What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Microsoft Edge includes a user-set RAM limit that can force the browser to reduce memory use when it reaches your chosen ceiling. In Edge 125 and later, you can apply the limit only while PC gaming or set it to run Always. Edge responds by putting more inactive tabs to sleep or discarding them, which can mean more reloads and slower performance if the cap is too low.
What Edge’s resource controls do
Resource controls are a memory-management setting in Edge 125 and newer. Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > System and performance, enable the resource-controls feature, and choose when the limit applies. The default mode manages RAM during PC gaming; selecting Always keeps the cap active during normal browsing as well.

When Edge reaches the limit, Microsoft says it will try to reduce memory use by sleeping more tabs and discarding some tab data. Microsoft’s published warning is that users “may notice increased page reloads with more tabs being slept and discarded.” The setting is therefore a tuning control, not a guarantee that Edge will stay below an exact number at every moment.
Monitor the limit in Browser essentials
Edge’s Browser essentials sidebar shows the RAM limit and information about memory recovered from sleeping tabs. Use it after changing the cap to see whether tabs are being suspended frequently and whether the browser remains responsive for your workload.

How sleeping tabs save memory
Sleeping tabs pause inactive pages so the operating system can reuse memory and CPU for active work. Microsoft’s support guidance says tabs normally become eligible after two hours without activity, although the timeout can be changed in Edge’s performance settings.
Sleeping a tab is different from closing it. Microsoft says sleeping tabs resume without reloading, so returning to one is usually quicker than reopening a discarded page. A tab may still reload when Edge has to discard it to meet the RAM limit or to handle heavier memory pressure.

Keep important sites awake
If a web app, document, call, dashboard or form cannot tolerate suspension, add it to Edge’s list of sites that should remain active in the performance settings. This uses more memory for those pages but avoids interruptions caused by sleeping or discarding them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat Microsoft’s memory figures mean
| Figure | What it measures | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 83% average memory saved per sleeping tab | Microsoft Edge Team update | Published December 6, 2022; an average vendor-reported result, not a universal guarantee |
| 85% average memory saved and 99% average CPU saved per sleeping tab | Microsoft Edge Team update | Published April 7, 2022; vendor-reported averages under Microsoft’s test conditions |
| 1.38 billion tabs slept | Edge deployment statistic | Microsoft reported this total for September 2022, following Edge 105 |
| Up to 40% and 10 GB less memory | Chrome desktop performance claim | Google’s launch claim from 2022; “up to” potential reduction, not a current Edge-versus-Chrome benchmark |
The percentages should not be read as a ranking between browsers. They come from separate companies, products and test conditions, and neither establishes how much RAM one browser will use on your particular computer.

Edge versus Chrome Memory Saver
Chrome has a related feature under Settings > Performance > Memory Saver. Its current controls are Moderate, Balanced and Maximum. Chrome deactivates tabs you are not using so active tabs can run more smoothly; an inactive tab reloads when you return to it.
| Capability | Microsoft Edge | Google Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| User-facing RAM cap | Yes, with a PC gaming mode or an Always mode in Edge 125+ | Not stated in the supplied official guidance; Memory Saver uses levels instead |
| Inactive-tab automation | Sleeping tabs, with an adjustable inactivity timeout; resource controls can increase sleeping and discarding | Memory Saver deactivates inactive tabs; reopened tabs reload |
| Protected sites | Performance settings let you keep critical sites active | Memory Saver also provides performance controls, but the available behavior depends on Chrome’s current settings |
| Reload trade-off | More reloads are possible when the RAM limit is reached | Inactive tabs reload when reopened |
Both browsers now reclaim resources from inactive tabs. Edge’s distinguishing option is the visible RAM ceiling, which gives heavy multitaskers a more direct way to trade tab persistence for a predictable memory target.

Set up an Edge RAM limit safely
- Open the performance controls: select Settings and more (…) > Settings > System and performance.
- Enable resource controls: turn on the RAM-management feature.
- Choose the scope: leave the default PC-gaming behavior if you only need it during games, or select Always for continuous enforcement.
- Check Browser essentials: watch the RAM limit and sleeping-tab information while using your normal tabs and extensions.
- Adjust gradually: if pages reload often or interactive sites become sluggish, raise the limit or protect those sites from sleeping.
Why Edge tabs reload after you set a limit
The cap is too low
A low limit leaves Edge little room for active pages, extensions and background work. The browser compensates by sleeping or discarding more tabs, increasing the chance that a tab must reload.
The site cannot stay suspended cleanly
Some web applications depend on a live session, continuous audio, real-time updates or unsaved form state. Keep these domains active in performance settings rather than lowering the cap further.
Normal memory pressure is still involved
The RAM limit is not the only factor. The operating system, other applications, extensions and the number of open tabs all compete for memory, so behavior can vary even when the Edge setting is unchanged.
Does Edge really use less RAM than Chrome?
The available official figures do not prove that Edge uses less RAM than Chrome for every workload. Microsoft reports large average savings from sleeping tabs, while Google reports a potential reduction for Chrome’s own Memory Saver; these are not neutral, side-by-side measurements. Compare the browsers on your own mix of tabs, extensions, web apps and games, paying attention to reloads, site compatibility, responsiveness and battery life.
