Chrome lets you use Gmail or another Google service without signing in to the browser, so browser sync is optional. Edge’s documented sync workflow asks you to sign in to an Edge profile and then choose what to synchronize. Both browsers support separate profiles for work and personal data, but neither profile system replaces operating-system access controls.
Edge and Chrome at a glance
The important distinction is between signing in to a provider service and signing in to the browser itself. A Microsoft account used in a web page is not the same decision as enabling Edge profile sync. Likewise, Google says Chrome sign-in is optional even when you sign in to Gmail or another Google service. The table below summarizes the documented behavior.

| Can browser data remain only on one device? | Sync categories can be turned off individually; data not synchronized remains outside those sync categories. | Yes. Bookmarks and passwords can be saved locally when you do not sign in to Chrome. |
| Can profiles separate work and personal information? | Yes. Edge supports switching profiles and creating a new profile. | Yes. Chrome profiles keep bookmarks, history, passwords and settings separate. |
| Can you choose what syncs? | Yes, through per-category controls in Settings > Profiles > Sync. | Yes. Chrome settings include controls for synchronized data, including history and tabs. |
| What happens if synchronized data is cleared? | Microsoft warns that deleting data while signed in and syncing removes it from synced devices. | Google provides account controls for reviewing or deleting Chrome data; the exact effect depends on the data and action selected. |
These are setup and control differences, not a head-to-head security test. The official help pages do not establish a universal winner, a complete version-by-version feature matrix or a quantitative performance advantage.
How account sign-in and browser sync differ
Edge: profile sign-in is the route to sync
Microsoft’s instructions place synchronization inside the Edge profile. On a desktop, open the profile area or go to Settings > Profiles > Sign in, choose the Microsoft account you want to use, and select the sync option. After sign-in, open Settings > Profiles > Sync to inspect the available categories and switch individual types on or off. The guide lists favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill entries, payment information and related browser data as syncable categories. The labels can vary by Edge version, operating system and account type, so check the categories shown in your installation rather than assuming every item is enabled.

On a phone or tablet, use the Edge profile controls to sign in and review synchronization. If more than one account or profile is present, confirm the account name before enabling sync. A work account and a personal Microsoft account can produce different sets of favorites, passwords and tabs even on the same device.
Chrome: Google service sign-in does not automatically mean Chrome sync
Chrome can be signed in from its settings or from a Google web service such as Gmail. Google explicitly says that signing in to Chrome is optional when you sign in to a Google service. In practical terms, a Gmail session can exist in a browser tab while Chrome itself remains unsigned. If Chrome is unsigned, bookmarks and passwords can still be saved on that device, but they are local rather than saved to the Google Account through Chrome sync.
To synchronize Chrome data, open Chrome settings, choose the profile or sign-in control, and sign in with the intended Google Account. Then review the sync settings before accepting the defaults. Google identifies bookmarks, passwords and other Chrome data as account-saved information, and its help documentation identifies history and tabs as settings that can be turned on. The exact switches and wording can differ by platform and current release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTherefore, “I am signed in to Gmail” and “Chrome is synchronizing” are two separate states. Check the Chrome profile indicator and sync page on each device instead of inferring one from the other. Google’s explanations of this separation are in Sign in to Chrome and How sign-in with your Google Account works in Chrome.

What each browser can synchronize
Sync is not a single on/off switch in the practical sense. Both browsers expose multiple data categories, and the selected categories determine what follows you to another signed-in device.
| Data category | Edge documentation | Chrome documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Bookmarks or favorites | Favorites are listed as syncable. | Bookmarks are identified as Chrome data that can be saved to the Google Account; they can also remain local when Chrome is unsigned. |
| Passwords | Passwords are listed as syncable. | Passwords can be saved locally when unsigned or saved to the Google Account after Chrome sign-in. |
| History | History is listed as syncable. | History is a setting users can turn on for sync. |
| Open tabs | Open tabs are listed as syncable. | Tabs are a setting users can turn on for sync. |
| Extensions and settings | Both extensions and settings are listed as syncable. | Google describes “other Chrome data” and provides sync controls; the exact categories shown depend on the current Chrome interface. |
| Autofill and payment information | Autofill entries and payment information are listed among syncable items. | The cited Chrome help pages do not provide a matching item-by-item list for every platform. |
Do not assume that selecting one category enables every related item. For example, a browser may show separate switches for history, tabs, passwords and settings. Review the current page on every platform, particularly after a major browser update or when a device is managed by an organization.
Privacy implications of synchronized data
Chrome history and Google personalization
Google says Chrome history saved to the Google Account may be used to personalize Google products and services when Web & App Activity is enabled. That is an account-level use of saved activity, distinct from the technical act of copying history between browsers. If you want Chrome sync but do not want account activity used for personalization in that way, review Web & App Activity and the account’s activity controls rather than treating the browser sync switch as the only privacy setting.
Chrome’s passphrase option
Chrome offers a passphrase option that encrypts certain synchronized data so Google cannot read that encrypted data. The documentation does not say that a passphrase covers every Chrome data type, so do not present it as universal encryption. A passphrase also creates a recovery responsibility: record it securely, because losing it can affect access to the protected synchronized data. Information sent to Google is encrypted in transit, according to Google’s help documentation.

