Windows 11 version 26H2 is Microsoft’s 2026 annual feature update for eligible PCs already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. It is delivered as a small enablement package on the shared servicing branch, so much of the underlying code—and many of the features associated with the release—has already arrived through monthly updates. Microsoft’s clearest feature announcement names three experiences whose defaults change on commercial devices: Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions and some File Explorer enhancements.
What Windows 11 26H2 actually is
Microsoft describes 26H2 as an annual feature update rather than a completely separate Windows codebase. Devices on the 24H2 or 25H2 servicing branch already contain many of the components required for the release. The enablement package activates the version and turns on selected capabilities, which is why Microsoft expects a small download, quick installation and one restart for many eligible PCs.

Features have been delivered incrementally through monthly updates. Therefore, “included in 26H2” does not necessarily mean “first created for 26H2.” Microsoft’s August announcement gives the most specific list for commercial devices, while its September availability notice says that selected features previously disabled by default in 25H2 will be enabled by default in 26H2.

The features Microsoft has explicitly identified
Windows settings backup
On commercial devices, Windows settings backup is one of the experiences Microsoft says 26H2 enables by default when it was introduced earlier but not previously enabled by default. The announcement does not provide a new, feature-by-feature inventory of every setting covered, so organizations should verify the exact backup scope and policy behavior in their management documentation before deployment.
App-specific actions from the taskbar
26H2 also enables app-specific actions from the taskbar by default for commercial devices, according to Microsoft. The company’s announcement does not enumerate every supported app or action. Treat the change as a default-behavior update, not as evidence of a wholly new taskbar architecture.
File Explorer enhancements
Some File Explorer enhancements are included among the commercial experiences Microsoft says will be enabled by default. Microsoft has not specified the precise behaviors, edition coverage or configuration requirements in the announcements themselves. Those details should be confirmed against the Windows IT Pro guidance before an administrator relies on a particular Explorer change.
Other features already delivered through servicing
Microsoft says many 26H2 features have been gradually delivered through monthly updates and that selected 25H2 features that shipped disabled by default will be enabled by default in 26H2. The public availability post points to Windows IT Pro for the detailed list, but the specific linked articles do not establish a complete consumer feature matrix here. It would be inaccurate to present the three commercial defaults above as an exhaustive list of every consumer-visible change.

Consumer versus commercial behavior
The strongest named feature details apply to commercial devices. Microsoft’s wording does not establish that every Home or Pro PC receives identical defaults, nor does it define the exact edition coverage for each File Explorer or taskbar item in the announcement. For a personal PC, expect 26H2 to activate capabilities that have already been serviced to the device, but check the Windows Update offer and Microsoft’s current release notes for the behavior available on that edition.
This distinction matters in managed environments: an organization may have policies that override a Windows default, while a feature being enabled by default does not necessarily force users to use it.
Who can install Windows 11 26H2
Microsoft announced general availability on September 29, 2026 for eligible devices running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. Eligibility is not automatic for every PC on those versions. Microsoft uses a controlled rollout and can place a compatibility safeguard hold on devices affected by a known issue.

Check a personal or unmanaged PC
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available if you want feature updates offered as soon as Microsoft makes them available to the device.
- When the PC is eligible and no safeguard hold applies, select the download-and-install option for the Windows 11 2026 Update.
If the offer is missing, that does not by itself indicate a failed installation. It can mean the staged rollout has not reached the device or that Microsoft is withholding it for compatibility reasons.

Deploy in an organization
Commercial and education customers can use their existing Windows management processes. Microsoft names Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center as availability channels, and recommends targeted deployment first. Validate line-of-business apps, device drivers and business-critical workflows with a pilot group before expanding the rollout.
What installation is like
Because 26H2 is an enablement package on the shared 24H2/25H2 branch, Microsoft says qualifying devices generally receive a small download, a quick installation and a single restart. The exact experience still depends on the device’s current servicing state, storage, policies and rollout status; the enablement model is not a guarantee of identical timing on every PC.
Back up important work and schedule the restart around active use, particularly on managed machines. If Windows Update does not offer the package, do not bypass a safeguard hold with an unsupported installation method; wait for Microsoft’s compatibility resolution or follow your organization’s approved servicing process.

These are support durations, not a promise that every Windows 11 edition or every PC can install 26H2. Eligibility remains tied to the device’s starting version, hardware and any active safeguard hold.
What Microsoft has not claimed
- Microsoft has not published a complete consumer feature-by-feature list in the announcements covered here.
- The named commercial defaults are not all necessarily new developments; several were introduced in earlier releases.
- The announcements provide no performance, battery-life or adoption statistics.
- They do not establish identical taskbar or File Explorer behavior across Home, Pro, Enterprise and Education editions.
Should you install it now?
For a personal PC, install 26H2 when Windows Update offers it if you want the current supported release and the defaults Microsoft is activating. For a business or school, pilot it first, confirm app and policy compatibility, then expand deployment through your normal management tools. The update is designed to be low-disruption, but controlled rollout and safeguard holds exist precisely because device configurations differ.
