Microsoft Entra alternatives for organizations that need identity and access management

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

There is no universal Microsoft Entra replacement. Choose a workforce identity and access management (IAM) platform by matching your application protocols, authentication assurance, lifecycle automation, governance, directory integrations, endpoint strategy, operating model and fully loaded cost. Entra may remain the best primary directory for a Microsoft-heavy estate; another service can be federated to Microsoft resources when cross-platform identity, device administration or a different operating model is more important.

Start with a proof of concept (PoC), not a feature-count contest. Test the applications and policies that matter in your environment, then price the exact feature tier and user population.

What you are replacing: SSO is only one part of IAM

Single sign-on (SSO) reduces password prompts, but it does not by itself provide a complete workforce IAM program. Microsoft’s Entra ID product FAQ states that “Single Sign-On (SSO) is one capability within identity and access management (IAM).” The broader scope includes multi-factor authentication (MFA), Conditional Access, lifecycle management, access reviews, privileged identity management and risk-based identity protection. Microsoft distributes these capabilities across Entra plans, so an alternative must be compared with the Entra tier that actually supplies your controls, not with a basic SSO license.

For a fair comparison, document the controls your organization must operate:

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
  • Application access: SAML, OpenID Connect, OAuth, SCIM, RADIUS, LDAP, header-based access and connectors for legacy or on-premises applications.
  • Authentication: MFA, passwordless methods, passkeys, phishing-resistant factors, recovery and break-glass procedures.
  • Policy: device, location, network, sign-in risk, session and application conditions, with clear behavior for exceptions.
  • Lifecycle: joiner, mover and leaver workflows; HR-driven changes; provisioning, deprovisioning and group management.
  • Governance: access reviews, entitlement visibility, approvals, segregation of duties and privileged access.
  • Directory and hybrid integration: existing directories, Microsoft resources, Google Workspace or Google Cloud, on-premises identity stores and multiple forests or tenants.
  • Operations: audit logs, SIEM export, support response, administrator roles, change control, data residency and outage procedures.
  • Endpoint scope: whether identity is sufficient or the same platform must also administer Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile devices.

Write acceptance tests for each required control. A platform that advertises “IAM” but cannot provision a critical application, enforce your required factor or produce usable audit evidence is not a practical replacement.

When keeping Entra is the sensible choice

Retaining Entra is often simpler when Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows devices and existing Entra-integrated applications dominate the estate. Existing identities, groups, Conditional Access policies and Microsoft application integrations can reduce migration work. That convenience does not eliminate the need to verify which Entra license supplies each control or whether a separate governance product is still required.

Microsoft’s published Entra scope covers MFA, Conditional Access, lifecycle management, access reviews, privileged identity management and risk-based identity protection, with capabilities split between plans. If your current design depends on those controls, model the cost of the equivalent Entra plan before comparing a lower-priced SSO-only offer.

Alternatives worth evaluating

Okta Workforce Identity

Okta presents Workforce Identity as a cross-platform suite with SSO, MFA, Universal Directory and a starter allocation of workflows. Its pricing page, accessed October 13, 2026, listed a workforce starting tier at $6 per user per month and stated that workforce suites are billed annually with a $1,500 annual contract minimum. More advanced capabilities and enterprise options may require an inquiry.

Okta is a candidate when you need a vendor-neutral directory and broad application integrations across cloud and on-premises systems. During a PoC, verify the exact connector, provisioning, workflow and policy entitlements in the quoted edition. Do not assume that the starting tier includes every governance, risk or privileged-access control you use in Entra.

Rank #2
Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

JumpCloud

JumpCloud is especially relevant when identity and endpoint administration are both in scope. Its pricing page, accessed October 13, 2026, listed an SSO/MFA plan at $11 per user per month billed annually (with monthly billing shown at $13) and an identity-plus-device-management plan at $13 per user per month billed annually (monthly billing shown at $15).

The bundled label does not establish parity with Entra’s governance or privileged-access features. Map every required control—such as access reviews, privileged elevation, lifecycle triggers and audit retention—to a documented capability and test it. Confirm support for each endpoint operating system, local administrator workflow, patch or configuration requirement and offline-login scenario before treating device management as a replacement for an existing endpoint tool.

Google Cloud Identity

Google Cloud Identity is worth assessing for organizations centered on Google Workspace or Google Cloud. A 2024 UK Competition and Markets Authority paper dated August 8, 2024, describes an architecture in which an enterprise selects Google as its primary directory and provisions users into Entra ID for access to Microsoft resources. This demonstrates that Entra does not have to be the authoritative directory, but it is not a guarantee of current connector behavior.