Edge deletion while sync is active
Microsoft warns that clearing data while signed in and syncing deletes that data from synced devices. Before using a clear-history, remove-data or profile-reset command, decide whether you intend to remove only a local copy or remove the synchronized copy as well. If you want to stop future synchronization, sign out of the Edge profile first; signing out and deleting data are different operations.
Microsoft’s account and sync behavior is described in Sign in to sync Microsoft Edge across devices. Chrome’s account storage and privacy explanations are in How sign-in with your Google Account works in Chrome.
Use profiles to keep work and personal browsing separate
What a profile separates
A browser profile has its own browser information. Chrome specifically identifies bookmarks, history, passwords and settings as profile-separated data. Edge’s profile and sync controls let you switch between accounts or create another profile. Separate profiles prevent a work account’s favorites and autofill suggestions from being mixed into a personal profile and make it easier to select the correct account before syncing.
Creating and switching profiles
In Edge, open the profile menu, choose the option to switch profiles or add a profile, and sign in with the account intended for that context. Then open the profile’s sync settings and select the categories appropriate to that account.

In Chrome, use the profile icon and choose the option to add or manage profiles. Give each profile a recognizable name and sign in only with the account belonging to that context. Google’s profile instructions are in Manage Chrome with multiple profiles.
What profiles do not protect against
Profiles are organizational boundaries, not a substitute for a separate computer login. Google cautions that anyone who can access the device can switch profiles and view profile information. On a shared computer, use separate operating-system accounts when possible. For a temporary session, use a suitable guest or private-browsing mode, understanding that private mode does not make a device account secure or prevent all network and account-level records.
Step-by-step: set up Edge sync safely
- Open the profile controls. Select the Edge profile icon, or open Settings > Profiles > Sign in.
- Choose the account. Select the Microsoft account that should own this browser profile. Check the account identifier before proceeding, especially on a shared or work-managed device.
- Enable synchronization. Accept the sync option shown after sign-in.
- Review categories. Go to Settings > Profiles > Sync. Inspect favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill and payment-information switches, and disable categories you do not want copied.
- Repeat on each device. Sign in to the same Edge profile on the other computer or mobile device and confirm that the same categories are enabled.
- Test with a low-risk item. Add a temporary favorite on one device, wait for synchronization, and check the other device. Remove the test item afterward. Avoid using a password or payment record as the first test.
- Stop without deleting. If you only want to stop future syncing, sign out of the Edge profile. Do not use a clear-data command unless you understand whether it will propagate deletion.
Step-by-step: set up Chrome sync without confusing it with Gmail
- Check the current profile. Select the Chrome profile icon and note whether the browser is signed in and which Google Account is shown.
- Sign in to Chrome if desired. Open Chrome settings and use the profile or sign-in control. You may also encounter a sign-in prompt while using a Google service; signing in there does not force Chrome sync.
- Choose sync settings. After signing in, open the sync controls and review the available switches. Google identifies history and tabs as settings that can be enabled, alongside bookmarks, passwords and other Chrome data.
- Decide how to handle activity. If history is synchronized, review Web & App Activity and personalization choices in the Google Account. These account controls are separate from the browser’s profile menu.
- Consider a passphrase. If the option is available and appropriate, configure a passphrase for the data types it covers. Store the passphrase securely and do not assume it encrypts every synchronized item.
- Verify another device. Sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account on the second device and check that the expected bookmarks, passwords, history or tabs appear. If they do not, inspect the category switches and confirm that both devices use the same account.
- Keep data local when preferred. If you do not want browser sync, leave Chrome unsigned. You can still save bookmarks and passwords on that device, but they will not automatically follow you through Chrome’s account sync.
Troubleshooting common sign-in and sync problems
Gmail is signed in, but Chrome shows no synchronized data
- Open the Chrome profile menu and verify whether Chrome itself is signed in.
- Confirm that the browser is using the intended Google Account; a Gmail tab may be logged in to a different account.
