learning integration, predictive insight, automated discovery and adaptive applications.

The Build keynote used an e-commerce scenario: customer activity, products, inventory, suppliers and logistics would be analyzed together while privacy controls governed use. In practice, “real-time” depended on the source system, replication method, network and workload; it did not promise zero-latency data.

How Azure Synapse Link fit

Azure Synapse Link for SQL was a concrete example of the integration strategy. It was designed to replicate transactional SQL data into Synapse for near-real-time analytics, with low-code or no-code configuration and less analytical load on the source database. Microsoft’s August 2022 material called the capability preview at that time, so that historical status should not be treated as its current lifecycle state.

What Purview contributed

Purview was the governance layer rather than an automatic compliance switch. A practical deployment could use it to inventory sources, help stewards curate definitions, trace lineage, classify sensitive information and report on estate risk. Coverage still depends on supported connectors, scan configuration, permissions, metadata quality, identity design and licensing. Named owners and ongoing remediation remain necessary.

An illustrative implementation

This is a representative architecture, not a mandatory Microsoft reference design:

  1. Applications write transactions to Azure SQL, SQL Server or Cosmos DB.
  2. Data Factory or Synapse pipelines ingest and transform data from those systems and other sources.
  3. Synapse provides warehouse, lake, Spark or analytical processing; a workload may also use Azure Data Explorer for event and time-series analysis.
  4. Power BI builds semantic models and delivers reports and dashboards.
  5. Purview catalogs sources, records lineage, applies classification and supports governance reviews.

Whether this architecture is near real time, how much data is copied and what it costs depend on connectors, refresh or replication settings, capacity, storage and network paths.

Microsoft Fabric changed the current context

Microsoft introduced Fabric on May 23, 2023, in its Fabric announcement. Fabric brought data integration, engineering, warehousing, data science, real-time analytics and Power BI experiences into a more unified product around OneLake.

Fabric overlaps with important parts of the Intelligent Data Platform vision, but Microsoft has not established in the cited material that Fabric is a formal rename or replacement. The most accurate distinction is:

  • Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform: the 2022 portfolio and integration concept.
  • Microsoft Fabric: the later, more productized experience for many end-to-end analytics workloads.

Some organizations will still use standalone Synapse, Azure databases, Data Factory or Purview alongside Fabric. Product selection remains workload-specific.

Is the Intelligent Data Platform still a product in 2026?

There is no evidence in the cited Microsoft material that the Intelligent Data Platform was sold as one independently priced SKU. Customers generally provision and license the underlying services. Current buying decisions usually concern Fabric, Synapse, Power BI, Purview, Azure databases, storage, compute and integration separately.

Fabric pricing describes shared capacity for workloads such as data modeling, warehousing, BI and AI experiences: Microsoft Fabric pricing. Synapse has separate serverless and dedicated options and usage-based charges: Azure Synapse Analytics pricing.

How the cost model works

There is no meaningful single “platform price.” A real estimate may include:

  • Fabric capacity size, runtime and concurrency
  • OneLake and other storage
  • Spark or other compute
  • Data movement, networking and integration runtime
  • Power BI user licensing and capacity
  • Azure database, Synapse and monitoring charges
  • Purview licensing or pay-as-you-go governance usage

Microsoft says Fabric estimates vary by agreement, purchase date, currency, region and workload. Fabric capacity also does not necessarily remove individual Power BI licensing: users who publish or share dashboards generally need the appropriate Power BI license, while some users consuming shared content may qualify for a free license under the applicable capacity arrangement.

Purview has multiple purchasing routes rather than one universal license. Current options include Microsoft 365 plans, the Purview Suite and pay-as-you-go capabilities: Microsoft Purview pricing.

Benefits and trade-offs

Where the Microsoft approach is attractive

  • The organization already operates Azure, Microsoft 365, Power BI, SQL Server or Dynamics.
  • Shared Microsoft identity, security, compliance and procurement are important.
  • A single strategic vendor is preferred for databases, analytics, BI and governance.
  • Hybrid or multicloud governance must connect to an existing Microsoft estate.

What it does not remove

  • Portfolio complexity: teams still need to distinguish Fabric from Synapse, Power BI licensing from Fabric capacity, Data Factory experiences and Purview governance from Microsoft 365 compliance features.
  • Cost uncertainty: consumption, capacity, storage and data-transfer patterns can make bills difficult to forecast.
  • Vendor dependence: Azure-native APIs, identity, formats and operating practices can increase switching costs.
  • Migration risk: moving from Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, Google Cloud or open-source systems can require data migration, retraining and redesign.
  • Governance work: purchasing Purview or Fabric does not create ownership, accurate metadata or correct access policies by itself.

Who should evaluate it?

It is a strong candidate for an Azure-centric enterprise seeking close integration among operational databases, analytics, Power BI and Microsoft security controls. It deserves more scrutiny when an organization already has a mature multicloud or open lakehouse platform, needs highly specialized warehouse behavior, or wants to minimize dependence on one vendor.

Evaluate the actual workload rather than the historical label. Ask whether the design needs Fabric, Synapse or both; whether current Power BI rights cover publishing and sharing; what Purview features are included in existing Microsoft 365 agreements; how much capacity and data movement are required; and what migration and consulting effort would be involved.

Alternatives in brief

Platform Typical strength Why it may not fit a Microsoft-centered estate
Databricks Spark-heavy engineering, machine learning and open lakehouse patterns Less native integration with Microsoft 365, Power BI and Azure procurement
Snowflake Cloud warehousing, data sharing and multicloud operation Not a full Microsoft application, identity and governance stack
AWS services such as Redshift, Glue, Lake Formation and QuickSight Organizations standardized on AWS Potential duplication for enterprises centered on Azure and Microsoft 365
Google Cloud services such as BigQuery, Dataplex, Dataflow and Looker BigQuery-centered analytics and Google Cloud-native data and AI Migration and retraining costs for an established Azure estate

Verdict

The Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform was an important May 24, 2022 statement of strategy: connect Microsoft’s databases, analytics, BI and governance products so enterprises can work across data silos. It was not one product with one price. For a current implementation, treat the name as historical context and evaluate Fabric, Synapse, Power BI, Purview, Azure databases and integration services according to the workload, licensing and governance required.