Validate the present Google-to-Microsoft provisioning path, attribute mapping, group and license handling, deprovisioning timing, MFA and Conditional Access interaction, and recovery ownership. The Google documentation consulted for this comparison did not provide extractable feature or packaging detail, so obtain a current vendor configuration and price for your workforce requirements.

Ping Identity

Ping Identity is a platform to investigate when you need a broader identity architecture or specific deployment choices. A search result for its official pricing page described PingOne customer-identity features and a trial, but the page could not be opened for detailed primary-source verification. Current workforce features, hosting options, connector coverage, support model and price therefore need direct confirmation before Ping is placed on a shortlist.

Rank #3
Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate.

Keycloak and other self-hosted approaches

Keycloak appeared as an open-source possibility, but no usable current detail was available from its official page for this comparison. Self-hosting is not automatically cheaper than a managed service. Include infrastructure, high availability, backups, upgrades, vulnerability response, 24-hour operations, integration development, on-call staffing, documentation and commercial support in the total-cost model.

Compare platforms against the same requirements

Use a weighted scorecard rather than a generic “best alternative” ranking. The following framework keeps unlike products from appearing equivalent:

Evaluation axis Questions to answer in the PoC Evidence to collect
Application and protocol coverage Can every critical SaaS, legacy and on-premises application authenticate and receive groups or entitlements? Successful sign-in, connector configuration, SCIM or equivalent provisioning, and documented exception handling.
MFA and passwordless Which factors, passkeys and phishing-resistant methods are supported? How are recovery and break-glass accounts protected? Enrollment, step-up, lost-factor recovery, offline behavior and administrator audit events.
Conditional or adaptive policy Can policies use device, location, application, session and risk signals without creating unmanageable exceptions? Test cases for allowed, challenged and blocked sign-ins, plus policy-change logs.
Lifecycle automation How are joiners, movers and leavers triggered, approved and propagated to applications? Time to provision and revoke, failed-job alerts, retries, ownership and evidence of completion.
Governance and privileged access Are access reviews, approvals, entitlement visibility and just-in-time privileged controls available in the quoted tier? Review campaign, approval trail, elevation event, expiry and exportable reports.
Directory and hybrid integration Can it connect existing directories and coexist with Microsoft or Google resources? Attribute mappings, synchronization conflict behavior, failover and tenant or forest boundaries.
Endpoint and operating-system fit Is endpoint management required, and does the product cover the organization’s device mix? Enrollment, policy enforcement, local-account controls and support matrix.
Hosting and operations Who runs upgrades, availability, backups, data protection and incident response? SLA, support escalation, status history, data-region terms and administrative separation.
Migration effort What must be recreated, translated or temporarily dual-run? Application inventory, user and group mapping, cutover plan, rollback and communications.
Total annual cost What is the price for the required tier, users, administrators, add-ons, support and implementation? Written quote with term, currency, minimums, taxes, renewal terms and one-time migration costs.

Architecture: replace the directory or federate it?

You can use a different authoritative directory while still reaching Microsoft resources. Federation and provisioning let a non-Microsoft identity service authenticate users or supply accounts and groups to Entra-connected applications. This can support a Google-centered workforce, a cross-platform directory or a staged migration.

Federation adds dependencies. Authentication availability, certificate or metadata rotation, attribute and group mapping, clock accuracy, provisioning queues and emergency access all become part of the operating model. Decide which service owns usernames, MFA enrollment, risk decisions, group membership and deprovisioning. Document what happens if the federation service or provisioning pipeline is unavailable.

For a staged migration, keep a small, controlled set of test users and non-critical applications on the new path first. Measure sign-in latency, provisioning delay, policy outcomes and help-desk incidents before moving production groups. Maintain independent emergency accounts and a tested rollback route; do not make the new federation endpoint the only way administrators can recover access.

Pricing: use like-for-like feature tiers

The following figures were displayed on vendor pages accessed October 13, 2026. They are dated list figures, not normalized quotes. Currency, geography, taxes, contract term, minimums, bundles and add-ons can change.

Platform or tier Published figure Billing and qualification
Microsoft Entra ID P1 $7 per user/month Billed yearly; Microsoft page accessed October 13, 2026.
Microsoft Entra ID P2 $10 per user/month Billed yearly; the higher plan adds risk and privileged-access features; Microsoft page accessed October 13, 2026.
Okta Workforce starting tier $6 per user/month Workforce suites billed annually; page states a $1,500 annual contract minimum. Exact included scope and advanced pricing require confirmation.
JumpCloud SSO/MFA $11 per user/month annually; $13 monthly shown JumpCloud pricing page accessed October 13, 2026.
JumpCloud identity plus device management $13 per user/month annually; $15 monthly shown JumpCloud pricing page accessed October 13, 2026; map governance and privileged controls separately.
Google Cloud Identity Not stated Obtain current workforce packaging and connector pricing for your requirements.
Ping Identity workforce offering Not stated Primary pricing and feature detail could not be verified; request a current quote.
Keycloak or self-hosted deployment Not stated Calculate infrastructure, people, support, upgrades, security operations and integration costs.