- Open sync settings and turn on the required categories, such as bookmarks, history or tabs.
- Check whether the device is subject to an organization’s policy that restricts browser sign-in or account types.
Edge shows the wrong favorites or passwords
- Open the Edge profile menu and compare the account name with the account used on the other device.
- Go to Settings > Profiles > Sync and confirm that the relevant category is enabled.
- Check whether you are viewing a different Edge profile; each profile can have its own account and data.
- Do not clear the profile as a first troubleshooting step. Microsoft’s warning means a deletion while sync is active can reach other signed-in devices.
A tab or history item is missing
- Make sure the relevant switch is enabled on both devices. Chrome documents history and tabs as independently controllable settings; Edge exposes separate sync categories.
- Confirm that both devices are online and signed in to the same profile account.
- Allow time for synchronization after changing a setting, then restart the browser if the interface still shows stale information.
- Remember that a private-browsing or guest session may not behave like the normal profile.
Someone else can open a supposedly separate profile
- Use a separate operating-system account for that person or for the work context.
- Sign out of accounts on a shared device when finished.
- Use a guest or private session for temporary access, but do not treat it as device-level security.
Work and school accounts: when administrators control the browser
Personal installations do not expose every policy described in enterprise documentation. Chrome administrators can disable, enable or require browser sign-in, restrict which accounts may be used, and require separate profiles for managed identities in supported environments. Those controls can change what a user sees in the profile menu and whether a personal account is permitted. The policy reference is Set Chrome policies for users or browsers.
Recommended Free Tools
The cited consumer Edge guide does not establish an equivalent organization-wide policy matrix. If Edge is installed or configured by an employer or school, follow that organization’s instructions and expect some profile or sync controls to be unavailable. Do not create a personal profile to bypass a managed-account requirement.
Best Value
Signing out, turning off sync and deleting data
Stopping future synchronization
Signing out removes the browser’s active connection to the provider account. In Edge, Microsoft documents signing out as the way to stop syncing. In Chrome, Google provides a dedicated sign-out and sync-off workflow. Use the browser’s sign-out control when your goal is to stop future account synchronization, then decide separately whether local copies should remain.
Chrome’s documented procedure is available at Sign out of Chrome. The page describes desktop behavior; mobile labels and options can differ.
Deleting synchronized data
Deletion is more consequential than sign-out. In Edge, Microsoft explicitly warns that clearing data while syncing removes it from synced devices. In Chrome, review the Google Account controls before deleting account-saved Chrome data, and check which profile and account are active. If you need to preserve a record, export or otherwise back it up using the browser’s current tools before deleting anything.

Which browser approach fits your situation?
Choose Edge’s model when
- Your devices and browser profile are already organized around a Microsoft account.
- You want the category list documented by Microsoft, including favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill entries and payment information.
- You are comfortable reviewing sync switches in Settings > Profiles > Sync and treating deletion while signed in as a cross-device action.
Choose Chrome’s model when
- You want to use Google services without being required to sign in to the browser.
- You prefer to keep bookmarks and passwords local on a device until you deliberately enable Chrome sync.
- You need Chrome profiles for separate work and personal contexts, or your organization manages sign-in and profile policies.
- You want account-level controls for personalization and the option to use a passphrase for certain synchronized data.
Use either browser with extra care when
- The computer is shared and another person can access your operating-system account.
- You routinely switch between work and personal accounts.
- You are about to clear history, reset a profile or remove passwords while synchronization is active.
What the official documentation does—and does not—establish
The support pages establish how account sign-in, profile separation, sync categories and deletion controls work at the time of writing. They do not provide a comprehensive security test, a complete feature comparison for every browser version, or a performance benchmark. Settings and policy availability can vary by version, platform, region and managed-account configuration. Check the labels in your current browser before following a step that changes account storage or deletes data.