For each candidate, calculate annual cost as licenses plus required add-ons, administrator or privileged-user charges, support, implementation, connector development, endpoint tooling, training and migration. Apply the calculation to actual active users, contractors, service accounts and seasonal workers; a per-user headline can be misleading when minimum contracts or separate feature licenses apply.

Run a proof of concept before signing

  1. Freeze requirements. List critical applications, directories, user populations, device platforms, regulatory evidence, recovery objectives and required authentication assurance. Mark each requirement as mandatory or negotiable.
  2. Inventory the current estate. Record protocols, owners, provisioning method, group dependencies, service accounts, certificates, custom claims, hard-coded usernames and applications with no modern connector.
  3. Select representative test cases. Include a Microsoft application, a non-Microsoft SaaS service, an on-premises or legacy application, a high-risk administrative role, a remote unmanaged device and a user who changes department.
  4. Build a contained tenant or deployment. Use test identities and non-production integrations. Configure logging, administrator separation, emergency access and data-retention settings before testing sign-in.
  5. Test authentication paths. Enroll MFA, passwordless methods and recovery; test step-up, denied access, lost factors, break-glass access and phishing-resistant factors. A FIDO2 security key can be an optional authentication accessory, but confirm compatibility with the selected platform and exact key model before purchasing.
  6. Test lifecycle events. Create a user, change the department, remove access and disable the account. Record provisioning and revocation times, failed-job notifications, retries, orphaned accounts and manual steps.
  7. Test policy and governance. Exercise device, location, application and risk conditions; run an access review; elevate a privileged role; verify expiry, approval, logging and report export. Where a feature is unavailable in the quoted tier, record the compensating process and its operating cost.
  8. Test resilience and operations. Simulate an unavailable connector, delayed provisioning, expired federation metadata and an administrator lockout. Confirm monitoring, support escalation, rollback and recovery procedures.
  9. Measure migration effort. Count integrations requiring custom work, user communications, enrollment support, policy translation and dual-running. Estimate help-desk demand and the time administrators need to learn the new console.
  10. Request a final written quote. Tie every mandatory requirement to a license SKU, add-on, contract minimum, implementation service or documented limitation. Recalculate the five-year cost under expected user growth and renewal pricing assumptions.

Common failure modes and how to prevent them

Comparing an SSO starter tier with a full Entra deployment

A low entry price may exclude risk signals, privileged access, access reviews, lifecycle automation or advanced workflows. Build the comparison from controls and evidence, then price the tier that supplies them.

Assuming a connector means complete lifecycle automation

Authentication and provisioning are separate tests. An application may accept SSO while lacking reliable deprovisioning, group updates or entitlement removal. Require a leaver test and an auditable failure path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving legacy applications until the cutover weekend

Older applications may rely on LDAP, RADIUS, headers, static groups or custom claims. Identify these early and decide whether to retain a bridge, modernize the application or exclude it from the first migration wave.

Best Value

  • Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
  • Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.

Creating a federation dependency without emergency access

Keep independently protected emergency accounts, monitor certificate and metadata expiry, and rehearse recovery when the external identity service or provisioning path is unavailable.

Treating device management as automatic governance parity

An identity-plus-device bundle can reduce tool sprawl, but it does not prove equivalent access reviews, privileged controls, risk analytics or evidence retention. Test each control separately.

Underestimating self-hosting

Open-source software can remove subscription fees while adding staffing, infrastructure, upgrade and security responsibilities. Compare the people-hours and risk controls required to operate it with a managed-service quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical shortlist decision

Keep Entra when Microsoft services and existing policies deliver the required controls with acceptable cost and operational effort. Evaluate Okta when a vendor-neutral workforce directory, broad application integration and workflow capabilities are central requirements, subject to its annual minimum and quoted feature scope. Evaluate JumpCloud when one operating model for identity and endpoint administration is valuable and its individual controls pass testing. Evaluate Google Cloud Identity when Google is the productivity and cloud center of gravity, while proving Microsoft-resource provisioning and policy behavior. Investigate Ping Identity or Keycloak only after obtaining current, product-specific evidence for the workforce use case, deployment model, support and cost.

The winning choice is the platform that meets mandatory authentication, lifecycle, governance, integration and recovery tests with the least sustainable operating burden—not the one with the shortest feature list or lowest advertised per-user price.
